^11:1Now there was a certain [man] sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister. ^11:2It was [the] Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. ^11:3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. ^11:4But when Jesus heard [it], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it. ^11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. ^11:6When therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was. ^11:7Then after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. ^11:8The disciples say to him, Rabbi, [even but] now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again? ^11:9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world; ^11:10but if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. ^11:11These things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. ^11:12The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he be fallen asleep, he will get well. ^11:13But Jesus spoke of his death, but *they* thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep. ^11:14Jesus therefore then said to them plainly, Lazarus has died. ^11:15And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe. But let us go to him. ^11:16Thomas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let *us* also go, that we may die with him. ^11:17Jesus therefore [on] arriving found him to have been four days already in the tomb. ^11:18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off, ^11:19and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother. ^11:20Martha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house. ^11:21Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died; ^11:22but even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee. ^11:23Jesus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again. ^11:24Martha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day. ^11:25Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live; ^11:26and every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this? ^11:27She says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world. ^11:28And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee. ^11:29She, when she heard [that], rises up quickly and comes to him. ^11:30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him. ^11:31The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there. ^11:32Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. ^11:33Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled, ^11:34and said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see. ^11:35Jesus wept. ^11:36The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him! ^11:37And some of them said, Could not this [man], who has opened the eyes of the blind [man], have caused that this [man] also should not have died? ^11:38Jesus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. ^11:39Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days [there]. ^11:40Jesus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? ^11:41They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me; ^11:42but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me. ^11:43And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. ^11:44And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go. ^11:45Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him; ^11:46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. ^11:47The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs. ^11:48If we let him thus alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. ^11:49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing ^11:50nor consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish. ^11:51But this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; ^11:52and not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad. ^11:53From that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him. ^11:54Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples. ^11:55But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves. ^11:56They sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast? ^11:57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him.

^12:1Jesus therefore, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where was the dead [man] Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from among [the] dead. ^12:2There therefore they made him a supper, and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those at table with him. ^12:3Mary therefore, having taken a pound of ointment of pure nard of great price, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. ^12:4One of his disciples therefore, Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote, who was about to deliver him up, says, ^12:5Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor? ^12:6But he said this, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief and had the bag, and carried what was put into [it]. ^12:7Jesus therefore said, Suffer her to have kept this for the day of my preparation for burial; ^12:8for ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always. ^12:9A great crowd therefore of the Jews knew that he was there; and they came, not because of Jesus only, but also that they might see Lazarus whom he raised from among [the] dead. ^12:10But the chief priests took counsel that they might kill Lazarus also, ^12:11because many of the Jews went away on his account and believed on Jesus. ^12:12On the morrow a great crowd who came to the feast, having heard that Jesus is coming into Jerusalem, ^12:13took branches of palms and went out to meet him, and cried, Hosanna, blessed [is] he that comes in the name of [the] Lord, the King of Israel. ^12:14And Jesus, having found a young ass, sat upon it; as it is written, ^12:15Fear not, daughter of Zion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. ^12:16[Now] his disciples knew not these things at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things to him. ^12:17The crowd therefore that was with him bore witness because he had called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from among [the] dead. ^12:18Therefore also the crowd met him because they had heard that he had done this sign. ^12:19The Pharisees therefore said to one another, Ye see that ye profit nothing: behold, the world is gone after him. ^12:20And there were certain Greeks among those who came up that they might worship in the feast; ^12:21these therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and they asked him saying, Sir, we desire to see Jesus. ^12:22Philip comes and tells Andrew, [and again] Andrew comes and Philip, and they tell Jesus. ^12:23But Jesus answered them saying, The hour is come that the Son of man should be glorified. ^12:24Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except the grain of wheat falling into the ground die, it abides alone; but if it die, it bears much fruit. ^12:25He that loves his life shall lose it, and he that hates his life in this world shall keep it to life eternal. ^12:26If any one serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall be *my* servant. [And] if any one serve me, him shall the Father honour. ^12:27Now is my soul troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But on account of this have I come to this hour. ^12:28Father, glorify thy name. There came therefore a voice out of heaven, I both have glorified and will glorify [it] again. ^12:29The crowd therefore, which stood [there] and heard [it], said that it had thundered. Others said, An angel has spoken to him. ^12:30Jesus answered and said, Not on my account has this voice come, but on yours. ^12:31Now is [the] judgment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out: ^12:32and I, if I be lifted up out of the earth, will draw all to me. ^12:33But this he said signifying by what death he was about to die. ^12:34The crowd answered him, We have heard out of the law that the Christ abides for ever; and how sayest thou that the Son of man must be lifted up? Who *is* this, the Son of man? ^12:35Jesus therefore said to them, Yet a little while is the light amongst you. Walk while ye have the light, that darkness may not overtake you. And he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. ^12:36While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may become sons of light. Jesus said these things, and going away hid himself from them. ^12:37But though he had done so many signs before them, they believed not on him, ^12:38that the word of the prophet Esaias which he said might be fulfilled, Lord, who has believed our report? and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? ^12:39On this account they could not believe, because Esaias said again, ^12:40He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, that they may not see with their eyes, and understand with their heart and be converted, and I should heal them. ^12:41These things said Esaias because he saw his glory and spoke of him. ^12:42Although indeed from among the rulers also many believed on him, but on account of the Pharisees did not confess [him], that they might not be put out of the synagogue: ^12:43for they loved glory from men rather than glory from God. ^12:44But Jesus cried and said, He that believes on me, believes not on me, but on him that sent me; ^12:45and he that beholds me, beholds him that sent me. ^12:46I am come into the world [as] light, that every one that believes on me may not abide in darkness; ^12:47and if any one hear my words and do not keep [them], I judge him not, for I am not come that I might judge the world, but that I might save the world. ^12:48He that rejects me and does not receive my words, has him who judges him: the word which I have spoken, that shall judge him in the last day. ^12:49For I have not spoken from myself, but the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what I should say and what I should speak; ^12:50and I know that his commandment is life eternal. What therefore I speak, as the Father has said to me, so I speak.

^13:1Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come that he should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end. ^13:2And during supper, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote, that he should deliver him up, ^13:3[Jesus,] knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came out from God and was going to God, ^13:4rises from supper and lays aside his garments, and having taken a linen towel he girded himself: ^13:5then he pours water into the washhand basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the linen towel with which he was girded. ^13:6He comes therefore to Simon Peter; and *he* says to him, Lord, dost thou wash *my* feet? ^13:7Jesus answered and said to him, What I do thou dost not know now, but thou shalt know hereafter. ^13:8Peter says to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash thee, thou hast not part with me. ^13:9Simon Peter says to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. ^13:10Jesus says to him, He that is washed all over needs not to wash save his feet, but is wholly clean; and ye are clean, but not all. ^13:11For he knew him that delivered him up: on account of this he said, Ye are not all clean. ^13:12When therefore he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, having sat down again, he said to them, Do ye know what I have done to you? ^13:13Ye call me the Teacher and the Lord, and ye say well, for I am [so]. ^13:14If I therefore, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet; ^13:15for I have given you an example that, as I have done to you, ye should do also. ^13:16Verily, verily, I say to you, The bondman is not greater than his lord, nor the sent greater than he who has sent him. ^13:17If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them. ^13:18I speak not of you all. I know those whom I have chosen; but that the scripture might be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me. ^13:19I tell you [it] now before it happens, that when it happens, ye may believe that I am [he]. ^13:20Verily, verily, I say to you, He who receives whomsoever I shall send receives me; and he that receives me receives him who has sent me. ^13:21Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up. ^13:22The disciples therefore looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke. ^13:23Now there was at table one of his disciples in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus loved. ^13:24Simon Peter makes a sign therefore to him to ask who it might be of whom he spoke. ^13:25But he, leaning on the breast of Jesus, says to him, Lord, who is it? ^13:26Jesus answers, He it is to whom I, after I have dipped the morsel, give it. And having dipped the morsel, he gives it to Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote. ^13:27And, after the morsel, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore says to him, What thou doest, do quickly. ^13:28But none of those at table knew why he said this to him; ^13:29for some supposed, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus was saying to him, Buy the things of which we have need for the feast; or that he should give something to the poor. ^13:30Having therefore received the morsel, he went out immediately; and it was night. ^13:31When therefore he was gone out Jesus says, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. ^13:32If God be glorified in him, God also shall glorify him in himself, and shall glorify him immediately. ^13:33Children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me; and, as I said to the Jews, Where I go ye cannot come, I say to you also now. ^13:34A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. ^13:35By this shall all know that ye are disciples of mine, if ye have love amongst yourselves. ^13:36Simon Peter says to him, Lord, where goest thou? Jesus answered him, Where I go thou canst not follow me now, but thou shalt follow me after. ^13:37Peter says to him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee. ^13:38Jesus answers, Thou wilt lay down thy life for me! Verily, verily, I say to thee, The cock shall not crow till thou hast denied me thrice.

^14:1Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe on God, believe also on me. ^14:2In my Father's house there are many abodes; were it not so, I had told you: for I go to prepare you a place; ^14:3and if I go and shall prepare you a place, I am coming again and shall receive you to myself, that where I am ye also may be. ^14:4And ye know where I go, and ye know the way. ^14:5Thomas says to him, Lord, we know not where thou goest, and how can we know the way? ^14:6Jesus says to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father unless by me. ^14:7If ye had known me, ye would have known also my Father, and henceforth ye know him and have seen him. ^14:8Philip says to him, Lord, shew us the Father and it suffices us. ^14:9Jesus says to him, Am I so long a time with you, and thou hast not known me, Philip? He that has seen me has seen the Father; and how sayest thou, Shew us the Father? ^14:10Believest thou not that I [am] in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words which I speak to you I do not speak from myself; but the Father who abides in me, he does the works. ^14:11Believe *me* that I [am] in the Father and the Father in me; but if not, believe me for the works' sake themselves. ^14:12Verily, verily, I say to you, He that believes on me, the works which I do shall he do also, and he shall do greater than these, because I go to the Father. ^14:13And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, this will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. ^14:14If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. ^14:15If ye love me, keep my commandments. ^14:16And I will beg the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever, ^14:17the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see him nor know him; but ye know him, for he abides with you, and shall be in you. ^14:18I will not leave you orphans, I am coming to you. ^14:19Yet a little and the world sees me no longer; but ye see me; because I live ye also shall live. ^14:20In that day ye shall know that I [am] in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. ^14:21He that has my commandments and keeps them, he it is that loves me; but he that loves me shall be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will manifest myself to him. ^14:22Judas, not the Iscariote, says to him, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself to us and not to the world? ^14:23Jesus answered and said to him, If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our abode with him. ^14:24He that loves me not does not keep my words; and the word which ye hear is not mine, but [that] of the Father who has sent me. ^14:25These things I have said to you, abiding with you; ^14:26but the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, *he* shall teach you all things, and will bring to your remembrance all the things which I have said to you. ^14:27I leave peace with you; I give *my* peace to you: not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it fear. ^14:28Ye have heard that I have said unto you, I go away and I am coming to you. If ye loved me ye would rejoice that I go to the Father, for [my] Father is greater than I. ^14:29And now I have told you before it comes to pass, that when it shall have come to pass ye may believe. ^14:30I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of the world comes, and in me he has nothing; ^14:31but that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father has commanded me, thus I do. Rise up, let us go hence.

^15:1I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. ^15:2[As to] every branch in me not bearing fruit, he takes it away; and [as to] every one bearing fruit, he purges it that it may bring forth more fruit. ^15:3Ye are already clean by reason of the word which I have spoken to you. ^15:4Abide in me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abide in the vine, thus neither [can] ye unless ye abide in me. ^15:5I am the vine, ye [are] the branches. He that abides in me and I in him, *he* bears much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing. ^15:6Unless any one abide in me he is cast out as the branch, and is dried up; and they gather them and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. ^15:7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall come to pass to you. ^15:8In this is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit, and ye shall become disciples of mine. ^15:9As the Father has loved me, I also have loved you: abide in my love. ^15:10If ye shall keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. ^15:11I have spoken these things to you that my joy may be in you, and your joy be full. ^15:12This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you. ^15:13No one has greater love than this, that one should lay down his life for his friends. ^15:14Ye are my friends if ye practise whatever I command you. ^15:15I call you no longer bondmen, for the bondman does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things which I have heard of my Father I have made known to you. ^15:16Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and have set you that ye should go and [that] ye should bear fruit, and [that] your fruit should abide, that whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name he may give you. ^15:17These things I command you, that ye love one another. ^15:18If the world hate you, know that it has hated me before you. ^15:19If ye were of the world, the world would love its own; but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, on account of this the world hates you. ^15:20Remember the word which I said unto you, The bondman is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my word, they will keep also yours. ^15:21But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they have not known him that sent me. ^15:22If I had not come and spoken to them, they had not had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. ^15:23He that hates me hates also my Father. ^15:24If I had not done among them the works which no other one has done, they had not had sin; but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father. ^15:25But that the word written in their law might be fulfilled, They hated me without a cause. ^15:26But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes forth from with the Father, *he* shall bear witness concerning me; ^15:27and ye too bear witness, because ye are with me from [the] beginning.

^16:1These things I have spoken unto you that ye may not be offended. ^16:2They shall put you out of the synagogues; but the hour is coming that every one who kills you will think to render service to God; ^16:3and these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me. ^16:4But I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour shall have come, ye may remember them, that I have said [them] unto you. But I did not say these things unto you from [the] beginning, because I was with you. ^16:5But now I go to him that has sent me, and none of you demands of me, Where goest thou? ^16:6But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. ^16:7But I say the truth to you, It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go I will send him to you. ^16:8And having come, he will bring demonstration to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: ^16:9of sin, because they do not believe on me; ^16:10of righteousness, because I go away to [my] Father, and ye behold me no longer; ^16:11of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. ^16:12I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now. ^16:13But when *he* is come, the Spirit of truth, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but whatsoever he shall hear he shall speak; and he will announce to you what is coming. ^16:14He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall announce [it] to you. ^16:15All things that the Father has are mine; on account of this I have said that he receives of mine and shall announce [it] to you. ^16:16A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, [because I go away to the Father]. ^16:17[Some] of his disciples therefore said to one another, What is this he says to us, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away to the Father? ^16:18They said therefore, What is this which he says [of] the little while? We do not know [of] what he speaks. ^16:19Jesus knew therefore that they desired to demand of him, and said to them, Do ye inquire of this among yourselves that I said, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me? ^16:20Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, ye, but the world shall rejoice; and ye will be grieved, but your grief shall be turned to joy. ^16:21A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief because her hour has come; but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the trouble, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world. ^16:22And ye now therefore have grief; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you. ^16:23And in that day ye shall demand nothing of me: verily, verily, I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you. ^16:24Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. ^16:25These things I have spoken to you in allegories; the hour is coming that I will no longer speak to you in allegories, but will declare to you openly concerning the Father. ^16:26In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you that I will demand of the Father for you, ^16:27for the Father himself has affection for you, because ye have had affection for me, and have believed that I came out from God. ^16:28I came out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I leave the world and go to the Father. ^16:29His disciples say to him, Lo, now thou speakest openly and utterest no allegory. ^16:30Now we know that thou knowest all things, and hast not need that any one should demand of thee. By this we believe that thou art come from God. ^16:31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? ^16:32Behold, [the] hour is coming, and has come, that ye shall be scattered, each to his own, and shall leave me alone; and [yet] I am not alone, for the Father is with me. ^16:33These things have I spoken to you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye have tribulation; but be of good courage: I have overcome the world.

^17:1These things Jesus spoke, and lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son may glorify thee; ^17:2as thou hast given him authority over all flesh, that [as to] all that thou hast given to him, he should give them life eternal. ^17:3And this is the eternal life, that they should know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. ^17:4I have glorified *thee* on the earth, I have completed the work which thou gavest me that I should do it; ^17:5and now glorify *me*, *thou* Father, along with thyself, with the glory which I had along with thee before the world was. ^17:6I have manifested thy name to the men whom thou gavest me out of the world. They were thine, and thou gavest them me, and they have kept thy word. ^17:7Now they have known that all things that thou hast given me are of thee; ^17:8for the words which thou hast given me I have given them, and they have received [them], and have known truly that I came out from thee, and have believed that thou sentest me. ^17:9I demand concerning them; I do not demand concerning the world, but concerning those whom thou hast given me, for they are thine, ^17:10(and all that is mine is thine, and [all] that is thine mine,) and I am glorified in them. ^17:11And I am no longer in the world, and these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name which thou hast given me, that they may be one as we. ^17:12When I was with them I kept them in thy name; those thou hast given me I have guarded, and not one of them has perished, but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. ^17:13And now I come to thee. And these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in them. ^17:14I have given them thy word, and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world. ^17:15I do not demand that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them out of evil. ^17:16They are not of the world, as I am not of the world. ^17:17Sanctify them by the truth: thy word is truth. ^17:18As thou hast sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world; ^17:19and I sanctify myself for them, that they also may be sanctified by truth. ^17:20And I do not demand for these only, but also for those who believe on me through their word; ^17:21that they may be all one, as thou, Father, [art] in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us, that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. ^17:22And the glory which thou hast given me I have given them, that they may be one, as we are one; ^17:23I in them and thou in me, that they may be perfected into one [and] that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and [that] thou hast loved them as thou hast loved me. ^17:24Father, [as to] those whom thou hast given me, I desire that where I am they also may be with me, that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me, for thou lovedst me before [the] foundation of [the] world. ^17:25Righteous Father, and the world has not known thee, but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. ^17:26And I have made known to them thy name, and will make [it] known; that the love with which thou hast loved me may be in them and I in them.

^18:1Jesus, having said these things, went out with his disciples beyond the torrent Cedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, he and his disciples. ^18:2And Judas also, who delivered him up, knew the place, because Jesus was often there, in company with his disciples. ^18:3Judas therefore, having got the band, and officers of the chief priests and Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons. ^18:4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth and said to them, Whom seek ye? ^18:5They answered him, Jesus the Nazaraean. Jesus says to them, I am [he]. And Judas also, who delivered him up, stood with them. ^18:6When therefore he said to them, I am [he], they went away backward and fell to the ground. ^18:7He demanded of them therefore again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus the Nazaraean. ^18:8Jesus answered, I told you that I am [he]: if therefore ye seek me, let these go away; ^18:9that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, [As to] those whom thou hast given me, I have not lost one of them. ^18:10Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and smote the bondman of the high priest and cut off his right ear; and the bondman's name was Malchus. ^18:11Jesus therefore said to Peter, Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it? ^18:12The band therefore, and the chiliarch, and the officers of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him: ^18:13and they led him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. ^18:14But it was Caiaphas who counselled the Jews that it was better that one man should perish for the people. ^18:15Now Simon Peter followed Jesus, and the other disciple. But that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest; ^18:16but Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the porteress and brought in Peter. ^18:17The maid therefore, who was porteress, says to Peter, Art thou also of the disciples of this man? He says, I am not. ^18:18But the bondmen and officers, having made a fire of coals (for it was cold), stood and warmed themselves; and Peter was standing with them and warming himself. ^18:19The high priest therefore demanded of Jesus concerning his disciples and concerning his doctrine. ^18:20Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I taught always in [the] synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and in secret I have spoken nothing. ^18:21Why demandest thou of me? Demand of those who have heard, what I have spoken to them; behold, they know what I have said. ^18:22But as he said these things, one of the officers who stood by gave a blow on the face to Jesus, saying, Answerest thou the high priest thus? ^18:23Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why smitest thou me? ^18:24Annas [then] had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. ^18:25But Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, Art thou also of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not. ^18:26One of the bondmen of the high priest, who was kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, says, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? ^18:27Peter denied therefore again, and immediately [the] cock crew. ^18:28They lead therefore Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium; and it was early morn. And *they* entered not into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but eat the passover. ^18:29Pilate therefore went out to them and said, What accusation do ye bring against this man? ^18:30They answered and said to him, If this [man] were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up to thee. ^18:31Pilate therefore said to them, Take him, ye, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not permitted to us to put any one to death; ^18:32that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke, signifying what death he should die. ^18:33Pilate therefore entered again into the praetorium and called Jesus, and said to him, Thou art the king of the Jews? ^18:34Jesus answered [him], Dost thou say this of thyself, or have others said it to thee concerning me? ^18:35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy nation and the chief priests have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done? ^18:36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my servants had fought that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence. ^18:37Pilate therefore said to him, Thou art then a king? Jesus answered, Thou sayest [it], that I am a king. I have been born for this, and for this I have come into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice. ^18:38Pilate says to him, What is truth? And having said this he went out again to the Jews, and says to them, I find no fault whatever in him. ^18:39But ye have a custom that I release [some] one to you at the passover; will ye therefore that I release unto you the king of the Jews? ^18:40They cried therefore again all, saying, Not this [man], but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

^19:1Then Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged [him]. ^19:2And the soldiers having plaited a crown of thorns put it on his head, and put a purple robe on him, ^19:3and came to him and said, Hail, king of the Jews! and gave him blows on the face. ^19:4And Pilate went out again and says to them, Lo, I bring him out to you, that ye may know that I find in him no fault whatever. ^19:5(Jesus therefore went forth without, wearing the crown of thorn, and the purple robe.) And he says to them, Behold the man! ^19:6When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him they cried out saying, Crucify, crucify [him]. Pilate says to them, Take him ye and crucify [him], for I find no fault in him. ^19:7The Jews answered him, We have a law, and according to [our] law he ought to die, because he made himself Son of God. ^19:8When Pilate therefore heard this word, he was the rather afraid, ^19:9and went into the praetorium again and says to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. ^19:10Pilate therefore says to him, Speakest thou not to *me*? Dost thou not know that I have authority to release thee and have authority to crucify thee? ^19:11Jesus answered, Thou hadst no authority whatever against me if it were not given to thee from above. On this account he that has delivered me up to thee has [the] greater sin. ^19:12From this time Pilate sought to release him; but the Jews cried out saying, If thou releasest this [man], thou art not a friend to Caesar. Every one making himself a king speaks against Caesar. ^19:13Pilate therefore, having heard these words, led Jesus out and sat down upon [the] judgment-seat, at a place called Pavement, but in Hebrew Gabbatha; ^19:14(now it was [the] preparation of the passover; it was about the sixth hour;) and he says to the Jews, Behold your king! ^19:15But they cried out, Take [him] away, take [him] away, crucify him. Pilate says to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. ^19:16Then therefore he delivered him up to them, that he might be crucified; and they took Jesus and led him away. ^19:17And he went out, bearing his cross, to the place called [place] of a skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha; ^19:18where they crucified him, and with him two others, [one] on this side, and [one] on that, and Jesus in the middle. ^19:19And Pilate wrote a title also and put it on the cross. But there was written: Jesus the Nazaraean, the King of the Jews. ^19:20This title therefore many of the Jews read, for the place of the city where Jesus was crucified was near; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, Latin. ^19:21The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, Do not write, The king of the Jews, but that *he* said, I am king of the Jews. ^19:22Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written. ^19:23The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and the body-coat; but the body-coat was seamless, woven through the whole from the top. ^19:24They said therefore to one another, Let us not rend it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled which says, They parted my garments among themselves, and on my vesture they cast lots. The soldiers therefore did these things. ^19:25And by the cross of Jesus stood his mother, and the sister of his mother, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. ^19:26Jesus therefore, seeing his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, says to his mother, Woman, behold thy son. ^19:27Then he says unto the disciple, Behold thy mother. And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. ^19:28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now finished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, says, I thirst. ^19:29There was a vessel therefore there full of vinegar, and having filled a sponge with vinegar, and putting hyssop round it, they put it up to his mouth. ^19:30When therefore Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished; and having bowed his head, he delivered up his spirit. ^19:31The Jews therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for it was [the] preparation, (for the day of that sabbath was a great [day],) demanded of Pilate that their legs might be broken and they taken away. ^19:32The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first and of the other that had been crucified with him; ^19:33but coming to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead they did not break his legs, ^19:34but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water. ^19:35And he who saw it bears witness, and his witness is true, and he knows that he says true that ye also may believe. ^19:36For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, Not a bone of him shall be broken. ^19:37And again another scripture says, They shall look on him whom they pierced. ^19:38And after these things Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly through fear of the Jews, demanded of Pilate that he might take the body of Jesus: and Pilate allowed it. He came therefore and took away the body of Jesus. ^19:39And Nicodemus also, who at first came to Jesus by night, came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds [weight]. ^19:40They took therefore the body of Jesus and bound it up in linen with the spices, as it is the custom with the Jews to prepare for burial. ^19:41But there was in the place where he had been crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. ^19:42There therefore, on account of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus.

^20:1And on the first [day] of the week Mary of Magdala comes in early morn to the tomb, while it was still dark, and sees the stone taken away from the tomb. ^20:2She runs therefore and comes to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, to whom Jesus was attached, and says to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we know not where they have laid him. ^20:3Peter therefore went forth, and the other disciple, and came to the tomb. ^20:4And the two ran together, and the other disciple ran forward faster than Peter, and came first to the tomb, ^20:5and stooping down he sees the linen cloths lying; he did not however go in. ^20:6Simon Peter therefore comes, following him, and entered into the tomb, and sees the linen cloths lying, ^20:7and the handkerchief which was upon his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a distinct place by itself. ^20:8Then entered in therefore the other disciple also who came first to the tomb, and he saw and believed; ^20:9for they had not yet known the scripture, that he must rise from among [the] dead. ^20:10The disciples therefore went away again to their own home. ^20:11But Mary stood at the tomb weeping without. As therefore she wept, she stooped down into the tomb, ^20:12and beholds two angels sitting in white [garments], one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. ^20:13And they say to her, Woman, why dost thou weep? She says to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. ^20:14Having said these things she turned backward and beholds Jesus standing [there], and knew not that it was Jesus. ^20:15Jesus says to her, Woman, why dost thou weep? Whom seekest thou? She, supposing that it was the gardener, says to him, Sir, if thou hast borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. ^20:16Jesus says to her, Mary. She, turning round, says to him in Hebrew, Rabboni, which means Teacher. ^20:17Jesus says to her, Touch me not, for I have not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I ascend to my Father and your Father, and [to] my God and your God. ^20:18Mary of Magdala comes bringing word to the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and [that] he had said these things to her. ^20:19When therefore it was evening on that day, which was the first [day] of the week, and the doors shut where the disciples were, through fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and says to them, Peace [be] to you. ^20:20And having said this, he shewed to them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced therefore, having seen the Lord. ^20:21[Jesus] said therefore again to them, Peace [be] to you: as the Father sent me forth, I also send you. ^20:22And having said this, he breathed into [them], and says to them, Receive [the] Holy Spirit: ^20:23whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted to them; whose soever [sins] ye retain, they are retained. ^20:24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. ^20:25The other disciples therefore said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. ^20:26And eight days after, his disciples were again within, and Thomas with them. Jesus comes, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst and said, Peace [be] to you. ^20:27Then he says to Thomas, Bring thy finger here and see my hands; and bring thy hand and put it into my side; and be not unbelieving, but believing. ^20:28Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God. ^20:29Jesus says to him, Because thou hast seen me thou hast believed: blessed they who have not seen and have believed. ^20:30Many other signs therefore also Jesus did before his disciples, which are not written in this book; ^20:31but these are written that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye might have life in his name.

^21:1After these things Jesus manifested himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. And he manifested [himself] thus. ^21:2There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael who was of Cana of Galilee, and the [sons] of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. ^21:3Simon Peter says to them, I go to fish. They say to him, We also come with thee. They went forth, and went on board, and that night took nothing. ^21:4And early morn already breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; the disciples however did not know that it was Jesus. ^21:5Jesus therefore says to them, Children, have ye anything to eat? They answered him, No. ^21:6And he said to them, Cast the net at the right side of the ship and ye will find. They cast therefore, and they could no longer draw it, from the multitude of fishes. ^21:7That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved says to Peter, It is the Lord. Simon Peter therefore, having heard that it was the Lord, girded his overcoat [on him] (for he was naked), and cast himself into the sea; ^21:8and the other disciples came in the small boat, for they were not far from the land, but somewhere about two hundred cubits, dragging the net of fishes. ^21:9When therefore they went out on the land, they see a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. ^21:10Jesus says to them, Bring of the fishes which ye have now taken. ^21:11Simon Peter went up and drew the net to the land full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty-three; and though there were so many, the net was not rent. ^21:12Jesus says to them, Come [and] dine. But none of the disciples dared inquire of him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. ^21:13Jesus comes and takes the bread and gives it to them, and the fish in like manner. ^21:14This is already the third time that Jesus had been manifested to the disciples, being risen from among [the] dead. ^21:15When therefore they had dined, Jesus says to Simon Peter, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He says to him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I am attached to thee. He says to him, Feed my lambs. ^21:16He says to him again a second time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? He says to him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I am attached to thee. He says to him, Shepherd my sheep. ^21:17He says to him the third time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, art thou attached to me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Art thou attached to me? and said to him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I am attached to thee. Jesus says to him, Feed my sheep. ^21:18Verily, verily, I say to thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst where thou desiredst; but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and bring thee where thou dost not desire. ^21:19But he said this signifying by what death he should glorify God. And having said this, he says to him, Follow me. ^21:20Peter, turning round, sees the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned at supper on his breast, and said, Lord, who is it that delivers thee up? ^21:21Peter, seeing him, says to Jesus, Lord, and what [of] this [man]? ^21:22Jesus says to him, If I will that he abide until I come, what [is that] to thee? Follow thou me. ^21:23This word therefore went out among the brethren, That disciple does not die. And Jesus did not say to him, He does not die; but, If I will that he abide until I come, what [is that] to thee? ^21:24This is the disciple who bears witness concerning these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his witness is true. ^21:25And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which if they were written one by one, I suppose that not even the world itself would contain the books written.

^1:1I composed the first discourse, O Theophilus, concerning all things which Jesus began both to do and to teach, ^1:2until that day in which, having by the Holy Spirit charged the apostles whom he had chosen, he was taken up; ^1:3to whom also he presented himself living, after he had suffered, with many proofs; being seen by them during forty days, and speaking of the things which concern the kingdom of God; ^1:4and, being assembled with [them], commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to await the promise of the Father, which [said he] ye have heard of me. ^1:5For John indeed baptised with water, but *ye* shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit after now not many days. ^1:6They therefore, being come together, asked him saying, Lord, is it at this time that thou restorest the kingdom to Israel? ^1:7And he said to them, It is not yours to know times or seasons, which the Father has placed in his own authority; ^1:8but ye will receive power, the Holy Spirit having come upon you, and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. ^1:9And having said these things he was taken up, they beholding [him], and a cloud received him out of their sight. ^1:10And as they were gazing into heaven, as he was going, behold, also two men stood by them in white clothing, ^1:11who also said, Men of Galilee, why do ye stand looking into heaven? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, shall thus come in the manner in which ye have beheld him going into heaven. ^1:12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called [the mount] of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath-day's journey off. ^1:13And when they were come into [the city], they went up to the upper chamber, where were staying both Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James [son] of Alphaeus, and Simon the zealot, and Jude [the brother] of James. ^1:14These gave themselves all with one accord to continual prayer, with [several] women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. ^1:15And in those days Peter, standing up in the midst of the brethren, said, (the crowd of names [who were] together [was] about a hundred and twenty,) ^1:16Brethren, it was necessary that the scripture should have been fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who became guide to those who took Jesus; ^1:17for he was numbered amongst us, and had received a part in this service. ^1:18(This [man] then indeed got a field with [the] reward of iniquity, and, having fallen down headlong, burst in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. ^1:19And it was known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that that field was called in their own dialect Aceldama; that is, field of blood.) ^1:20For it is written in [the] book of Psalms, Let his homestead become desolate, and let there be no dweller in it; and, Let another take his overseership. ^1:21It is necessary therefore, that of the men who have assembled with us all [the] time in which the Lord Jesus came in and went out among us, ^1:22beginning from the baptism of John until the day in which he was taken up from us, one of these should be a witness with us of his resurrection. ^1:23And they appointed two, Joseph, who was called Barsabas, who had been surnamed Justus, and Matthias. ^1:24And they prayed, and said, Thou Lord, knower of the hearts of all, shew which one of these two thou hast chosen, ^1:25to receive the lot of this service and apostleship, from which Judas transgressing fell to go to his own place. ^1:26And they gave lots on them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

^2:1And when the day of Pentecost was now accomplishing, they were all together in one place. ^2:2And there came suddenly a sound out of heaven as of a violent impetuous blowing, and filled all the house where they were sitting. ^2:3And there appeared to them parted tongues, as of fire, and it sat upon each one of them. ^2:4And they were all filled with [the] Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave to them to speak forth. ^2:5Now there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, pious men, from every nation of those under heaven. ^2:6But the rumour of this having spread, the multitude came together and were confounded, because each one heard them speaking in his own dialect. ^2:7And all were amazed and wondered, saying, Behold, are not all these who are speaking Galilaeans? ^2:8and how do *we* hear [them] each in our own dialect in which we have been born, ^2:9Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and those who inhabit Mesopotamia, and Judaea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, ^2:10both Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya which adjoin Cyrene, and the Romans sojourning [here], both Jews and proselytes, ^2:11Cretans and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our own tongues the great things of God? ^2:12And they were all amazed and in perplexity, saying one to another, What would this mean? ^2:13But others mocking said, They are full of new wine. ^2:14But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and spoke forth to them, Men of Judaea, and all ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give heed to my words: ^2:15for these are not full of wine, as *ye* suppose, for it is the third hour of the day; ^2:16but this is that which was spoken through the prophet Joel, ^2:17And it shall be in the last days, saith God, [that] I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your elders shall dream with dreams; ^2:18yea, even upon my bondmen and upon my bondwomen in those days will I pour out of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. ^2:19And I will give wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: ^2:20the sun shall be changed to darkness and the moon to blood, before the great and gloriously appearing day of [the] Lord come. ^2:21And it shall be that whosoever shall call upon the name of [the] Lord shall be saved. ^2:22Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus the Nazaraean, a man borne witness to by God to you by works of power and wonders and signs, which God wrought by him in your midst, as yourselves know ^2:23him, given up by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye, by [the] hand of lawless [men], have crucified and slain. ^2:24Whom God has raised up, having loosed the pains of death, inasmuch as it was not possible that he should be held by its power; ^2:25for David says as to him, I foresaw the Lord continually before me, because he is at my right hand that I may not be moved. ^2:26Therefore has my heart rejoiced and my tongue exulted; yea more, my flesh also shall dwell in hope, ^2:27for thou wilt not leave my soul in hades, nor wilt thou give thy gracious one to see corruption. ^2:28Thou hast made known to me [the] paths of life, thou wilt fill me with joy with thy countenance. ^2:29Brethren, let it be allowed to speak with freedom to you concerning the patriarch David, that he has both died and been buried, and his monument is amongst us unto this day. ^2:30Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath, of the fruit of his loins to set upon his throne; ^2:31he, seeing [it] before, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that neither has he been left in hades nor his flesh seen corruption. ^2:32This Jesus has God raised up, whereof all *we* are witnesses. ^2:33Having therefore been exalted by the right hand of God, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which *ye* behold and hear. ^2:34For David has not ascended into the heavens, but he says himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit at my right hand ^2:35until I have put thine enemies [to be] the footstool of thy feet. ^2:36Let the whole house of Israel therefore know assuredly that God has made him, this Jesus whom *ye* have crucified, both Lord and Christ. ^2:37And having heard [it] they were pricked in heart, and said to Peter and the other apostles, What shall we do, brethren? ^2:38And Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptised, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for remission of sins, and ye will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ^2:39For to you is the promise and to your children, and to all who [are] afar off, as many as [the] Lord our God may call. ^2:40And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation. ^2:41Those then who had accepted his word were baptised; and there were added in that day about three thousand souls. ^2:42And they persevered in the teaching and fellowship of the apostles, in breaking of bread and prayers. ^2:43And fear was upon every soul, and many wonders and signs took place through the apostles' means. ^2:44And all that believed were together, and had all things common, ^2:45and sold their possessions and substance, and distributed them to all, according as any one might have need. ^2:46And every day, being constantly in the temple with one accord, and breaking bread in [the] house, they received their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, ^2:47praising God, and having favour with all the people; and the Lord added [to the assembly] daily those that were to be saved.

^3:1And Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, [which is] the ninth [hour]; ^3:2and a certain man who was lame from his mother's womb was being carried, whom they placed every day at the gate of the temple called Beautiful, to ask alms of those who were going into the temple; ^3:3who, seeing Peter and John about to enter into the temple, asked to receive alms. ^3:4And Peter, looking stedfastly upon him with John, said, Look on us. ^3:5And he gave heed to them, expecting to receive something from them. ^3:6But Peter said, Silver and gold I have not; but what I have, this give I to thee: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazaraean rise up and walk. ^3:7And having taken hold of him [by] the right hand he raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones were made strong. ^3:8And leaping up he stood and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. ^3:9And all the people saw him walking and praising God; ^3:10and they recognised him, that it was *he* who sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. ^3:11And as he held Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the portico which is called Solomon's, greatly wondering. ^3:12And Peter, seeing it, answered the people, Men of Israel, why are ye astonished at this? or why do ye gaze on us as if we had by our own power or piety made him to walk? ^3:13The God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom *ye* delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when *he* had judged that he should be let go. ^3:14But *ye* denied the holy and righteous one, and asked that a man [that was] a murderer should be granted to you; ^3:15but the originator of life ye slew, whom God raised from among [the] dead, whereof *we* are witnesses. ^3:16And, by faith in his name, his name has made this [man] strong whom ye behold and know; and the faith which is by him has given him this complete soundness in the presence of you all. ^3:17And now, brethren, I know that ye did it in ignorance, as also your rulers; ^3:18but God has thus fulfilled what he had announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ should suffer. ^3:19Repent therefore and be converted, for the blotting out of your sins, so that times of refreshing may come from [the] presence of the Lord, ^3:20and he may send Jesus Christ, who was foreordained for you, ^3:21whom heaven indeed must receive till [the] times of [the] restoring of all things, of which God has spoken by the mouth of his holy prophets since time began. ^3:22Moses indeed said, A prophet shall [the] Lord your God raise up to you out of your brethren like me: him shall ye hear in everything whatsoever he shall say to you. ^3:23And it shall be that whatsoever soul shall not hear that prophet shall be destroyed from among the people. ^3:24And indeed all the prophets from Samuel and those in succession after [him], as many as have spoken, have announced also these days. ^3:25*Ye* are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God appointed to our fathers, saying to Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. ^3:26To you first God, having raised up his servant, has sent him, blessing you in turning each one [of you] from your wickedness.

^4:1And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, ^4:2being distressed on account of their teaching the people and preaching by Jesus the resurrection from among [the] dead; ^4:3and they laid hands on them, and put them in ward till the morrow; for it was already evening. ^4:4But many of those who had heard the word believed; and the number of the men had become [about] five thousand. ^4:5And it came to pass on the morrow that their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together at Jerusalem, ^4:6and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of [the] high priestly family; ^4:7and having placed them in the midst they inquired, In what power or in what name have *ye* done this? ^4:8Then Peter, filled with [the] Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders [of Israel], ^4:9if *we* this day are called upon to answer as to the good deed [done] to the infirm man, how *he* has been healed, ^4:10be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazaraean, whom *ye* have crucified, whom God has raised from among [the] dead, by *him* this [man] stands here before you sound [in body]. ^4:11*He* is the stone which has been set at nought by you the builders, which is become the corner stone. ^4:12And salvation is in none other, for neither is there another name under heaven which is given among men by which we must be saved. ^4:13But seeing the boldness of Peter and John, and perceiving that they were unlettered and uninstructed men, they wondered; and they recognised them that they were with Jesus. ^4:14And beholding the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to reply; ^4:15but having commanded them to go out of the council they conferred with one another, ^4:16saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed an evident sign has come to pass through their means is manifest to all that inhabit Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. ^4:17But that it be not further spread among the people, let us threaten them severely no longer to speak to any man in this name. ^4:18And having called them, they charged [them] not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. ^4:19But Peter and John answering said to them, If it be righteous before God to listen to you rather than to God, judge ye; ^4:20for as for us *we* cannot refrain from speaking of the things which we have seen and heard. ^4:21But they, having further threatened them, let them go, finding no way how they might punish them, on account of the people, because all glorified God for what had taken place; ^4:22for the man on whom this sign of healing had taken place was above forty years old. ^4:23And having been let go, they came to their own [company], and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. ^4:24And they, having heard [it], lifted up [their] voice with one accord to God, and said, Lord, *thou* art the God who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them; ^4:25who hast said by the mouth of thy servant David, Why have [the] nations raged haughtily and [the] peoples meditated vain things? ^4:26The kings of the earth were there, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ. ^4:27For in truth against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou hadst anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with [the] nations, and peoples of Israel, have been gathered together in this city ^4:28to do whatever thy hand and thy counsel had determined before should come to pass. ^4:29And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings, and give to thy bondmen with all boldness to speak thy word, ^4:30in that thou stretchest out thy hand to heal, and that signs and wonders take place through the name of thy holy servant Jesus. ^4:31And when they had prayed, the place in which they were assembled shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the word of God with boldness. ^4:32And the heart and soul of the multitude of those that had believed were one, and not one said that anything of what he possessed was his own, but all things were common to them; ^4:33and with great power did the apostles give witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. ^4:34For neither was there any one in want among them; for as many as were owners of lands or houses, selling them, brought the price of what was sold ^4:35and laid it at the feet of the apostles; and distribution was made to each according as any one might have need. ^4:36And Joseph, who had been surnamed Barnabas by the apostles (which is, being interpreted, Son of consolation), a Levite, Cyprian by birth, ^4:37being possessed of land, having sold [it], brought the money and laid it at the feet of the apostles.

^5:1But a certain man, Ananias by name, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, ^5:2and put aside for himself part of the price, [his] wife also being privy to it; and having brought a certain part, laid it at the feet of the apostles. ^5:3But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled thy heart that thou shouldest lie to the Holy Spirit, and put aside for thyself a part of the price of the estate? ^5:4While it remained did it not remain to *thee*? and sold, was [it not] in thine own power? Why is it that thou hast purposed this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied to men, but to God. ^5:5And Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and expired. And great fear came upon all who heard [it]. ^5:6And the young men, rising up, swathed him up for burial, and having carried him out, buried him. ^5:7And it came to pass about three hours afterwards, that his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in. ^5:8And Peter answered her, Tell me if ye gave the estate for so much? And she said, Yes, for so much. ^5:9And Peter said to her, Why [is it] that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of [the] Lord? Lo, the feet of those that have buried thy husband [are] at the door, and they shall carry thee out. ^5:10And she fell down immediately at his feet and expired. And when the young men came in they found her dead; and, having carried her out, they buried her by her husband. ^5:11And great fear came upon all the assembly, and upon all who heard these things. ^5:12And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders done among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch, ^5:13but of the rest durst no man join them, but the people magnified them; ^5:14and believers were more than ever added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women;) ^5:15so that they brought out the sick into the streets and put [them] on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter, when he came, might overshadow some one of them. ^5:16And the multitude also of the cities round about came together to Jerusalem, bringing sick persons and persons beset by unclean spirits, who were all healed. ^5:17And the high priest rising up, and all they that were with him, which is the sect of the Sadducees, were filled with wrath, ^5:18and laid hands on the apostles and put them in the public prison. ^5:19But an angel of [the] Lord during the night opened the doors of the prison, and leading them out, said, ^5:20Go ye and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. ^5:21And when they heard it, they entered very early into the temple and taught. And when the high priest was come, and they that were with him, they called together the council and all the elderhood of the sons of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. ^5:22And when the officers were come, they did not find them in the prison; and returned and reported ^5:23saying, We found the prison shut with all security, and the keepers standing at the doors; but when we had opened [them], within we found no one. ^5:24And when they heard these words, both the priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests were in perplexity as to them, what this would come to. ^5:25And some one coming reported to them, Lo, the men whom ye put in the prison are in the temple, standing and teaching the people. ^5:26Then the captain, having gone with the officers, brought them, not with violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. ^5:27And they bring them and set them in the council. And the high priest asked them, ^5:28saying, We strictly enjoined you not to teach in this name: and lo, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and purpose to bring upon us the blood of this man. ^5:29But Peter answering, and the apostles, said, God must be obeyed rather than men. ^5:30The God of our fathers has raised up Jesus, whom *ye* have slain, having hanged on a cross. ^5:31Him has God exalted by his right hand as leader and saviour, to give repentance to Israel and remission of sins. ^5:32And *we* are [his] witnesses of these things, and the Holy Spirit also, which God has given to those that obey him. ^5:33But they, when they heard [these things], were cut to the heart, and took counsel to kill them. ^5:34But a certain [man], a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, held in honour of all the people, rose up in the council, and commanded to put the men out for a short while, ^5:35and said to them, Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves as regards these men what ye are going to do; ^5:36for before these days Theudas rose up, alleging himself to be somebody, to whom a number of men, about four hundred, were joined; who was slain, and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed and came to nothing. ^5:37After him rose Judas the Galilean in the days of the census, and drew away [a number of] people after him; and *he* perished, and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad. ^5:38And now I say to you, Withdraw from these men and let them alone, for if this counsel or this work have its origin from men, it will be destroyed; ^5:39but if it be from God, ye will not be able to put them down, lest ye be found also fighters against God. ^5:40And they listened to his advice; and having called the apostles, they beat them, and enjoined them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and dismissed them. ^5:41They therefore went their way from [the] presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to be dishonoured for the name. ^5:42And every day, in the temple and in the houses, they ceased not teaching and announcing the glad tidings that Jesus [was] the Christ.

^6:1But in those days, the disciples multiplying in number, there arose a murmuring of the Hellenists against the Hebrews because their widows were overlooked in the daily ministration. ^6:2And the twelve, having called the multitude of the disciples to [them], said, It is not right that we, leaving the word of God, should serve tables. ^6:3Look out therefore, brethren, from among yourselves seven men, well reported of, full of [the] [Holy] Spirit and wisdom, whom we will establish over this business: ^6:4but *we* will give ourselves up to prayer and the ministry of the word. ^6:5And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and [the] Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch, ^6:6whom they set before the apostles; and, having prayed, they laid their hands on them. ^6:7And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem was very greatly multiplied, and a great crowd of the priests obeyed the faith. ^6:8And Stephen, full of grace and power, wrought wonders and great signs among the people. ^6:9And there arose up certain of those of the synagogue called of freedmen, and of Cyrenians, and of Alexandrians, and of those of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen. ^6:10And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. ^6:11Then they suborned men, saying, We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God. ^6:12And they roused the people, and the elders, and the scribes. And coming upon [him] they seized him and brought [him] to the council. ^6:13And they set false witnesses, saying, This man does not cease speaking words against the holy place and the law; ^6:14for we have heard him saying, This Jesus the Nazaraean shall destroy this place, and change the customs which Moses taught us. ^6:15And all who sat in the council, looking fixedly on him, saw his face as [the] face of an angel.

^7:1And the high priest said, Are these things then so? ^7:2And he said, Brethren and fathers, hearken. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran, ^7:3and said to him, Go out of thy land and out of thy kindred, and come into the land which I will shew thee. ^7:4Then going out of the land of the Chaldeans he dwelt in Charran, and thence, after his father died, he removed him into this land in which *ye* now dwell. ^7:5And he did not give him an inheritance in it, not even what his foot could stand on; and promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he had no child. ^7:6And God spoke thus: His seed shall be a sojourner in a strange land, and they shall enslave them and evil entreat [them] four hundred years; ^7:7and the nation to which they shall be in bondage will *I* judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and serve me in this place. ^7:8And he gave to him [the] covenant of circumcision; and thus he begat Isaac and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs. ^7:9And the patriarchs, envying Joseph, sold him away into Egypt. And God was with him, ^7:10and delivered him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he appointed him chief over Egypt and all his house. ^7:11But a famine came upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great distress, and our fathers found no food. ^7:12But Jacob, having heard of there being corn in Egypt, sent out our fathers first; ^7:13and the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren, and the family of Joseph became known to Pharaoh. ^7:14And Joseph sent and called down to him his father Jacob and all [his] kindred, seventy-five souls. ^7:15And Jacob went down into Egypt and died, he and our fathers, ^7:16and were carried over to Sychem and placed in the sepulchre which Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the [father] of Sychem. ^7:17But as the time of promise drew near which God had promised to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt, ^7:18until another king over Egypt arose who did not know Joseph. ^7:19*He* dealt subtilly with our race, and evil entreated the fathers, casting out their infants that they might not live. ^7:20In which time Moses was born, and was exceedingly lovely, who was nourished three months in the house of his father. ^7:21And when he was cast out, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and brought him up for herself [to be] for a son. ^7:22And Moses was instructed in all [the] wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds. ^7:23And when a period of forty years was fulfilled to him, it came into his heart to look upon his brethren, the sons of Israel; ^7:24and seeing a certain one wronged, he defended [him], and avenged him that was being oppressed, smiting the Egyptian. ^7:25For he thought that his brethren would understand that God by his hand was giving them deliverance. But they understood not. ^7:26And on the morrow he shewed himself to them as they were contending, and compelled them to peace, saying, *Ye* are brethren, why do ye wrong one another? ^7:27But he that was wronging his neighbour thrust him away, saying, Who established thee ruler and judge over us? ^7:28Dost *thou* wish to kill me as thou killedst the Egyptian yesterday? ^7:29And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Madiam, where he begat two sons. ^7:30And when forty years were fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai, in a flame of fire of a bush. ^7:31And Moses seeing it wondered at the vision; and as he went up to consider it, there was a voice of [the] Lord, ^7:32*I* am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not consider [it]. ^7:33And the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place on which thou standest is holy ground. ^7:34I have surely seen the ill treatment of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groan, and have come down to take them out of it; and now, come, I will send thee to Egypt. ^7:35This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee ruler and judge? him did God send [to be] a ruler and deliverer with the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. ^7:36*He* led them out, having wrought wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years. ^7:37This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, A prophet shall God raise up to you out of your brethren like me [him shall ye hear]. ^7:38This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers; who received living oracles to give to us; ^7:39to whom our fathers would not be subject, but thrust [him] from them, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt, ^7:40saying to Aaron, Make us gods who shall go before us; for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has happened to him. ^7:41And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. ^7:42But God turned and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in [the] book of the prophets, Have ye offered me victims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? ^7:43Yea, ye took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of [your] god Remphan, the forms which ye made to do homage to them; and I will transport you beyond Babylon. ^7:44Our fathers had the tent of the testimony in the wilderness, as he that spoke to Moses commanded to make it according to the model which he had seen; ^7:45which also our fathers, receiving from their predecessors, brought in with Joshua when they entered into possession of [the lands of] the nations, whom God drove out from [the] face of our fathers, until the days of David; ^7:46who found favour before God, and asked to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob; ^7:47but Solomon built him a house. ^7:48But the Most High dwells not in [places] made with hands; as says the prophet, ^7:49The heaven [is] my throne and the earth the footstool of my feet: what house will ye build me? saith [the] Lord, or where [is the] place of my rest? ^7:50has not my hand made all these things? ^7:51O stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, *ye* do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers, *ye* also. ^7:52Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain those who announced beforehand concerning the coming of the Just One, of whom *ye* have now become deliverers up and murderers! ^7:53who have received the law as ordained by [the] ministry of angels, and have not kept [it]. ^7:54And hearing these things they were cut to the heart, and gnashed their teeth against him. ^7:55But being full of [the] Holy Spirit, having fixed his eyes on heaven, he saw [the] glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, ^7:56and said, Lo, I behold the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God. ^7:57And they cried out with a loud voice, and held their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord; ^7:58and having cast [him] out of the city, they stoned [him]. And the witnesses laid aside their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul. ^7:59And they stoned Stephen, praying, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. ^7:60And kneeling down, he cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And having said this, he fell asleep.

^8:1And Saul was consenting to his being killed. And on that day there arose a great persecution against the assembly which was in Jerusalem, and all were scattered into the countries of Judaea and Samaria except the apostles. ^8:2And pious men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. ^8:3But Saul ravaged the assembly, entering into the houses one after another, and dragging off both men and women delivered them up to prison. ^8:4Those then that had been scattered went through [the countries] announcing the glad tidings of the word. ^8:5And Philip, going down to a city of Samaria, preached the Christ to them; ^8:6and the crowds with one accord gave heed to the things spoken by Philip, when they heard [him] and saw the signs which he wrought. ^8:7For from many who had unclean spirits they went out, crying with a loud voice; and many that were paralysed and lame were healed. ^8:8And there was great joy in that city. ^8:9But a certain man, by name Simon, had been before in the city, using magic arts, and astonishing the nation of Samaria, saying that himself was some great one. ^8:10To whom they had all given heed, from small to great, saying, This is the power of God which is called great. ^8:11And they gave heed to him, because that for a long time he had astonished them by his magic arts. ^8:12But when they believed Philip announcing the glad tidings concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised, both men and women. ^8:13And Simon also himself believed; and, having been baptised, continued constantly with Philip; and, beholding the signs and great works of power which took place, was astonished. ^8:14And the apostles who were in Jerusalem, having heard that Samaria had received the word of God, sent to them Peter and John; ^8:15who, having come down, prayed for them that they might receive [the] Holy Spirit; ^8:16for he was not yet fallen upon any of them, only they were baptised to the name of the Lord Jesus. ^8:17Then they laid their hands upon them, and they received [the] Holy Spirit. ^8:18But Simon, having seen that by the laying on of the hands of the apostles the [Holy] Spirit was given, offered them money, ^8:19saying, Give to me also this power, in order that on whomsoever I may lay hands he may receive [the] Holy Spirit. ^8:20And Peter said to him, Thy money go with thee to destruction, because thou hast thought that the gift of God can be obtained by money. ^8:21Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter, for thy heart is not upright before God. ^8:22Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and supplicate the Lord, if indeed the thought of thy heart may be forgiven thee; ^8:23for I see thee to be in the gall of bitterness, and bond of unrighteousness. ^8:24And Simon answering said, Supplicate *ye* for me to the Lord, so that nothing may come upon me of the things of which ye have spoken. ^8:25They therefore, having testified and spoken the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and announced the glad tidings to many villages of the Samaritans. ^8:26But [the] angel of [the] Lord spoke to Philip, saying, Rise up and go southward on the way which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza: the same is desert. ^8:27And he rose up and went. And lo, an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a man in power under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to worship at Jerusalem, ^8:28was returning and sitting in his chariot: and he was reading the prophet Esaias. ^8:29And the Spirit said to Philip, Approach and join this chariot. ^8:30And Philip, running up, heard him reading the prophet Esaias, and said, Dost thou then know what thou art reading of? ^8:31And he said, How should I then be able unless some one guide me? And he begged Philip to come up and sit with him. ^8:32And the passage of the scripture which he read was this: He was led as a sheep to slaughter, and as a lamb is dumb in presence of him that shears him, thus he opens not his mouth. ^8:33In his humiliation his judgment has been taken away, and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. ^8:34And the eunuch answering Philip said, I pray thee, concerning whom does the prophet say this? of himself or of some other? ^8:35And Philip, opening his mouth and beginning from that scripture, announced the glad tidings of Jesus to him. ^8:36And as they went along the way, they came upon a certain water, and the eunuch says, Behold water; what hinders my being baptised? ^8:37Not available ^8:38And he commanded the chariot to stop. And they went down both to the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptised him. ^8:39But when they came up out of the water [the] Spirit of [the] Lord caught away Philip, and the eunuch saw him no longer, for he went on his way rejoicing. ^8:40And Philip was found at Azotus, and passing through he announced the glad tidings to all the cities till he came to Caesarea.
