James
1:1James, bondman of God and of [the] Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which [are] in the dispersion, greeting. 1:2Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into various temptations, 1:3knowing that the proving of your faith works endurance. 1:4But let endurance have [its] perfect work, that ye may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 1:5But if any one of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all freely and reproaches not, and it shall be given to him: 1:6but let him ask in faith, nothing doubting. For he that doubts is like a wave of the sea driven by the wind and tossed about; 1:7for let not that man think that he shall receive anything from the Lord; 1:8[he is] a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. 1:9But let the brother of low degree glory in his elevation, 1:10and the rich in his humiliation, because as [the] grass's flower he will pass away. 1:11For the sun has risen with its burning heat, and has withered the grass, and its flower has fallen, and the comeliness of its look has perished: thus the rich also shall wither in his goings. 1:12Blessed [is the] man who endures temptation; for, having been proved, he shall receive the crown of life, which He has promised to them that love him. 1:13Let no man, being tempted, say, I am tempted of God. For God cannot be tempted by evil things, and himself tempts no one. 1:14But every one is tempted, drawn away, and enticed by his own lust; 1:15then lust, having conceived, gives birth to sin; but sin fully completed brings forth death. 1:16Do not err, my beloved brethren. 1:17Every good gift and every perfect gift comes down from above, from the Father of lights, with whom is no variation nor shadow of turning. 1:18According to his own will begat he us by the word of truth, that we should be a certain first-fruits of *his* creatures. 1:19So that, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 1:20for man's wrath does not work God's righteousness. 1:21Wherefore, laying aside all filthiness and abounding of wickedness, accept with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 1:22But be ye doers of [the] word and not hearers only, beguiling yourselves. 1:23For if any man be a hearer of [the] word and not a doer, *he* is like to a man considering his natural face in a mirror: 1:24for he has considered himself and is gone away, and straightway he has forgotten what he was like. 1:25But *he* that fixes his view on [the] perfect law, that of liberty, and abides in [it], being not a forgetful hearer but a doer of [the] work, *he* shall be blessed in his doing. 1:26If any one think himself to be religious, not bridling his tongue, but deceiving his heart, this man's religion is vain. 1:27Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
2:1My brethren, do not have the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [Lord] of glory, with respect of persons: 2:2for if there come unto your synagogue a man with a gold ring in splendid apparel, and a poor man also come in in vile apparel, 2:3and ye look upon him who wears the splendid apparel, and say, Do thou sit here well, and say to the poor, Do thou stand there, or sit here under my footstool: 2:4have ye not made a difference among yourselves, and become judges having evil thoughts? 2:5Hear, my beloved brethren: Has not God chosen the poor as to the world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to them that love him? 2:6But *ye* have despised the poor [man]. Do not the rich oppress you, and [do not] *they* drag you before [the] tribunals? 2:7And [do not] *they* blaspheme the excellent name which has been called upon you? 2:8If indeed ye keep [the] royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well. 2:9But if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. 2:10For whoever shall keep the whole law and shall offend in one [point], he has come under the guilt of [breaking] all. 2:11For he who said, Thou shalt not commit adultery, said also, Thou shalt not kill. Now if thou dost not commit adultery, but killest, thou art become transgressor of [the] law. 2:12So speak ye, and so act, as those that are to be judged by [the] law of liberty; 2:13for judgment [will be] without mercy to him that has shewn no mercy. Mercy glories over judgment. 2:14What [is] the profit, my brethren, if any one say he have faith, but have not works? can faith save him? 2:15Now if a brother or a sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 2:16and one from amongst you say to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled; but give not to them the needful things for the body, what [is] the profit? 2:17So also faith, if it have not works, is dead by itself. 2:18But some one will say, *Thou* hast faith and *I* have works. Shew me thy faith without works, and *I* from my works will shew thee my faith. 2:19*Thou* believest that God is one. Thou doest well. The demons even believe, and tremble. 2:20But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 2:21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 2:22Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and that by works faith was perfected. 2:23And the scripture was fulfilled which says, Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness, and he was called Friend of God. 2:24Ye see that a man is justified on the principle of works, and not on the principle of faith only. 2:25But was not in like manner also Rahab the harlot justified on the principle of works, when she had received the messengers and put [them] forth by another way? 2:26For as the body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
3:1Be not many teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive greater judgment. 3:2For we all often offend. If any one offend not in word, *he* [is] a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body too. 3:3Behold, we put the bits in the mouths of the horses, that they may obey us, and we turn round their whole bodies. 3:4Behold also the ships, which are so great, and driven by violent winds, are turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pleasure of the helmsman will. 3:5Thus also the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. See how little a fire, how large a wood it kindles! 3:6and the tongue [is] fire, the world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set in our members, the defiler of the whole body, and which sets fire to the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell. 3:7For every species both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and of sea animals, is tamed and has been tamed by the human species; 3:8but the tongue can no one among men tame; [it is] an unsettled evil, full of death-bringing poison. 3:9Therewith bless we the Lord and Father, and therewith curse we men made after [the] likeness of God. 3:10Out of the same mouth goes forth blessing and cursing. It is not right, my brethren, that these things should be thus. 3:11Does the fountain, out of the same opening, pour forth sweet and bitter? 3:12Can, my brethren, a fig produce olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt [water] make sweet water. 3:13Who [is] wise and understanding among you; let him shew out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom; 3:14but if ye have bitter emulation and strife in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 3:15This is not the wisdom which comes down from above, but earthly, natural, devilish. 3:16For where emulation and strife [are], there [is] disorder and every evil thing. 3:17But the wisdom from above first is pure, then peaceful, gentle, yielding, full of mercy and good fruits, unquestioning, unfeigned. 3:18But [the] fruit of righteousness in peace is sown for them that make peace.
4:1Whence [come] wars and whence fightings among you? [Is it] not thence, from your pleasures, which war in your members? 4:2Ye lust and have not: ye kill and are full of envy, and cannot obtain; ye fight and war; ye have not because ye ask not. 4:3Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask evilly, that ye may consume [it] in your pleasures. 4:4Adulteresses, know ye not that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore is minded to be [the] friend of the world is constituted enemy of God. 4:5Think ye that the scripture speaks in vain? Does the Spirit which has taken his abode in us desire enviously? 4:6But he gives more grace. Wherefore he says, God sets himself against [the] proud, but gives grace to [the] lowly. 4:7Subject yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 4:8Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse [your] hands, sinners, and purify [your] hearts, ye double-minded. 4:9Be wretched, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and [your] joy to heaviness. 4:10Humble yourselves before [the] Lord, and he shall exalt you. 4:11Speak not against one another, brethren. He that speaks against [his] brother, or judges his brother, speaks against [the] law and judges [the] law. But if thou judgest [the] law, thou art not doer of [the] law, but judge. 4:12One is the lawgiver and judge, who is able to save and to destroy: but who art *thou* who judgest thy neighbour? 4:13Go to now, ye who say, To-day or to-morrow will we go into such a city and spend a year there, and traffic and make gain, 4:14ye who do not know what will be on the morrow, ([for] what [is] your life? It is even a vapour, appearing for a little while, and then disappearing,) 4:15instead of your saying, If the Lord should [so] will and we should live, we will also do this or that. 4:16But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil. 4:17To him therefore who knows how to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.
5:1Go to now, ye rich, weep, howling over your miseries that [are] coming upon [you]. 5:2Your wealth is become rotten, and your garments moth-eaten. 5:3Your gold and silver is eaten away, and their canker shall be for a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have heaped up treasure in [the] last days. 5:4Behold, the wages of your labourers, who have harvested your fields, wrongfully kept back by you, cry, and the cries of those that have reaped are entered into the ears of [the] Lord of sabaoth. 5:5Ye have lived luxuriously on the earth and indulged yourselves; ye have nourished your hearts [as] in a day of slaughter; 5:6ye have condemned, ye have killed the just; he does not resist you. 5:7Have patience, therefore, brethren, till the coming of the Lord. Behold, the labourer awaits the precious fruit of the earth, having patience for it until it receive [the] early and [the] latter rain. 5:8*Ye* also have patience: stablish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is drawn nigh. 5:9Complain not one against another, brethren, that ye be not judged. Behold, the judge stands before the door. 5:10Take [as] an example, brethren, of suffering and having patience, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of [the] Lord. 5:11Behold, we call them blessed who have endured. Ye have heard of the endurance of Job, and seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is full of tender compassion and pitiful. 5:12But before all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, nor by the earth, nor by any other oath; but let your yea be yea, and your nay, nay, that ye do not fall under judgment. 5:13Does any one among you suffer evil? let him pray. Is any happy? let him sing psalms. 5:14Is any sick among you? let him call to [him] the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of [the] Lord; 5:15and the prayer of faith shall heal the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he be one who has committed sins, it shall be forgiven him. 5:16Confess therefore your offences to one another, and pray for one another, that ye may be healed. [The] fervent supplication of the righteous [man] has much power. 5:17Elias was a man of like passions to us, and he prayed with prayer that it should not rain; and it did not rain upon the earth three years and six months; 5:18and again he prayed, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth caused its fruit to spring forth. 5:19My brethren, if any one among you err from the truth, and one bring him back, 5:20let him know that he that brings back a sinner from [the] error of his way shall save a soul from death and shall cover a multitude of sins.
1 Peter
1:1Peter, apostle of Jesus Christ, to [the] sojourners of [the] dispersion of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 1:2elect according to [the] foreknowledge of God [the] Father, by sanctification of [the] Spirit, unto [the] obedience and sprinkling of [the] blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied. 1:3Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who, according to his great mercy, has begotten us again to a living hope through [the] resurrection of Jesus Christ from among [the] dead, 1:4to an incorruptible and undefiled and unfading inheritance, reserved in [the] heavens for you, 1:5who are kept guarded by [the] power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in [the] last time. 1:6Wherein ye exult, for a little while at present, if needed, put to grief by various trials, 1:7that the proving of your faith, much more precious than of gold which perishes, though it be proved by fire, be found to praise and glory and honour in [the] revelation of Jesus Christ: 1:8whom, having not seen, ye love; on whom [though] not now looking, but believing, ye exult with joy unspeakable and filled with [the] glory, 1:9receiving the end of your faith, [the] salvation of [your] souls. 1:10Concerning which salvation prophets, who have prophesied of the grace towards you, sought out and searched out; 1:11searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ which [was] in them pointed out, testifying before of the sufferings which [belonged] to Christ, and the glories after these. 1:12To whom it was revealed, that not to themselves but to you they ministered those things, which have now been announced to you by those who have declared to you the glad tidings by [the] Holy Spirit, sent from heaven, which angels desire to look into. 1:13Wherefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, [be] sober [and] hope with perfect stedfastness in the grace [which will be] brought to you at [the] revelation of Jesus Christ; 1:14as children of obedience, not conformed to [your] former lusts in your ignorance; 1:15but as he who has called you is holy, be ye also holy in all [your] conversation; 1:16because it is written, Be ye holy, for *I* am holy. 1:17And if ye invoke as Father him who, without regard of persons, judges according to the work of each, pass your time of sojourn in fear, 1:18knowing that ye have been redeemed, not by corruptible [things, as] silver or gold, from your vain conversation handed down from [your] fathers, 1:19but by precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, [the blood] of Christ, 1:20foreknown indeed before [the] foundation of [the] world, but who has been manifested at the end of times for your sakes, 1:21who by him do believe on God, who has raised him from among [the] dead and given him glory, that your faith and hope should be in God. 1:22Having purified your souls by obedience to the truth to unfeigned brotherly love, love one another out of a pure heart fervently; 1:23being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by [the] living and abiding word of God. 1:24Because all flesh [is] as grass, and all its glory as [the] flower of grass. The grass has withered and [its] flower has fallen; 1:25but the word of [the] Lord abides for eternity. But this is the word which in the glad tidings [is] preached to you.
2:1Laying aside therefore all malice and all guile and hypocrisies and envyings and all evil speakings, 2:2as newborn babes desire earnestly the pure mental milk of the word, that by it ye may grow up to salvation, 2:3if indeed ye have tasted that the Lord [is] good. 2:4To whom coming, a living stone, cast away indeed as worthless by men, but with God chosen, precious, 2:5yourselves also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 2:6Because it is contained in the scripture: Behold, I lay in Zion a corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believes on him shall not be put to shame. 2:7To you therefore who believe [is] the preciousness; but to the disobedient, the stone which the builders cast away as worthless, this is become head of [the] corner, 2:8and a stone of stumbling and rock of offence; [who] stumble at the word, being disobedient to which also they have been appointed. 2:9But *ye* [are] a chosen race, a kingly priesthood, a holy nation, a people for a possession, that ye might set forth the excellencies of him who has called you out of darkness to his wonderful light; 2:10who once [were] not a people, but now God's people; who were not enjoying mercy, but now have found mercy. 2:11Beloved, I exhort [you], as strangers and sojourners, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 2:12having your conversation honest among the Gentiles, that [as to that] in which they speak against you as evildoers, they may through [your] good works, [themselves] witnessing [them], glorify God in [the] day of visitation. 2:13Be in subjection [therefore] to every human institution for the Lord's sake; whether to [the] king as supreme, 2:14or to rulers as sent by him, for vengeance on evildoers, and praise to them that do well. 2:15Because so is the will of God, that by well-doing ye put to silence the ignorance of senseless men; 2:16as free, and not as having liberty as a cloak of malice, but as God's bondmen. 2:17Shew honour to all, love the brotherhood, fear God, honour the king. 2:18Servants, [be] subject with all fear to your masters, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the ill-tempered. 2:19For this [is] acceptable, if one, for conscience sake towards God, endure griefs, suffering unjustly. 2:20For what glory [is it], if sinning and being buffeted ye shall bear [it]? but if, doing good and suffering, ye shall bear [it], this is acceptable with God. 2:21For to this have ye been called; for Christ also has suffered for you, leaving you a model that ye should follow in his steps: 2:22who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth; 2:23who, [when] reviled, reviled not again; [when] suffering, threatened not; but gave [himself] over into the hands of him who judges righteously; 2:24who himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, in order that, being dead to sins, we may live to righteousness: by whose stripes ye have been healed. 2:25For ye were going astray as sheep, but have now returned to the shepherd and overseer of your souls.
3:1Likewise, wives, [be] subject to your own husbands, that, even if any are disobedient to the word, they may be gained without [the] word by the conversation of the wives, 3:2having witnessed your pure conversation [carried out] in fear; 3:3whose adorning let it not be that outward one of tressing of hair, and wearing gold, or putting on apparel; 3:4but the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible [ornament] of a meek and quiet spirit, which in the sight of God is of great price. 3:5For thus also the holy women who have hoped in God heretofore adorned themselves, being subject to their own husbands; 3:6as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord; whose children ye have become, doing good, and not fearing with any kind of consternation. 3:7[Ye] husbands likewise, dwell with [them] according to knowledge, as with a weaker, [even] the female, vessel, giving [them] honour, as also fellow-heirs of [the] grace of life, that your prayers be not hindered. 3:8Finally, [be] all of one mind, sympathising, full of brotherly love, tender hearted, humble minded; 3:9not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing; but on the contrary, blessing [others], because ye have been called to this, that ye should inherit blessing. 3:10For he that will love life and see good days, let him cause his tongue to cease from evil and his lips that they speak no guile. 3:11And let him avoid evil, and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it; 3:12because [the] eyes of [the] Lord [are] on [the] righteous, and his ears towards their supplications; but [the] face of [the] Lord [is] against them that do evil. 3:13And who shall injure you if ye have become imitators of that which [is] good? 3:14But if also ye should suffer for righteousness' sake, blessed [are ye]; but be not afraid of their fear, neither be troubled; 3:15but sanctify [the] Lord the Christ in your hearts, and [be] always prepared to [give] an answer [to] every one that asks you to give an account of the hope that [is] in you, but with meekness and fear; 3:16having a good conscience, that [as to that] in which they speak against you as evildoers, they may be ashamed who calumniate your good conversation in Christ. 3:17For [it is] better, if the will of God should will it, to suffer [as] well-doers than [as] evildoers; 3:18for Christ indeed has once suffered for sins, [the] just for [the] unjust, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in flesh, but made alive in [the] Spirit, 3:19in which also going he preached to the spirits [which are] in prison, 3:20heretofore disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in [the] days of Noah while the ark was preparing, into which few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water: 3:21which figure also now saves you, [even] baptism, not a putting away of [the] filth of flesh, but [the] demand as before God of a good conscience, by [the] resurrection of Jesus Christ, 3:22who is at [the] right hand of God, gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being subjected to him.
4:1Christ, then, having suffered for us in [the] flesh, do *ye* also arm yourselves with the same mind; for he that has suffered in [the] flesh has done with sin, 4:2no longer to live the rest of [his] time in [the] flesh to men's lusts, but to God's will. 4:3For the time past [is] sufficient [for us] to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, walking in lasciviousness, lusts, wine-drinking, revels, drinkings, and unhallowed idolatries. 4:4Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] to the same sink of corruption, speaking injuriously [of you]; 4:5who shall render account to him who is ready to judge [the] living and [the] dead. 4:6For to this [end] were the glad tidings preached to [the] dead also, that they might be judged, as regards men, after [the] flesh, but live, as regards God, after [the] Spirit. 4:7But the end of all things is drawn nigh: be sober therefore, and be watchful unto prayers; 4:8but before all things having fervent love among yourselves, because love covers a multitude of sins; 4:9hospitable one to another, without murmuring; 4:10each according as he has received a gift, ministering it to one another, as good stewards of [the] various grace of God. 4:11If any one speak as oracles of God; if any one minister as of strength which God supplies; that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the might for the ages of ages. Amen. 4:12Beloved, take not [as] strange the fire [of persecution] which has taken place amongst you for [your] trial, as if a strange thing was happening to you; 4:13but as ye have share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, that in the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exultation. 4:14If ye are reproached in [the] name of Christ, blessed [are ye]; for the [Spirit] of glory and the Spirit of God rests upon you: [on their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.] 4:15Let none of you suffer indeed as murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or as overseer of other people's matters; 4:16but if as a christian, let him not be ashamed, but glorify God in this name. 4:17For the time of having the judgment begin from the house of God [is come]; but if first from us, what [shall be] the end of those who obey not the glad tidings of God? 4:18And if the righteous is difficultly saved, where shall the impious and [the] sinner appear? 4:19Wherefore also let them who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing to a faithful Creator.
5:1The elders which [are] among you I exhort, who [am their] fellow-elder and witness of the sufferings of the Christ, who also [am] partaker of the glory about to be revealed: 5:2shepherd the flock of God which [is] among you, exercising oversight, not by necessity, but willingly; not for base gain, but readily; 5:3not as lording it over your possessions, but being models for the flock. 5:4And when the chief shepherd is manifested ye shall receive the unfading crown of glory. 5:5Likewise [ye] younger, be subject to [the] elder, and all of you bind on humility towards one another; for God sets himself against [the] proud, but to [the] humble gives grace. 5:6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in [the due] time; 5:7having cast all your care upon him, for he cares about you. 5:8Be vigilant, watch. Your adversary [the] devil as a roaring lion walks about seeking whom he may devour. 5:9Whom resist, stedfast in faith, knowing that the selfsame sufferings are accomplished in your brotherhood which [is] in [the] world. 5:10But the God of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, when ye have suffered for a little while, himself shall make perfect, stablish, strengthen, ground: 5:11to him [be] the glory and the might for the ages of the ages. Amen. 5:12By Silvanus, the faithful brother, as I suppose, I have written to you briefly; exhorting and testifying that this is [the] true grace of God in which ye stand. 5:13She that is elected with [you] in Babylon salutes you, and Marcus my son. 5:14Salute one another with a kiss of love. Peace be with you all who [are] in Christ.

1:1Simon Peter, bondman and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have received like precious faith with us through [the] righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ: 1:2Grace and peace be multiplied to you in [the] knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 1:3As his divine power has given to us all things which relate to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that has called us by glory and virtue, 1:4through which he has given to us the greatest and precious promises, that through these ye may become partakers of [the] divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 1:5But for this very reason also, using therewith all diligence, in your faith have also virtue, in virtue knowledge, 1:6in knowledge temperance, in temperance endurance, in endurance godliness, 1:7in godliness brotherly love, in brotherly love love: 1:8for these things existing and abounding in you make [you] to be neither idle nor unfruitful as regards the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ; 1:9for he with whom these things are not present is blind, short-sighted, and has forgotten the purging of his former sins. 1:10Wherefore the rather, brethren, use diligence to make your calling and election sure, for doing these things ye will never fall; 1:11for thus shall the entrance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ be richly furnished unto you. 1:12Wherefore I will be careful to put you always in mind of these things, although knowing [them] and established in the present truth. 1:13But I account it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting [you] in remembrance, 1:14knowing that the putting off of my tabernacle is speedily [to take place], as also our Lord Jesus Christ has manifested to me; 1:15but I will use diligence, that after my departure ye should have also, at any time, [in your power] to call to mind these things. 1:16For we have not made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, following cleverly imagined fables, but having been eyewitnesses of *his* majesty. 1:17For he received from God [the] Father honour and glory, such a voice being uttered to him by the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom *I* have found my delight; 1:18and this voice *we* heard uttered from heaven, being with him on the holy mountain. 1:19And we have the prophetic word [made] surer, to which ye do well taking heed (as to a lamp shining in an obscure place) until [the] day dawn and [the] morning star arise in your hearts; 1:20knowing this first, that [the scope of] no prophecy of scripture is had from its own particular interpretation, 1:21for prophecy was not ever uttered by [the] will of man, but holy men of God spake under the power of [the] Holy Spirit.
2:1But there were false prophets also among the people, as there shall be also among you false teachers, who shall bring in by the bye destructive heresies, and deny the master that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction; 2:2and many shall follow their dissolute ways, through whom the way of the truth shall be blasphemed. 2:3And through covetousness, with well-turned words, will they make merchandise of you: for whom judgment of old is not idle, and their destruction slumbers not. 2:4For if God spared not [the] angels who had sinned, but having cast them down to the deepest pit of gloom has delivered them to chains of darkness [to be] kept for judgment; 2:5and spared not [the] old world, but preserved Noe, [the] eighth, a preacher of righteousness, having brought in [the] flood upon [the] world of [the] ungodly; 2:6and having reduced [the] cities of Sodom and Gomorrha to ashes, condemned [them] with an overthrow, setting [them as] an example to those that should [afterwards] live an ungodly life; 2:7and saved righteous Lot, distressed with the abandoned conversation of the godless, 2:8(for the righteous man through seeing and hearing, dwelling among them, tormented [his] righteous soul day after day with [their] lawless works,) 2:9[the] Lord knows [how] to deliver the godly out of trial, and to keep [the] unjust to [the] day of judgment [to be] punished; 2:10and specially those who walk after the flesh in [the] lust of uncleanness, and despise lordship. Bold [are they], self-willed; they do not fear speaking injuriously of dignities: 2:11when angels, who are greater in might and power, do not bring against them, before the Lord, an injurious charge. 2:12But these, as natural animals without reason, made to be caught and destroyed, speaking injuriously in things they are ignorant of, shall also perish in their own corruption, 2:13receiving [the] reward of unrighteousness; accounting ephemeral indulgence pleasure; spots and blemishes, rioting in their own deceits, feasting with you; 2:14having eyes full of adultery, and that cease not from sin, alluring unestablished souls; having a heart practised in covetousness, children of curse; 2:15having left [the] straight way they have gone astray, having followed in the path of Balaam [the son] of Bosor, who loved [the] reward of unrighteousness; 2:16but had reproof of his own wickedness [the] dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the folly of the prophet. 2:17These are springs without water, and mists driven by storm, to whom the gloom of darkness is reserved [for ever]. 2:18For [while] speaking great highflown words of vanity, they allure with [the] lusts of [the] flesh, by dissoluteness, those who have just fled those who walk in error, 2:19promising them liberty, while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a man is subdued, by him is he also brought into slavery. 2:20For if after having escaped the pollutions of the world through [the] knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, again entangled, they are subdued by these, their last state is worse than the first. 2:21For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known [it] to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. 2:22But that [word] of the true proverb has happened to them: [The] dog [has] turned back to his own vomit; and, [The] washed sow to [her] rolling in mud.
3:1This, a second letter, beloved, I already write to you, in [both] which I stir up, in the way of putting you in remembrance, your pure mind, 3:2to be mindful of the words spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of the Lord and Saviour by your apostles; 3:3knowing this first, that there shall come at [the] close of the days mockers with mocking, walking according to their own lusts, 3:4and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for from the time the fathers fell asleep all things remain thus from [the] beginning of [the] creation. 3:5For this is hidden from them through their own wilfulness, that heavens were of old, and an earth, having its subsistence out of water and in water, by the word of God, 3:6through which [waters] the then world, deluged with water, perished. 3:7But the present heavens and the earth by his word are laid up in store, kept for fire unto a day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. 3:8But let not this one thing be hidden from you, beloved, that one day with [the] Lord [is] as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 3:9[The] Lord does not delay his promise, as some account of delay, but is longsuffering towards you, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 3:10But the day of [the] Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, and [the] elements, burning with heat, shall be dissolved, and [the] earth and the works in it shall be burnt up. 3:11All these things then being to be dissolved, what ought ye to be in holy conversation and godliness, 3:12waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, by reason of which [the] heavens, being on fire, shall be dissolved, and [the] elements, burning with heat, shall melt? 3:13But, according to his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness. 3:14Wherefore, beloved, as ye wait for these things, be diligent to be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless; 3:15and account the longsuffering of our Lord [to be] salvation; according as our beloved brother Paul also has written to you according to the wisdom given to him, 3:16as also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; among which some things are hard to be understood, which the untaught and ill-established wrest, as also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. 3:17*Ye* therefore, beloved, knowing [these] things before, take care lest, being led away along with the error of the wicked, ye should fall from your own stedfastness: 3:18but grow in grace, and in [the] knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and to [the] day of eternity. Amen.
1 John
1:1That which was from [the] beginning, that which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes; that which we contemplated, and our hands handled, concerning the word of life; 1:2(and the life has been manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and report to you the eternal life, which was with the Father, and has been manifested to us:) 1:3that which we have seen and heard we report to you, that *ye* also may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship [is] indeed with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 1:4And these things write we to you that your joy may be full. 1:5And this is the message which we have heard from him, and declare to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1:6If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not practise the truth. 1:7But if we walk in the light as *he* is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin. 1:8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1:9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us [our] sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1:10If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
2:1My children, these things I write to you in order that ye may not sin; and if any one sin, we have a patron with the Father, Jesus Christ [the] righteous; 2:2and *he* is the propitiation for our sins; but not for ours alone, but also for the whole world. 2:3And hereby we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 2:4He that says, I know him, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 2:5but whoever keeps his word, in him verily the love of God is perfected. Hereby we know that we are in him. 2:6He that says he abides in him ought, even as *he* walked, himself also [so] to walk. 2:7Beloved, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment, which ye have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye heard. 2:8Again, I write a new commandment to you, which thing is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light already shines. 2:9He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in the darkness until now. 2:10He that loves his brother abides in light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in him. 2:11But he that hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and knows not where he goes, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 2:12I write to you, children, because [your] sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. 2:13I write to you, fathers, because ye have known him [that is] from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked [one]. I write to you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 2:14I have written to you, fathers, because ye have known him [that is] from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and ye have overcome the wicked [one]. 2:15Love not the world, nor the things in the world. If any one love the world, the love of the Father is not in him; 2:16because all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 2:17And the world is passing, and its lust, but he that does the will of God abides for eternity. 2:18Little children, it is [the] last hour, and, according as ye have heard that antichrist comes, even now there have come many antichrists, whence we know that it is [the] last hour. 2:19They went out from among us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have surely remained with us, but that they might be made manifest that none are of us. 2:20And *ye* have [the] unction from the holy [one], and ye know all things. 2:21I have not written to you because ye do not know the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. 2:22Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? *He* is the antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. 2:23Whoever denies the Son has not the Father either; he who confesses the Son has the Father also. 2:24As for *you* let that which ye have heard from the beginning abide in you: if what ye have heard from the beginning abides in you, *ye* also shall abide in the Son and in the Father. 2:25And this is the promise which *he* has promised us, life eternal. 2:26These things have I written to you concerning those who lead you astray: 2:27and *yourselves*, the unction which ye have received from him abides in you, and ye have not need that any one should teach you; but as the same unction teaches you as to all things, and is true and is not a lie, and even as it has taught you, ye shall abide in him. 2:28And now, children, abide in him, that if he be manifested we may have boldness, and not be put to shame from before him at his coming. 2:29If ye know that he is righteous, know that every one who practises righteousness is begotten of him.
3:1See what love the Father has given to us, that we should be called [the] children of God. For this reason the world knows us not, because it knew him not. 3:2Beloved, now are we children of God, and what we shall be has not yet been manifested; we know that if it is manifested we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3:3And every one that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as *he* is pure. 3:4Every one that practises sin practises also lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. 3:5And ye know that *he* has been manifested that he might take away our sins; and in him sin is not. 3:6Whoever abides in him, does not sin: whoever sins, has not seen him or known him. 3:7Children, let no man lead you astray; he that practises righteousness is righteous, even as *he* is righteous. 3:8He that practises sin is of the devil; for from [the] beginning the devil sins. To this end the Son of God has been manifested, that he might undo the works of the devil. 3:9Whoever has been begotten of God does not practise sin, because his seed abides in him, and he cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God. 3:10In this are manifest the children of God and the children of the devil. Whoever does not practise righteousness is not of God, and he who does not love his brother. 3:11For this is the message which ye have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another: 3:12not as Cain was of the wicked one, and slew his brother; and on account of what slew he him? because his works were wicked, and those of his brother righteous. 3:13Do not wonder, brethren, if the world hate you. 3:14*We* know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love [his] brother abides in death. 3:15Every one that hates his brother is a murderer, and ye know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 3:16Hereby we have known love, because *he* has laid down his life for us; and *we* ought for the brethren to lay down [our] lives. 3:17But whoso may have the world's substance, and see his brother having need, and shut up his bowels from him, how abides the love of God in him? 3:18Children, let us not love with word, nor with tongue, but in deed and in truth. 3:19And hereby we shall know that we are of the truth, and shall persuade our hearts before him 3:20that if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. 3:21Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness towards God, 3:22and whatsoever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments, and practise the things which are pleasing in his sight. 3:23And this is his commandment, that we believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another, even as he has given us commandment. 3:24And he that keeps his commandments abides in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given to us.
