8:1Set the trumpet to thy mouth. [He cometh] as an eagle against the house of Jehovah, because they have transgressed my covenant, and rebelled against my law. 8:2They shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee; [we], Israel. 8:3Israel hath cast off good: the enemy shall pursue him. 8:4They have set up kings, but not by me; they have made princes, and I knew it not; of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off. 8:5Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast [thee] off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will they be incapable of purity? 8:6For from Israel is this also: a workman made it, and it is no God: for the calf of Samaria shall be [broken in] pieces. 8:7For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk; should it sprout, it would yield no meal; if so be it yield, strangers shall swallow it up. 8:8Israel is swallowed up: now are they become among the nations as a vessel wherein is no pleasure. 8:9For they are gone up [to] Assyria [as] a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers. 8:10Although they hire among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall begin to be straitened under the burden of the king of princes. 8:11Because Ephraim hath multiplied altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin. 8:12I have prescribed unto him the manifold things of my law: they are counted [as] a strange thing. 8:13They sacrifice flesh [for] the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; Jehovah hath no delight in them. Now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt. 8:14For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.
9:1Rejoice not, Israel, exultingly, as the peoples; for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved harlot's hire upon every corn-floor. 9:2The floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail her. 9:3They shall not dwell in Jehovah's land; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and in Assyria shall they eat that which is unclean. 9:4They shall pour out no [offerings of] wine to Jehovah, neither shall their sacrifices be pleasing unto him: they shall be unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be defiled: for their bread shall be for themselves; it shall not come into the house of Jehovah. 9:5What will ye do in the day of assembly, and in the day of the feast of Jehovah? 9:6For behold, they are gone away because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up, Moph shall bury them: their pleasant things of silver, nettles shall possess them; thorns shall be in their tents. 9:7The days of visitation are come; the days of recompence are come: Israel shall know [it]: the prophet is a fool, the inspired man is mad, because of the greatness of thine iniquity, and the great enmity. 9:8Is Ephraim a watchman with my God? [nay] the prophet is a fowler's snare on all his ways, enmity in the house of his God. 9:9They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins. 9:10I found Israel as grapes in the wilderness; as first-ripe fruit on the fig-tree, I saw your fathers at the beginning: they went to Baal-Peor, and separated themselves unto that shame, and became abominations like their lover. 9:11As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away as a bird, no birth, no pregnancy, no conception! 9:12For even should they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, [that] not a man [remain]: for woe also to them when I shall have departed from them! 9:13Ephraim, as I saw [him], was a Tyre planted in a beautiful place; but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the slayer. 9:14Give them, Jehovah what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. 9:15All their wickedness is in Gilgal; for there I hated them: because of the wickedness of their doings, I will drive them out of my house, I will love them no more: all their princes are rebellious. 9:16Ephraim is smitten: their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit; yea, though they should bring forth, yet will I slay the beloved [fruit] of their womb. 9:17My God hath rejected them, because they hearkened not unto him; and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
10:1Israel is an unpruned vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself: according to the abundance of his fruit he hath multiplied altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly statues. 10:2Their heart is divided; now shall they be found guilty: he will break down their altars, he will destroy their statues. 10:3For now they will say, We have no king, for we feared not Jehovah; and a king, what can he do for us? 10:4They speak [mere] words, swearing falsely in making a covenant; therefore shall judgment spring up as hemlock in the furrows of the fields. 10:5The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calf of Beth-aven; for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the idolatrous priests thereof shall tremble for it, for its glory, because it is departed from it. 10:6Yea, it shall be carried unto Assyria [as] a present for king Jareb: Ephraim shall be seized with shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel. 10:7As for Samaria her king is cut off as chips upon the face of the waters. 10:8And the high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up upon their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us! and to the hills, Fall on us! 10:9From the days of Gibeah hast thou sinned, O Israel: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them. 10:10At my pleasure will I chastise them; and the peoples shall be assembled against them, when they are bound for their two iniquities. 10:11And Ephraim is a trained heifer, that loveth to tread out [the corn]; I have passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to draw; Judah shall plough, Jacob shall break his clods. 10:12Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap according to mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek Jehovah, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. 10:13Ye have ploughed wickedness, reaped iniquity, eaten the fruit of lies; for thou didst confide in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men. 10:14And a tumult shall arise among thy peoples, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces with the children. 10:15So shall Bethel do unto you because of the wickedness of your wickedness: at day-break shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off.
11:1When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. 11:2As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto the Baals, and burned incense to graven images. 11:3And I it was that taught Ephraim to walk, He took them upon his arms, but they knew not that I healed them. 11:4I drew them with bands of a man, with cords of love; and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I gently caused them to eat. 11:5He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king; for they refused to return [to me]; 11:6and the sword shall turn about in his cities, and shall consume his bars, and devour [them], because of their own counsels. 11:7Yea, my people are bent upon backsliding from me: though they call them to the Most High, none at all exalteth [him]. 11:8How shall I give thee over, Ephraim? [how] shall I deliver thee up, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? [how] shall I set thee as Zeboim? My heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together. 11:9I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God, and not man, the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not come in anger. 11:10They shall walk after Jehovah; he shall roar like a lion; when he shall roar, then the children shall hasten from the west: 11:11they shall hasten as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria; and I will cause them to dwell in their houses, saith Jehovah. 11:12Ephraim encompasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah yet walketh with God, and with the holy things of truth.
12:1Ephraim feedeth on wind, and pursueth after the east wind: all day long he multiplieth lies and desolation; and they make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried into Egypt. 12:2Jehovah hath also a controversy with Judah, and he will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. 12:3He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and in his strength he wrestled with God. 12:4Yea, he wrestled with the Angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spoke with us, 12:5even Jehovah, the God of hosts, Jehovah is his memorial. 12:6And thou, return unto thy God: keep loving-kindness and judgment, and wait on thy God continually. 12:7[He is] a merchant, balances of deceit are in his hand; he loveth to oppress. 12:8And Ephraim saith, Nevertheless I am become rich, I have found me out substance; in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin. 12:9But I [that am] Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt will again make thee to dwell in tents, as in the days of the solemn feast. 12:10And I have spoken to the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and by means of the prophets have I used similitudes. 12:11If Gilead is iniquity, surely they are but vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields. 12:12And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept [sheep]. 12:13And by a prophet Jehovah brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved. 12:14Ephraim provoked [him] to anger most bitterly; and his Lord shall leave his blood upon him, and recompense unto him his reproach.
13:1When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling; he exalted himself in Israel: but he trespassed through Baal, and he died. 13:2And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves. 13:3Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing-floor, and as the smoke out of the lattice. 13:4Yet I [am] Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou hast known no God but me; and there is no saviour besides me. 13:5I knew thee in the wilderness, in the land of drought. 13:6According to their pasture, they became full; they became full, and their heart was exalted: therefore have they forgotten me. 13:7And I will be unto them as a lion; as a leopard I will lurk for them by the way; 13:8I will meet them as a bear bereaved of her [whelps], and will rend the covering of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lioness: the beast of the field shall tear them. 13:9It is thy destruction, O Israel, that [thou art] against me, against thy help. 13:10Where then is thy king, that he may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes? 13:11I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath. 13:12The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is laid by in store. 13:13The pangs of a woman in travail shall come upon him: he is a son not wise; for at the time of the breaking forth of children, he was not there. 13:14I will ransom them from the power of Sheol. I will redeem them from death: where, O death, are thy plagues? where, O Sheol, is thy destruction? Repentance shall be hid from mine eyes. 13:15Though he be fruitful among [his] brethren, an east wind shall come, a wind of Jehovah [that] cometh up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels. 13:16Samaria shall bear her guilt; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword; their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.
14:1O Israel, return unto Jehovah thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. 14:2Take with you words, and turn to Jehovah; say unto him, Forgive all iniquity, and receive [us] graciously; so will we render the calves of our lips. 14:3Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, [Thou art] our God; because in thee the fatherless findeth mercy. 14:4I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely; for mine anger is turned away from him. 14:5I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall blossom as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. 14:6His shoots shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive-tree, and his smell as Lebanon. 14:7They shall return and sit under his shadow; they shall revive [as] corn, and blossom as the vine: the renown thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon. 14:8Ephraim [shall say], What have I to do any more with idols? (I answer [him], and I will observe him.) I am like a green fir-tree. From me is thy fruit found. 14:9Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? intelligent, and he shall know them? For the ways of Jehovah are right, and the just shall walk in them; but the transgressors shall fall therein.
Joel
1:1The word of Jehovah that came to Joel the son of Pethuel. 1:2Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers? 1:3Tell your children of it, and [let] your children [tell] their children, and their children another generation: 1:4that which the palmer-worm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpillar eaten. 1:5Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine: for it is cut off from your mouth. 1:6For a nation is come up upon my land, strong and without number: his teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a lioness. 1:7He hath made my vine a desolation, and barked my fig-tree; he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away: its branches are made white. 1:8Wail like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth. 1:9The oblation and the drink-offering are cut off from the house of Jehovah; the priests, Jehovah's ministers, mourn. 1:10The field is laid waste, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted, the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. 1:11Be ashamed, ye husbandmen; howl, ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley: because the harvest of the field hath perished. 1:12The vine is dried up, and the fig-tree languisheth; the pomegranate-tree, the palm also and the apple-tree; all the trees of the field are withered, yea, joy is withered away from the children of men. 1:13Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests; howl, ministers of the altar; come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the oblation and the drink-offering are withholden from the house of your God. 1:14Hallow a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, gather the elders, [and] all the inhabitants of the land to the house of Jehovah your God, and cry unto Jehovah. 1:15Alas for the day! for the day of Jehovah is at hand, and as destruction from the Almighty shall it come. 1:16Is not the food cut off before our eyes, joy and gladness from the house of our God? 1:17The seeds are rotten under their clods, the granaries are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered. 1:18How do the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are bewildered, for they have no pasture; the flocks of sheep also are in suffering. 1:19To thee, Jehovah, do I cry; for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned up all the trees of the field. 1:20The beasts of the field also cry unto thee; for the water-courses are dried, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
2:1Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain; let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of Jehovah cometh, for it is at hand; 2:2a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and gross darkness, as the dawn spread upon the mountains; a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after them, to the years of generations and generations. 2:3A fire devoureth before them, and behind them a flame burneth; the land is as a garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness: yea, and nothing escapeth them. 2:4The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so they run. 2:5Like the noise of chariots, on the tops of the mountains, they leap; like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. 2:6Before them the peoples are in anguish: all faces turn pale. 2:7They run like mighty men; they climb the wall like men of war; and they march every one on his ways, and break not their ranks. 2:8Neither doth one press upon another; they march every one in his path; and fall amid weapons, but are not wounded. 2:9They spread themselves over the city; they run upon the wall; they climb up into the houses; they enter in by the windows like a thief. 2:10The earth quaketh before them; the heavens tremble; the sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. 2:11And Jehovah uttereth his voice before his army; for his camp is very great; for strong is he that executeth his word: for the day of Jehovah is great and very terrible; and who can bear it? 2:12Yet even now, saith Jehovah, turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning; 2:13and rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto Jehovah your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great loving-kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. 2:14Who knoweth? He might return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him, an oblation and a drink-offering for Jehovah your God? 2:15Blow the trumpet in Zion, hallow a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly; 2:16gather the people, hallow the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts; let the bridegroom go forth from his chamber, and the bride from her closet. 2:17Let the priests, the ministers of Jehovah, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare, O Jehovah, thy people, and give not thine inheritance to reproach, that they should be a byword of the nations. Wherefore should they say among the peoples, Where is their God? 2:18Then Jehovah will be jealous for his land, and will have pity on his people. 2:19And Jehovah will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I send you corn, and new wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith; and I will no more make you a reproach among the nations. 2:20And I will remove far off from you him [that cometh] from the north, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, his face toward the eastern sea, and his rear toward the hinder sea; and his stench shall come up, and his ill odour shall come up, for he hath exalted himself to do great things. 2:21Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for Jehovah doeth great things. 2:22Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring; for the tree beareth its fruit; the fig-tree and the vine yield full increase. 2:23And ye, children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in Jehovah your God; for he giveth you the early rain in due measure, and he causeth to come down for you the rain, the early rain, and the latter rain at the beginning [of the season]. 2:24And the floors shall be full of corn, and the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil. 2:25And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmer-worm, my great army which I sent among you. 2:26And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of Jehovah your God, who hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. 2:27And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, Jehovah, [am] your God, and there is none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. 2:28And it shall come to pass afterwards [that] I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. 2:29Yea, even upon the bondmen and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit. 2:30And I will shew wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 2:31The sun shall be changed to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of Jehovah come. 2:32And it shall be that whosoever shall call upon the name of Jehovah shall be saved: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as Jehovah hath said, and for the residue whom Jehovah shall call.
3:1For behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall turn again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, 3:2I will also gather all the nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and I will enter into judgment with them there on account of my people and mine inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations: and they have parted my land; 3:3and they have cast lots for my people, and have given a boy for a harlot, and sold a girl for wine, and have drunk [it]. 3:4Yea also, what have ye to do with me, O Tyre and Zidon, and all the districts of Philistia? Will ye render me a recompence? But if ye recompense me, swiftly [and] speedily will I bring your recompence upon your own head; 3:5because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my beautiful pleasant things, 3:6and the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the children of the Greeks, that ye might remove them far from their border. 3:7Behold, I will raise them up out of the place whither ye have sold them, and will bring your recompence upon your own head. 3:8And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a nation far off: for Jehovah hath spoken. 3:9Proclaim this among the nations: prepare war, arouse the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near, let them come up. 3:10Beat your ploughshares into swords, and your pruning-knives into spears; let the weak say, I am strong. 3:11Haste ye and come, all ye nations round about, and gather yourselves together. Thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O Jehovah. 3:12Let the nations rouse themselves, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there will I sit to judge all the nations round about. 3:13Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down, for the press is full, the vats overflow; for their wickedness is great. 3:14Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of Jehovah is at hand in the valley of decision. 3:15The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. 3:16And Jehovah will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: and Jehovah will be a shelter for his people, and the refuge of the children of Israel. 3:17And ye shall know that I, Jehovah, [am] your God, dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain; and Jerusalem shall be holy, and no strangers shall pass through her any more. 3:18And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the water-courses of Judah shall flow with waters; and a fountain shall come forth from the house of Jehovah, and shall water the valley of Shittim. 3:19Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, in that they have shed innocent blood in their land. 3:20But Judah shall abide for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation. 3:21And I will purge them from the blood from which I had not purged them: for Jehovah dwelleth in Zion.
Amos
1:1The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. 1:2And he said, Jehovah roareth from Zion, and uttereth his voice from Jerusalem; and the pastures of the shepherds mourn, and the top of Carmel withereth. 1:3Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not revoke [my sentence], because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron. 1:4And I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, and it shall devour the palaces of Ben-Hadad. 1:5And I will break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the valley of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Beth-Eden; and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith Jehovah. 1:6Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Gazah, and for four, I will not revoke its sentence; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver [them] up to Edom. 1:7And I will send a fire on the wall of Gazah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof. 1:8And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn my hand against Ekron; and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord Jehovah. 1:9Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Tyre, and for four, I will not revoke its sentence; because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant. 1:10And I will send a fire on the wall of Tyre, and it shall devour the palaces thereof. 1:11Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke its sentence; because he pursued his brother with the sword, and cast off all pity; and his anger did tear continually, and he kept his wrath for ever. 1:12And I will send a fire upon Teman, and it shall devour the palaces of Bozrah. 1:13Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not revoke its sentence; because they ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border. 1:14And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind. 1:15And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith Jehovah.
2:1Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not revoke its sentence; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime. 2:2And I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerijoth; and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, [and] with the sound of the trumpet. 2:3And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith Jehovah. 2:4Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not revoke its sentence; because they have despised the law of Jehovah, and have not kept his statutes; and their lies have caused them to err, after which their fathers walked. 2:5And I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem. 2:6Thus saith Jehovah: For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke its sentence; because they have sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; 2:7panting after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turning aside the way of the meek; and a man and his father will go in unto the [same] maid, to profane my holy name. 2:8And they lay [themselves] down by every altar upon clothes taken in pledge, and they drink [in] the house of their God the wine of the condemned. 2:9But I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was as the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; but I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath. 2:10And I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite. 2:11And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, ye children of Israel? saith Jehovah. 2:12And ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not. 2:13Behold, I will press upon you, as a cart presseth that is full of sheaves. 2:14And flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver his soul. 2:15Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and the swift of foot shall not escape, and he that rideth the horse shall not deliver his soul; 2:16and he that is stout-hearted among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith Jehovah.
3:1Hear this word that Jehovah hath spoken against you, children of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying, 3:2You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore will I visit upon you all your iniquities. 3:3Shall two walk together except they be agreed? 3:4Will a lion roar in the forest when he hath no prey? Will a young lion cry out of his den if he have taken nothing? 3:5Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth when no gin [is laid] for him? Will the snare spring up from the earth when nothing at all hath been taken? 3:6Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? Shall there be evil in a city, and Jehovah not have done [it]? 3:7But the Lord Jehovah will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. 3:8The lion hath roared, who will not fear? The Lord Jehovah hath spoken, who can but prophesy? 3:9Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great uproar in the midst thereof, and the oppressions that are within her: 3:10and they know not to do right, saith Jehovah, who store up violence and plunder in their palaces. 3:11Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: An adversary! even round about the land! And he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be pillaged. 3:12Thus saith Jehovah: Like as the shepherd rescueth out of the jaw of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be rescued that sit in Samaria in the corner of a couch, and upon the damask of a bed. 3:13Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob, saith the Lord Jehovah, the God of hosts, 3:14that in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him, I will also punish the altars of Bethel; and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground. 3:15And I will smite the winter-house with the summer-house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and many houses shall have an end, saith Jehovah.
4:1Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, that oppress the poor, that crush the needy, that say to their lords, Bring, and let us drink: 4:2the Lord Jehovah hath sworn by his holiness, that behold, days shall come upon you, when he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fish-hooks; 4:3and ye shall go out by the breaches, every one straight before her, and ye shall be cast out to Harmon, saith Jehovah. 4:4Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices in the morning, your tithes every three days, 4:5and burn a thank-offering with leaven, and proclaim, publish, voluntary offerings: for this pleaseth you, children of Israel, saith the Lord Jehovah. 4:6And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places; yet ye have not returned unto me, saith Jehovah. 4:7And I also have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest; and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece [of land] was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered. 4:8And two, three, cities wandered unto one city, to drink water, and were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith Jehovah. 4:9I have smitten you with blasting and mildew; the palmer-worm hath devoured the multitude of your gardens, and your vineyards, and your fig-trees and your olive-trees: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith Jehovah. 4:10I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, taking away captive your horses; and I made the stench of your camps to come up, even into your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith Jehovah. 4:11I have overthrown among you, like God's overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a brand plucked out of the burning; yet have ye not returned unto me, saith Jehovah. 4:12Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel. 4:13For behold, he who formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, who maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, Jehovah, the God of hosts, is his name.
5:1Hear this word, a lamentation, which I take up against you, O house of Israel. 5:2The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more arise: she is cast down upon her land; there is none to raise her up. 5:3For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left, for the house of Israel. 5:4For thus saith Jehovah unto the house of Israel: Seek ye me, and ye shall live. 5:5And seek not Bethel, neither go to Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought. 5:6Seek Jehovah, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour [it], and there be none to quench [it] in Bethel. 5:7Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth, 5:8[seek him] that made the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: Jehovah is his name. 5:9He causeth destruction to break forth suddenly upon the strong, and bringeth destruction upon the fortress. 5:10They hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly. 5:11Forasmuch, therefore, as ye trample upon the poor, and take from him presents of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, and ye shall not drink the wine of them. 5:12For I know how manifold are your transgressions and your sins mighty: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside [the right of] the needy in the gate. 5:13Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in this time; for it is an evil time. 5:14Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live; and so Jehovah, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye say. 5:15Hate evil, and love good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that Jehovah, the God of hosts, will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph. 5:16Therefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the Lord: Wailing shall be in all broadways; and they shall say in all the streets, Alas! alas! And they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing. 5:17And in all vineyards shall be wailing; for I will pass through the midst of thee, saith Jehovah. 5:18Woe unto you that desire the day of Jehovah! To what end is the day of Jehovah for you? It shall be darkness and not light: 5:19as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. 5:20Shall not the day of Jehovah be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it? 5:21I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will not smell [a sweet odour] in your solemn assemblies. 5:22For if ye offer up unto me burnt-offerings and your oblations, I will not accept [them]; neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your fatted beasts. 5:23Take away from me the noise of thy songs, and I will not hear the melody of thy lutes; 5:24but let judgment roll down as waters, and righteousness as an ever-flowing stream. 5:25Did ye bring unto me sacrifices and oblations in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel? 5:26Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of your Moloch, and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye had made to yourselves; 5:27and I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith Jehovah, whose name is the God of hosts.
6:1Woe to them that are at ease in Zion and that are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the renowned of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come. 6:2Pass unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go to Hamath the great; and go down to Gath of the Philistines: are they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border? 6:3Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near; 6:4that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves from the midst of the stall; 6:5that chant to the sound of the lute, [and] invent them instruments of music, like David; 6:6that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments; but are not grieved for the breach of Joseph. 6:7Therefore shall they now go captive, with the first that go captive, and the revelry of them that stretched themselves shall pass away. 6:8The Lord Jehovah hath sworn by himself, saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, I abhor the pride of Jacob, and hate his palaces; and I will deliver up the city with all that is therein. 6:9And it shall come to pass, if there remain ten men in one house, that they shall die. 6:10And a man's uncle, and he that should burn him, shall take him up to bring out the bones from the house, and shall say unto him that is in the inner parts of the house, Is there yet [any] with thee? and he shall say, None. And he will say, Silence! for we may not make mention of Jehovah's name. 6:11For behold, Jehovah commandeth, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts. 6:12Shall horses run upon the rock? will [men] plough [thereon] with oxen? For ye have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood, 6:13ye that rejoice in a thing of nought, that say, Have we not taken to us power by our own strength? 6:14For behold, O house of Israel, saith Jehovah the God of hosts, I will raise up against you a nation; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Hamath unto the torrent of the Arabah.
7:1Thus did the Lord Jehovah shew unto me; and behold, he formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth, and behold, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings. 7:2And it came to pass, when they had wholly eaten the grass of the land, that I said, O Lord Jehovah, forgive, I beseech thee! How shall Jacob arise? for he is small. 7:3Jehovah repented for this: It shall not be, said Jehovah. 7:4Thus did the Lord Jehovah shew unto me; and behold, the Lord Jehovah called to contend by fire; and it devoured the great deep, and ate up the inheritance. 7:5Then said I, O Lord Jehovah, cease, I beseech thee! How shall Jacob arise? for he is small. 7:6Jehovah repented for this: This also shall not be, said the Lord Jehovah. 7:7Thus did he shew unto me; and behold, the Lord stood upon a wall [made] by a plumb-line, with a plumb-line in his hand. 7:8And Jehovah said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumb-line. And the Lord said, Behold, I will set a plumb-line in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more. 7:9And the high places of Isaac shall be desolated, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will arise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. 7:10Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. 7:11For thus Amos saith: Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall certainly go into captivity out of his land. 7:12And Amaziah said unto Amos, [Thou] seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there. 7:13But prophesy not again any more at Bethel; for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is the house of the kingdom. 7:14And Amos answered and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was a herdman, and a gatherer of sycamore fruit. 7:15And Jehovah took me as I followed the flock, and Jehovah said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel. 7:16And now hear thou the word of Jehovah: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and utter not [words] against the house of Isaac. 7:17Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Thy wife shall be a harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided with the line; and thou shalt die in a land that is unclean; and Israel shall certainly go into captivity, out of his land.
8:1Thus did Jehovah shew unto me; and behold, a basket of summer-fruit. 8:2And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer-fruit. And Jehovah said unto me, The end is come upon my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more. 8:3And the songs of the palace shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah. The dead bodies shall be many; in every place they shall be cast forth. Silence! 8:4Hear this, ye that pant after the needy, even to cause to fail the poor of the land, 8:5saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat? making the ephah small and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances for deceit: 8:6that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; and that we may sell the refuse of the wheat. 8:7Jehovah hath sworn by the glory of Jacob, Certainly I will never forget any of their works. 8:8Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? And it shall wholly rise up like the Nile; and it shall surge and sink down, as the river of Egypt. 8:9And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the land in the clear day. 8:10And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning for an only [son], and the end thereof as a bitter day. 8:11Behold, days come, saith the Lord Jehovah, when I will send a famine in the land; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Jehovah. 8:12And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah, and shall not find it. 8:13In that day shall the fair virgins and the young men faint for thirst; 8:14they that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, [As] thy god, O Dan, liveth! and, [As] the way of Beer-sheba liveth! even they shall fall, and never rise up again.
