8:1In those days, there being again a great crowd, and they having nothing that they could eat, having called his disciples to [him], he says to them, 8:2I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me already three days and they have not anything they can eat, 8:3and if I should dismiss them to their home fasting, they will faint on the way; for some of them are come from far. 8:4And his disciples answered him, Whence shall one be able to satisfy these with bread here in a desert place? 8:5And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. 8:6And he commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. And having taken the seven loaves, he gave thanks, and broke [them] and gave [them] to his disciples, that they might set [them] before [them]; and they set [them] before the crowd. 8:7And they had a few small fishes, and having blessed them, he desired these also to be set before [them]. 8:8And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up of fragments that remained seven baskets. 8:9And they [that had eaten] were about four thousand; and he sent them away. 8:10And immediately going on board ship with his disciples, he came into the parts of Dalmanutha. 8:11And the Pharisees went out and began to dispute against him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, tempting him. 8:12And groaning in his spirit, he says, Why does this generation seek a sign? Verily I say unto you, A sign shall in no wise be given to this generation. 8:13And he left them, and going again on board ship, went away to the other side. 8:14And they forgot to take bread, and save one loaf, they had not [any] with them in the ship. 8:15And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and [of] the leaven of Herod. 8:16And they reasoned with one another, [saying], It is because we have no bread. 8:17And Jesus knowing [it], says to them, Why reason ye because ye have no bread? Do ye not yet perceive nor understand? Have ye your heart [yet] hardened? 8:18Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? 8:19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many hand-baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say to him, Twelve. 8:20And when the seven for the four thousand, the filling of how many baskets of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. 8:21And he said to them, How do ye not yet understand? 8:22And he comes to Bethsaida; and they bring him a blind man, and beseech him that he might touch him. 8:23And taking hold of the hand of the blind man he led him forth out of the village, and having spit upon his eyes, he laid his hands upon him, and asked him if he beheld anything. 8:24And having looked up, he said, I behold men, for I see [them], as trees, walking. 8:25Then he laid his hands again upon his eyes, and he saw distinctly, and was restored and saw all things clearly. 8:26And he sent him to his house, saying, Neither enter into the village, nor tell [it] to any one in the village. 8:27And Jesus went forth and his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea-Philippi. And by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Who do men say that I am? 8:28And they answered him, saying, John the baptist; and others, Elias; but others, One of the prophets. 8:29And he asked them, But *ye*, who do ye say that I am? And Peter answering says to him, *Thou* art the Christ. 8:30And he charged them straitly, in order that they should tell no man about him. 8:31And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and of the chief priests and of the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise [again]. 8:32And he spoke the thing openly. And Peter, taking him to [him], began to rebuke him. 8:33But he, turning round and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, saying, Get away behind me, Satan, for thy mind is not on the things that are of God, but on the things that are of men. 8:34And having called the crowd with his disciples, he said to them, Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. 8:35For whosoever shall desire to save his life shall lose it, but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's shall save it. 8:36For what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul? 8:37for what should a man give in exchange for his soul? 8:38For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him shall the Son of man also be ashamed when he shall come in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
9:1And he said to them, Verily I say unto you, There are some of those standing here that shall not taste death until they shall have seen the kingdom of God come in power. 9:2And after six days Jesus takes with [him] Peter and James and John, and takes them up on a high mountain by themselves apart. And he was transfigured before them: 9:3and his garments became shining, exceeding white [as snow], such as fuller on earth could not whiten [them]. 9:4And there appeared to them Elias with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 9:5And Peter answering says to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we should be here; and let us make three tabernacles, for thee one, and for Moses one, and for Elias one. 9:6For he knew not what he should say, for they were filled with fear. 9:7And there came a cloud overshadowing them, and there came a voice out of the cloud, *This* is my beloved Son: hear him. 9:8And suddenly having looked around, they no longer saw any one, but Jesus alone with themselves. 9:9And as they descended from the mountain, he charged them that they should relate to no one what they had seen, unless when the Son of man should be risen from among [the] dead. 9:10And they kept that saying, questioning among themselves, what rising from among [the] dead was. 9:11And they asked him saying, Why do the scribes say that Elias must first have come? 9:12And he answering said to them, Elias indeed, having first come, restores all things; and how is it written of the Son of man that he must suffer much, and be set at nought: 9:13but I say unto you that Elias also is come, and they have done to him whatever they would, as it is written of him. 9:14And when he came to the disciples he saw a great crowd around them, and scribes disputing against them. 9:15And immediately all the crowd seeing him were amazed, and running to [him], saluted him. 9:16And he asked them, What do ye question with them about? 9:17And one out of the crowd answered him, Teacher, I brought to thee my son, who has a dumb spirit; 9:18and wheresoever it seizes him it tears him, and he foams and gnashes his teeth, and he is withering away. And I spoke to thy disciples, that they might cast him out, and they could not. 9:19But he answering them says, O unbelieving generation! how long shall I be with you? how long shall I bear with you? bring him to me. 9:20And they brought him to him. And seeing him the spirit immediately tore him; and falling upon the earth he rolled foaming. 9:21And he asked his father, How long a time is it that it has been like this with him? And he said, From childhood; 9:22and often it has cast him both into fire and into waters that it might destroy him: but if thou couldst [do] anything, be moved with pity on us, and help us. 9:23And Jesus said to him, The 'if thou couldst' is [if thou couldst] believe: all things are possible to him that believes. 9:24And immediately the father of the young child crying out said [with tears], I believe, help mine unbelief. 9:25But Jesus, seeing that [the] crowd was running up together, rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, *I* command thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. 9:26And having cried out and torn [him] much, he came out; and he became as if dead, so that the most said, He is dead. 9:27But Jesus, having taken hold of him by the hand, lifted him up, and he arose. 9:28And when he was entered into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Wherefore could not *we* cast him out? 9:29And he said to them, This kind can go out by nothing but by prayer and fasting. 9:30And going forth from thence they went through Galilee; and he would not that any one knew it; 9:31for he taught his disciples and said to them, The Son of man is delivered into men's hands, and they shall kill him; and having been killed, after three days he shall rise again. 9:32But they understood not the saying, and feared to ask him. 9:33And he came to Capernaum, and being in the house, he asked them, Of what were ye reasoning by the way? 9:34And they remained silent, for by the way they had been reasoning with one another who [was] greatest. 9:35And sitting down he called the twelve; and he says to them, If any one would be first, he shall be last of all, and minister of all. 9:36And taking a little child he set it in their midst, and having taken it in his arms he said to them, 9:37Whosoever shall receive one of such little children in my name, receives me; and whosoever shall receive me, does not receive me, but him who sent me. 9:38And John answered him saying, Teacher, we saw some one casting out demons in thy name, who does not follow us, and we forbad him, because he does not follow us. 9:39But Jesus said, Forbid him not; for there is no one who shall do a miracle in my name, and be able soon [after] to speak ill of me; 9:40for he who is not against us is for us. 9:41For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in [my] name, because ye are Christ's, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. 9:42And whosoever shall be a snare to one of the little ones who believe [in me], it were better for him if a millstone were hung about his neck, and he cast into the sea. 9:43And if thy hand serve as a snare to thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having thy two hands to go away into hell, into the fire unquenchable; 9:44[where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched]. 9:45And if thy foot serve as a snare to thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life lame, than having thy two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire unquenchable; 9:46[where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched]. 9:47And if thine eye serve as a snare to thee, cast it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire, 9:48where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched. 9:49For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. 9:50Salt [is] good, but if the salt is become saltless, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.
10:1And rising up thence he comes into the coasts of Judaea, and the other side of the Jordan. And again crowds come together to him, and, as he was accustomed, again he taught them. 10:2And Pharisees coming to [him] asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away [his] wife? (tempting him). 10:3But he answering said to them, What did Moses command you? 10:4And they said, Moses allowed to write a bill of divorce, and to put away. 10:5And Jesus answering said to them, In view of your hard-heartedness he wrote this commandment for you; 10:6but from [the] beginning of [the] creation God made them male and female. 10:7For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be united to his wife, 10:8and the two shall be one flesh: so that they are no longer two but one flesh. 10:9What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate. 10:10And again in the house the disciples asked him concerning this. 10:11And he says to them, Whosoever shall put away his wife and shall marry another, commits adultery against her. 10:12And if a woman put away her husband and shall marry another, she commits adultery. 10:13And they brought little children to him that he might touch them. But the disciples rebuked those that brought [them]. 10:14But Jesus seeing [it], was indignant, and said to them, Suffer the little children to come to me; forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God. 10:15Verily I say to you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall in no wise enter into it. 10:16And having taken them in his arms, having laid his hands on them, he blessed them. 10:17And as he went forth into the way, a person ran up to [him], and kneeling to him asked him, Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 10:18But Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? no one is good but one, [that is] God. 10:19Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honour thy father and mother. 10:20And he answering said to him, Teacher, all these things have I kept from my youth. 10:21And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, One thing lackest thou: go, sell whatever thou hast and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, [taking up the cross]. 10:22But he, sad at the word, went away grieved, for he had large possessions. 10:23And Jesus looking around says to his disciples, How difficultly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 10:24And the disciples were amazed at his words. And Jesus again answering says to them, Children, how difficult it is that those who trust in riches should enter into the kingdom of God! 10:25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 10:26And they were exceedingly astonished, saying to one another, And who can be saved? 10:27But Jesus looking on them says, With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God. 10:28Peter began to say to him, Behold, *we* have left all things and have followed thee. 10:29Jesus answering said, Verily I say to you, There is no one who has left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, [or wife], or children, or lands, for my sake and for the sake of the gospel, 10:30that shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time: houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions, and in the coming age life eternal. 10:31But many first shall be last, and the last first. 10:32And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going on before them; and they were amazed, and were afraid as they followed. And taking the twelve again to [him], he began to tell them what was going to happen to him: 10:33Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be delivered up to the chief priests and to the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him up to the nations: 10:34and they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him; and after three days he shall rise again. 10:35And there come to him James and John, the sons of Zebedee, saying [to him], Teacher, we would that whatsoever we may ask thee, thou wouldst do it for us. 10:36And he said to them, What would ye that I should do for you? 10:37And they said to him, Give to us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and one on thy left hand, in thy glory. 10:38And Jesus said to them, Ye do not know what ye ask. Are ye able to drink the cup which *I* drink, or be baptised with the baptism that *I* am baptised with? 10:39And they said to him, We are able. And Jesus said to them, The cup that *I* drink ye will drink and with the baptism that *I* am baptised with ye will be baptised, 10:40but to sit on my right hand or on my left is not mine to give, but for those for whom it is prepared. 10:41And the ten having heard [of it], began to be indignant about James and John. 10:42But Jesus having called them to [him], says to them, Ye know that those who are esteemed to rule over the nations exercise lordship over them; and their great men exercise authority over them; 10:43but it is not thus among you; but whosoever would be great among you, shall be your minister; 10:44and whosoever would be first of you shall be bondman of all. 10:45For also the Son of man did not come to be ministered to, but to minister, and give his life a ransom for many. 10:46And they come to Jericho, and as he was going out from Jericho, and his disciples and a large crowd, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, the blind [man], sat by the wayside begging. 10:47And having heard that it was Jesus the Nazaraean, he began to cry out and to say, O Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me. 10:48And many rebuked him, that he might be silent; but he cried so much the more, Son of David, have mercy on me. 10:49And Jesus, standing still, desired him to be called. And they call the blind [man], saying to him, Be of good courage, rise up, he calls thee. 10:50And, throwing away his garment, he started up and came to Jesus. 10:51And Jesus answering says to him, What wilt thou that I shall do to thee? And the blind [man] said to him, Rabboni, that I may see. 10:52And Jesus said to him, Go, thy faith has healed thee. And he saw immediately, and followed him in the way.
11:1And when they draw near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sends two of his disciples, 11:2and says to them, Go into the village which is over against you, and immediately on entering into it ye will find a colt tied, upon which no [child] of man has ever sat: loose it and lead it [here]. 11:3And if any one say to you, Why do ye this? say, The Lord has need of it; and straightway he sends it hither. 11:4And they departed, and found a colt bound to the door without at the crossway, and they loose him. 11:5And some of those who stood there said to them, What are ye doing, loosing the colt? 11:6And they said to them as Jesus had commanded. And they let them [do it]. 11:7And they led the colt to Jesus, and cast their clothes upon it, and he sat on it; 11:8and many strewed their clothes on the way, and others cut down branches from the trees [and went on strewing them on the way]. 11:9And those going on before and those following cried out, Hosanna! blessed [be] he that comes in [the] Lord's name. 11:10Blessed [be] the coming kingdom of our father David. Hosanna in the highest! 11:11And he entered into Jerusalem and into the temple; and having looked round on all things, the hour being already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. 11:12And on the morrow, when they were gone out of Bethany, he hungered. 11:13And seeing from afar off a fig-tree which had leaves, he came, if perhaps he might find something on it. And having come up to it he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the time of figs. 11:14And answering he said to it, Let no one eat fruit of thee any more for ever. And his disciples heard [it]. 11:15And they come to Jerusalem, and entering into the temple, he began to cast out those who sold and who bought in the temple, and he overthrew the tables of the moneychangers and the seats of the dove-sellers, 11:16and suffered not that any one should carry any package through the temple. 11:17And he taught saying to them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? but *ye* have made it a den of robbers. 11:18And the chief priests and the scribes heard [it], and they sought how they might destroy him; for they feared him, because all the crowd were astonished at his doctrine. 11:19And when it was evening he went forth without the city. 11:20And passing by early in the morning they saw the fig-tree dried up from the roots. 11:21And Peter, remembering [what Jesus had said], says to him, Rabbi, see, the fig-tree which thou cursedst is dried up. 11:22And Jesus answering says to them, Have faith in God. 11:23Verily I say to you, that whosoever shall say to this mountain, Be thou taken away and cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but believe that what he says takes place, whatever he shall say shall come to pass for him. 11:24For this reason I say to you, All things whatsoever ye pray for and ask, believe that ye receive it, and it shall come to pass for you. 11:25And when ye stand praying, forgive if ye have anything against any one, that your Father also who is in the heavens may forgive you your offences. 11:26But if *ye* do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in the heavens forgive your offences. 11:27And they come again to Jerusalem. And as he walked about in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders come to him, 11:28and they say to him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority, that thou shouldest do these things? 11:29And Jesus answering said to them, *I* also will ask you one thing, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things: 11:30The baptism of John, was it of heaven, or of men? answer me. 11:31And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we should say, Of heaven, he will say, Why [then] have ye not believed him? 11:32but should we say, Of men they feared the people; for all held of John that he was truly a prophet. 11:33And they answering say to Jesus, We do not know. And Jesus [answering] says to them, Neither do *I* tell you by what authority I do these things.
12:1And he began to say to them in parables, A man planted a vineyard, and made a fence round [it] and dug a wine-vat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country. 12:2And he sent a bondman to the husbandmen at the season, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard. 12:3But they took him, and beat [him], and sent [him] away empty. 12:4And again he sent to them another bondman; and [at] him they [threw stones, and] struck [him] on the head, and sent [him] away with insult. 12:5And [again] he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some and killing some. 12:6Having yet therefore one beloved son, he sent also him to them the last, saying, They will have respect for my son. 12:7But those husbandmen said to one another, This is the heir: come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours. 12:8And they took him and killed him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard. 12:9What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. 12:10Have ye not even read this scripture, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone: 12:11this is of [the] Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes? 12:12And they sought to lay hold of him, and they feared the crowd; for they knew that he had spoken the parable of them. And they left him and went away. 12:13And they send to him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they might catch him in speaking. 12:14And they come and say to him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest not for any one; for thou regardest not men's person, but teachest the way of God with truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not? 12:15Should we give, or should we not give? But he knowing their hypocrisy said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Bring me a denarius that I may see [it]. 12:16And they brought [it]. And he says to them, Whose [is] this image and superscription? And they said to him, Caesar's. 12:17And Jesus answering said to them, Pay what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God. And they wondered at him. 12:18And Sadducees come to him, that say there is no resurrection; and they demanded of him saying, 12:19Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if any one's brother die, and leave a wife behind, and leave no children, that his brother shall take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother. 12:20There were seven brethren; and the first took a wife, and dying did not leave seed; 12:21and the second took her and died, and neither did he leave seed; and the third likewise. 12:22And the seven [took her and] did not leave seed. Last of all the woman also died. 12:23In the resurrection, when they shall rise again, of which of them shall she be wife, for the seven had her as wife? 12:24And Jesus answering said to them, Do not ye therefore err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God? 12:25For when they rise from among [the] dead they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels [who are] in the heavens. 12:26But concerning the dead that they rise, have ye not read in the book of Moses, in [the section of] the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, *I* [am] the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? 12:27He is not the God of [the] dead, but of [the] living. *Ye* therefore greatly err. 12:28And one of the scribes who had come up, and had heard them reasoning together, perceiving that he had answered them well, demanded of him, Which is [the] first commandment of all? 12:29And Jesus answered him, [The] first commandment of all [is], Hear, Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord; 12:30and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding, and with all thy strength. This is [the] first commandment. 12:31And a second like it [is] this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is not another commandment greater than these. 12:32And the scribe said to him, Right, teacher; thou hast spoken according to [the] truth. For he is one, and there is none other besides him; 12:33and to love him with all the heart, and with all the intelligence, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbour as one's self, is more than all the burnt-offerings and sacrifices. 12:34And Jesus, seeing that he had answered intelligently, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no one dared question him any more. 12:35And Jesus answering said [as he was] teaching in the temple, How do the scribes say that the Christ is son of David? 12:36[for] David himself said [speaking] in the Holy Spirit, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand until I put thine enemies [as] footstool of thy feet. 12:37David himself [therefore] calls him Lord, and whence is he his son? And the mass of the people heard him gladly. 12:38And he said to them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and salutations in the marketplaces, 12:39and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers; 12:40who devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. These shall receive a severer judgment. 12:41And Jesus, having sat down opposite the treasury, saw how the crowd was casting money into the treasury; and many rich cast in much. 12:42And a poor widow came and cast in two mites, which is a farthing. 12:43And having called his disciples to [him] he said to them, Verily I say unto you, This poor widow has cast in more than all who have cast into the treasury: 12:44for all have cast in of that which they had in abundance, but she of her destitution has cast in all that she had, the whole of her living.
13:1And as he was going out of the temple, one of his disciples says to him, Teacher, see what stones and what buildings! 13:2And Jesus answering said to him, Seest thou these great buildings? not a stone shall be left upon a stone, which shall not be thrown down. 13:3And as he sat on the mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 13:4Tell us, when shall these things be, and what is the sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled? 13:5And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any one mislead you. 13:6For many shall come in my name, saying, It is *I*, and shall mislead many. 13:7But when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be not disturbed, for [this] must happen, but the end is not yet. 13:8For nation shall rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be earthquakes in [different] places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these things [are the] beginnings of throes. 13:9But *ye*, take heed to yourselves, for they shall deliver you up to sanhedrims and to synagogues: ye shall be beaten and brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them; 13:10and the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 13:11But when they shall lead you away to deliver you up, be not careful beforehand as to what ye shall say, [nor prepare your discourse]: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak; for *ye* are not the speakers, but the Holy Spirit. 13:12But brother shall deliver up brother to death, and father child; and children shall rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death. 13:13And ye will be hated of all on account of my name; but he that has endured to the end, *he* shall be saved. 13:14But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not, (he that reads let him consider [it],) then let those in Judaea flee to the mountains; 13:15and him that is upon the housetop not come down into the house, nor enter [into it] to take away anything out of his house; 13:16and him that is in the field not return back to take his garment. 13:17But woe to those that are with child and to those that give suck in those days! 13:18And pray that it may not be in winter time; 13:19for those days shall be distress such as there has not been the like since [the] beginning of creation which God created, until now, and never shall be; 13:20and if [the] Lord had not cut short those days, no flesh should have been saved; but on account of the elect whom he has chosen, he has cut short those days. 13:21And then if any one say to you, Lo, here [is] the Christ, or Lo, there, believe [it] not. 13:22For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and give signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 13:23But do *ye* take heed: behold, I have told you all things beforehand. 13:24But in those days, after that distress, the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give its light; 13:25and the stars of heaven shall be falling down, and the powers which are in the heavens shall be shaken; 13:26and then shall they see the Son of man coming in clouds with great power and glory; 13:27and then shall he send his angels and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from end of earth to end of heaven. 13:28But learn the parable from the fig-tree: when its branch already becomes tender and puts forth the leaves, ye know that the summer is near. 13:29Thus also *ye*, when ye see these things happening, know that it is near, at the doors. 13:30Verily I say unto you, This generation shall in no wise pass away, till all these things take place. 13:31The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall in no wise pass away. 13:32But of that day or of that hour no one knows, neither the angels who are in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father. 13:33Take heed, watch and pray, for ye do not know when the time is: 13:34[it is] as a man gone out of the country, having left his house and given to his bondmen the authority, and to each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper that he should watch. 13:35Watch therefore, for ye do not know when the master of the house comes: evening, or midnight, or cock-crow, or morning; 13:36lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. 13:37But what I say to you, I say to all, Watch.
14:1Now the passover and the [feast of] unleavened bread was after two days. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might seize him by subtlety and kill him. 14:2For they said, Not in the feast, lest perhaps there be a tumult of the people. 14:3And when he was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he lay at table, there came a woman having an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly; and having broken the alabaster flask, she poured it out upon his head. 14:4And there were some indignant in themselves, and saying, Why has this waste been made of the ointment? 14:5for this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor. And they spoke very angrily at her. 14:6But Jesus said, Let her alone; why do ye trouble her? she has wrought a good work as to me; 14:7for ye have the poor always with you, and whenever ye would ye can do them good; but me ye have not always. 14:8What *she* could she has done. She has beforehand anointed my body for the burial. 14:9And verily I say unto you, Wheresoever these glad tidings may be preached in the whole world, what this [woman] has done shall be also spoken of for a memorial of her. 14:10And Judas Iscariote, one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests that he might deliver him up to them; 14:11and they, when they heard it, rejoiced, and promised him to give money. And he sought how he could opportunely deliver him up. 14:12And the first day of unleavened bread, when they slew the passover, his disciples say to him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare, that thou mayest eat the passover? 14:13And he sends two of his disciples, and says to them, Go into the city, and a man shall meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. 14:14And wheresoever he enters, say to the master of the house, The Teacher says, Where is my guest-chamber where I may eat the passover with my disciples? 14:15and *he* will shew you a large upper room furnished ready. There make ready for us. 14:16And his disciples went away and came into the city, and found as he had said to them; and they made ready the passover. 14:17And when evening was come, he comes with the twelve. 14:18And as they lay at table and were eating, Jesus said, Verily I say to you, One of you shall deliver me up; he who is eating with me. 14:19And they began to be grieved, and to say to him, one by one, Is it *I*? [and another, Is it *I*?] 14:20But he answered and said to them, One of the twelve, he who dips with me in the dish. 14:21The Son of man goes indeed as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up; [it were] good for that man if he had not been born. 14:22And as they were eating, Jesus, having taken bread, when he had blessed, broke [it], and gave [it] to them, and said, Take [this]: this is my body. 14:23And having taken [the] cup, when he had given thanks, he gave [it] to them, and they all drank out of it. 14:24And he said to them, This is my blood, that of the [new] covenant, that shed for many. 14:25Verily I say to you, I will no more drink at all of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. 14:26And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives. 14:27And Jesus says to them, All ye shall be offended, for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered abroad. 14:28But after I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. 14:29But Peter said to him, Even if all should be offended, yet not *I*. 14:30And Jesus says to him, Verily I say to thee, that thou to-day, in this night, before [the] cock shall crow twice, thou shalt thrice deny me. 14:31But he said [so much] exceedingly the more, If I should have to die with thee, I will in no wise deny thee. And likewise said they all too. 14:32And they come to a place of which the name [is] Gethsemane, and he says to his disciples, Sit here while I shall pray. 14:33And he takes with him Peter and James and John, and he began to be amazed and oppressed in spirit. 14:34And he says to them, My soul is full of grief even unto death; abide here and watch. 14:35And, going forward a little, he fell upon the earth; and he prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him. 14:36And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee: take away this cup from me; but not what *I* will, but what *thou* [wilt]. 14:37And he comes and finds them sleeping. And he says to Peter, Simon, dost thou sleep? Hast thou not been able to watch one hour? 14:38Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed [is] willing, but the flesh weak. 14:39And going away, he prayed again, saying the same thing. 14:40And returning, he found them again sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they knew not what they should answer him. 14:41And he comes the third time and says to them, Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough; the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is delivered up into the hands of sinners. 14:42Arise, let us go; behold, he that delivers me up has drawn nigh. 14:43And immediately, while he was yet speaking, Judas comes up, [being] one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd, with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 14:44Now he that delivered him up had given them a sign between them, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he; seize him, and lead [him] away safely. 14:45And being come, straightway coming up to him, he says, Rabbi, Rabbi; and he covered him with kisses. 14:46And they laid their hands upon him and seized him. 14:47But a certain one of those who stood by, having drawn his sword, struck the bondman of the high priest, and took off his ear. 14:48And Jesus answering said to them, Are ye come out as against a robber, with swords and sticks to take me? 14:49I was daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye did not seize me; but [it is] that the scriptures may be fulfilled. 14:50And all left him and fled. 14:51And a certain young man followed him with a linen cloth cast about his naked [body]; and [the young men] seize him; 14:52but he, leaving the linen cloth behind [him], fled from them naked. 14:53And they led away Jesus to the high priest. And there come together to him all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. 14:54And Peter followed him at a distance, till [he was] within the court of the high priest's palace; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself in the light [of the fire]. 14:55And the chief priests and the whole sanhedrim sought testimony against Jesus to cause him to be put to death, and did not find [any]. 14:56For many bore false witness against him, and their testimony did not agree. 14:57And certain persons rose up and bore false witness against him, saying, 14:58*We* heard him saying, *I* will destroy this temple which is made with hands, and in the course of three days I will build another not made with hands. 14:59And neither thus did their testimony agree. 14:60And the high priest, rising up before them all, asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? What do these testify against thee? 14:61But he was silent, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and says to him, *Thou* art the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? 14:62And Jesus said, *I* am, and ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven. 14:63And the high priest, having rent his clothes, says, What need have we any more of witnesses? 14:64Ye have heard the blasphemy; what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. 14:65And some began to spit upon him, and cover up his face, and buffet him, and say to him, Prophesy; and the officers struck him with the palms of their hands. 14:66And Peter being below in the palace-court, there comes one of the maids of the high priest, 14:67and seeing Peter warming himself, having looked at him, says, And *thou* wast with the Nazarene, Jesus. 14:68But he denied, saying, I know not nor understand what thou sayest. And he went out into the vestibule; and a cock crew. 14:69And the maid, seeing him, again began to say to those that stood by, This is [one] of them. 14:70And he again denied. And again, after a little, those that stood by said to Peter, Truly thou art [one] of them, for also thou art a Galilean. 14:71But he began to curse and to swear, I know not this man of whom ye speak. 14:72And the second time a cock crew. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus said to him, Before [the] cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice; and when he thought thereon he wept.
15:1And immediately in the morning the chief priests, having taken counsel with the elders and scribes and the whole sanhedrim, bound Jesus and carried [him] away, and delivered [him] up to Pilate. 15:2And Pilate asked him, Art *thou* the King of the Jews? And he answered and said to him, *Thou* sayest. 15:3And the chief priests accused him urgently. 15:4And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? See of how many things they bear witness against thee. 15:5But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marvelled. 15:6But at [the] feast he released to them one prisoner, whomsoever they begged [of him]. 15:7Now there was the [person] named Barabbas bound with those who had made insurrection with [him], [and] that had committed murder in the insurrection. 15:8And the crowd crying out began to beg [that he would do] to them as he had always done. 15:9But Pilate answered them saying, Will ye that I release to you the King of the Jews? 15:10for he knew that the chief priests had delivered him up through envy. 15:11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd that he might rather release Barabbas to them. 15:12And Pilate answering said to them again, What will ye then that I do [to him] whom ye call King of the Jews? 15:13And they cried out again, Crucify him. 15:14And Pilate said to them, What evil then has he done? But they cried out the more urgently, Crucify him. 15:15And Pilate, desirous of contenting the crowd, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus, when he had scourged him, that he might be crucified. 15:16And the soldiers led him away into the court which is [called the] praetorium, and they call together the whole band. 15:17And they clothe him with purple, and bind round on him a crown of thorns which they had plaited. 15:18And they began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! 15:19And they struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and, bending the knee, did him homage. 15:20And when they had mocked him, they took the purple off him, and put his own clothes on him; and they lead him out that they may crucify him. 15:21And they compel to go [with them] a certain passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus, that he might carry his cross. 15:22And they bring him to the place [called] Golgotha, which, being interpreted, is Place of a skull. 15:23And they offered him wine [to drink] medicated with myrrh; but he did not take [it]. 15:24And having crucified him, they part his clothes amongst [themselves], casting lots on them, what each one should take. 15:25And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. 15:26And the superscription of what he was accused of was written up: The King of the Jews. 15:27And with him they crucify two robbers, one on his right hand, and one on his left. 15:28[And the scripture was fulfilled which says, And he was reckoned with the lawless.] 15:29And they that passed by reviled him, shaking their heads, and saying, Aha, thou that destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days, 15:30save thyself, and descend from the cross. 15:31In like manner the chief priests also, with the scribes, mocking with one another, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. 15:32Let the Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and may believe. And they that were crucified with him reproached him. 15:33And when [the] sixth hour was come, there came darkness over the whole land until [the] ninth hour; 15:34and at the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, [saying], Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 15:35And some of those who stood by, when they heard [it], said, Behold, he calls for Elias. 15:36And one, running and filling a sponge with vinegar, fixed it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone, let us see if Elias comes to take him down. 15:37And Jesus, having uttered a loud cry, expired. 15:38And the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom. 15:39And the centurion who stood by over against him, when he saw that he had expired having thus cried out, said, Truly this man was Son of God. 15:40And there were women also looking on from afar off, among whom were both Mary of Magdala, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; 15:41who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered to him; and many others who came up with him to Jerusalem. 15:42And when it was already evening, since it was [the] preparation, that is, [the day] before a sabbath, 15:43Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable councillor, who also himself was awaiting the kingdom of God, coming, emboldened himself and went in to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus. 15:44And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and having called to [him] the centurion, he inquired of him if he had long died. 15:45And when he knew from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 15:46And having bought fine linen, [and] having taken him down, he swathed him in the fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was cut out of rock, and rolled a stone to the door of the sepulchre. 15:47And Mary of Magdala and Mary the [mother] of Joses saw where he was put.
16:1And the sabbath being [now] past, Mary of Magdala, and Mary the [mother] of James, and Salome, bought aromatic spices that they might come and embalm him. 16:2And very early on the first [day] of the week they come to the sepulchre, the sun having risen. 16:3And they said to one another, Who shall roll us away the stone out of the door of the sepulchre? 16:4And when they looked, they see that the stone has been rolled [away], for it was very great. 16:5And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right, clothed in a white robe, and they were amazed and alarmed; 16:6but he says to them, Be not alarmed. Ye seek Jesus, the Nazarene, the crucified one. He is risen, he is not here; behold the place where they had put him. 16:7But go, tell his disciples and Peter, he goes before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him, as he said to you. 16:8And they went out, and fled from the sepulchre. And trembling and excessive amazement possessed them, and they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid. 16:9Now when he had risen very early, the first [day] of the week, he appeared first to Mary of Magdala, out of whom he had cast seven demons. 16:10*She* went and brought word to those that had been with him, [who were] grieving and weeping. 16:11And when these heard that he was alive and had been seen of her, they disbelieved [it]. 16:12And after these things he was manifested in another form to two of them as they walked, going into the country; 16:13and *they* went and brought word to the rest; neither did they believe them. 16:14Afterwards as they lay at table he was manifested to the eleven, and reproached [them with] their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen him risen. 16:15And he said to them, Go into all the world, and preach the glad tidings to all the creation. 16:16He that believes and is baptised shall be saved, and he that disbelieves shall be condemned. 16:17And these signs shall follow those that have believed: in my name they shall cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues; 16:18they shall take up serpents; and if they should drink any deadly thing it shall not injure them; they shall lay hands upon the infirm, and they shall be well. 16:19The Lord therefore, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat at the right hand of God. 16:20And they, going forth, preached everywhere, the Lord working with [them], and confirming the word by the signs following upon [it].
Luke
1:1Forasmuch as many have undertaken to draw up a relation concerning the matters fully believed among us, 1:2as those who from the beginning were eye-witnesses of and attendants on the Word have delivered them to us, 1:3it has seemed good to *me* also, accurately acquainted from the origin with all things, to write to thee with method, most excellent Theophilus, 1:4that thou mightest know the certainty of those things in which thou hast been instructed. 1:5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abia, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth. 1:6And they were both just before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 1:7And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years. 1:8And it came to pass, as he fulfilled his priestly service before God in the order of his course, 1:9it fell to him by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter into the temple of the Lord to burn incense. 1:10And all the multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense. 1:11And an angel of [the] Lord appeared to him, standing on the right of the altar of incense. 1:12And Zacharias was troubled, seeing [him], and fear fell upon him. 1:13But the angel said to him, Fear not, Zacharias, because thy supplication has been heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 1:14And he shall be to thee joy and rejoicing, and many shall rejoice at his birth. 1:15For he shall be great before [the] Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with [the] Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. 1:16And many of the sons of Israel shall he turn to [the] Lord their God. 1:17And *he* shall go before him in [the] spirit and power of Elias, to turn hearts of fathers to children, and disobedient ones to [the] thoughts of just [men], to make ready for [the] Lord a prepared people. 1:18And Zacharias said to the angel, How shall I know this, for *I* am an old man, and my wife advanced in years? 1:19And the angel answering, said to him, *I* am Gabriel, who stand before God, and I have been sent to speak to thee, and to bring these glad tidings to thee; 1:20and behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, till the day in which these things shall take place, because thou hast not believed my words, the which shall be fulfilled in their time. 1:21And the people were awaiting Zacharias, and they wondered at his delaying in the temple. 1:22But when he came out he could not speak to them, and they recognised that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he was making signs to them, and continued dumb. 1:23And it came to pass, when the days of his service were completed, he departed to his house. 1:24Now after these days, Elizabeth his wife conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, 1:25Thus has [the] Lord done to me in [these] days in which he looked upon [me] to take away my reproach among men. 1:26But in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent of God to a city of Galilee, of which [the] name [was] Nazareth, 1:27to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name [was] Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name [was] Mary. 1:28And the angel came in to her, and said, Hail, [thou] favoured one! the Lord [is] with thee: [blessed art *thou* amongst women]. 1:29But she, [seeing] [the angel], was troubled at his word, and reasoned in her mind what this salutation might be. 1:30And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God; 1:31and behold, thou shalt conceive in the womb and bear a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus. 1:32*He* shall be great, and shall be called Son of [the] Highest; and [the] Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father; 1:33and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for the ages, and of his kingdom there shall not be an end. 1:34But Mary said to the angel, How shall this be, since I know not a man? 1:35And the angel answering said to her, [The] Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and power of [the] Highest overshadow thee, wherefore the holy thing also which shall be born shall be called Son of God. 1:36And behold, Elizabeth, thy kinswoman, she also has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her that was called barren: 1:37for nothing shall be impossible with God. 1:38And Mary said, Behold the bondmaid of [the] Lord; be it to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. 1:39And Mary, rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah, 1:40and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elizabeth. 1:41And it came to pass, as Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with [the] Holy Spirit, 1:42and cried out with a loud voice and said, Blessed [art] *thou* amongst women, and blessed the fruit of thy womb. 1:43And whence [is] this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 1:44For behold, as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped with joy in my womb. 1:45And blessed [is] she that has believed, for there shall be a fulfilment of the things spoken to her from [the] Lord. 1:46And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord, 1:47and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour. 1:48For he has looked upon the low estate of his bondmaid; for behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 1:49For the Mighty One has done to me great things, and holy [is] his name; 1:50and his mercy [is] to generations and generations to them that fear him. 1:51He has wrought strength with his arm; he has scattered haughty [ones] in the thought of their heart. 1:52He has put down rulers from thrones, and exalted the lowly. 1:53He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent away the rich empty. 1:54He has helped Israel his servant, in order to remember mercy, 1:55(as he spoke to our fathers,) to Abraham and to his seed for ever. 1:56And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her house. 1:57But the time was fulfilled for Elizabeth that she should bring forth, and she gave birth to a son. 1:58And her neighbours and kinsfolk heard that [the] Lord had magnified his mercy with her, and they rejoiced with her. 1:59And it came to pass on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called it after the name of his father, Zacharias. 1:60And his mother answering said, No; but he shall be called John. 1:61And they said to her, There is no one among thy kinsfolk who is called by this name. 1:62And they made signs to his father as to what he might wish it to be called. 1:63And having asked for a writing-table, he wrote saying, John is his name. And they all wondered. 1:64And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue, and he spake, blessing God. 1:65And fear came upon all who dwelt round about them; and in the whole hill-country of Judaea all these things were the subject of conversation. 1:66And all who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then will this child be? And [the] Lord's hand was with him. 1:67And Zacharias his father was filled with [the] Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, 1:68Blessed be [the] Lord the God of Israel, because he has visited and wrought redemption for his people, 1:69and raised up a horn of deliverance for us in the house of David his servant; 1:70as he spoke by [the] mouth of his holy prophets, who have been since the world began; 1:71deliverance from our enemies and out of the hand of all who hate us; 1:72to fulfil mercy with our fathers and remember his holy covenant, 1:73[the] oath which he swore to Abraham our father, 1:74to give us, that, saved out of the hand of our enemies, we should serve him without fear 1:75in piety and righteousness before him all our days. 1:76And *thou*, child, shalt be called [the] prophet of [the] Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of [the] Lord to make ready his ways; 1:77to give knowledge of deliverance to his people by [the] remission of their sins 1:78on account of [the] bowels of mercy of our God; wherein [the] dayspring from on high has visited us, 1:79to shine upon them who were sitting in darkness and in [the] shadow of death, to guide our feet into [the] way of peace. 1:80And the child grew and was strengthened in spirit; and he was in the deserts until the day of his shewing to Israel.
2:1But it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census should be made of all the habitable world. 2:2The census itself first took place when Cyrenius had the government of Syria. 2:3And all went to be inscribed in the census roll, each to his own city: 2:4and Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city Nazareth to Judaea, to David's city, the which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 2:5to be inscribed in the census roll with Mary who was betrothed to him [as his] wife, she being great with child. 2:6And it came to pass, while they were there, the days of her giving birth [to her child] were fulfilled, 2:7and she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him up in swaddling-clothes and laid him in the manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 2:8And there were shepherds in that country abiding without, and keeping watch by night over their flock. 2:9And lo, an angel of [the] Lord was there by them, and [the] glory of [the] Lord shone around them, and they feared [with] great fear. 2:10And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I announce to you glad tidings of great joy, which shall be to all the people; 2:11for to-day a Saviour has been born to you in David's city, who is Christ [the] Lord. 2:12And this is the sign to you: ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling-clothes, and lying in a manger. 2:13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 2:14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good pleasure in men. 2:15And it came to pass, as the angels departed from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, Let us make our way then now as far as Bethlehem, and let us see this thing that is come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us. 2:16And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger; 2:17and having seen [it] they made known about the country the thing which had been said to them concerning this child. 2:18And all who heard [it] wondered at the things said to them by the shepherds. 2:19But Mary kept all these things [in her mind], pondering [them] in her heart. 2:20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all things which they had heard and seen, as it had been said to them. 2:21And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called Jesus, which was the name given by the angel before he had been conceived in the womb. 2:22And when the days were fulfilled for their purifying according to the law of Moses, they brought him to Jerusalem to present [him] to the Lord 2:23(as it is written in the law of [the] Lord: Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord), 2:24and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of [the] Lord: A pair of turtle doves, or two young pigeons. 2:25And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was just and pious, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and [the] Holy Spirit was upon him. 2:26And it was divinely communicated to him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death before he should see [the] Lord's Christ. 2:27And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and as the parents brought in the child Jesus that they might do for him according to the custom of the law, 2:28*he* received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, 2:29Lord, now thou lettest thy bondman go, according to thy word, in peace; 2:30for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 2:31which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples; 2:32a light for revelation of [the] Gentiles and [the] glory of thy people Israel. 2:33And his father and mother wondered at the things which were said concerning him. 2:34And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Lo, this [child] is set for the fall and rising up of many in Israel, and for a sign spoken against; 2:35(and even a sword shall go through thine own soul;) so that [the] thoughts may be revealed from many hearts. 2:36And there was a prophetess, Anna, daughter of Phanuel, of [the] tribe of Asher, who was far advanced in years, having lived with [her] husband seven years from her virginity, 2:37and herself a widow up to eighty-four years; who did not depart from the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers; 2:38and she coming up the same hour gave praise to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who waited for redemption in Jerusalem. 2:39And when they had completed all things according to the law of [the] Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own city Nazareth. 2:40And the child grew and waxed strong [in spirit], filled with wisdom, and God's grace was upon him. 2:41And his parents went yearly to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover. 2:42And when he was twelve years old, and they went up [to Jerusalem] according to the custom of the feast 2:43and had completed the days, as they returned, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, and his parents knew not [of it]; 2:44but, supposing him to be in the company that journeyed together, they went a day's journey, and sought him among their relations and acquaintances: 2:45and not having found him they returned to Jerusalem seeking him. 2:46And it came to pass, after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers and hearing them and asking them questions. 2:47And all who heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 2:48And when they saw him they were amazed: and his mother said to him, Child, why hast thou dealt thus with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee distressed. 2:49And he said to them, Why [is it] that ye have sought me? did ye not know that I ought to be [occupied] in my Father's business? 2:50And they understood not the thing that he said to them. 2:51And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and he was in subjection to them. And his mother kept all these things in her heart. 2:52And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men.
3:1Now in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Ituraea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 3:2in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, [the] word of God came upon John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. 3:3And he came into all the district round the Jordan, preaching [the] baptism of repentance for [the] remission of sins, 3:4as it is written in [the] book of [the] words of Esaias the prophet: Voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of [the] Lord, make straight his paths. 3:5Every gorge shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked [places] shall become a straight [path], and the rough places smooth ways, 3:6and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 3:7He said therefore to the crowds which went out to be baptised by him, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath? 3:8Produce therefore fruits worthy of repentance; and begin not to say in yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father, for I say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 3:9And already also the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into [the] fire. 3:10And the crowds asked him saying, What should we do then? 3:11And he answering says to them, He that has two body-coats, let him give to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise. 3:12And tax-gatherers came also to be baptised, and they said to him, Teacher, what should we do? 3:13And he said to them, Take no more [money] than what is appointed to you. 3:14And persons engaged in military service also asked him saying, And we, what should we do? And he said to them, Oppress no one, nor accuse falsely, and be satisfied with your pay. 3:15But as the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John whether *he* might be the Christ, 3:16John answered all, saying, *I* indeed baptise you with water, but the mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to unloose; *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire; 3:17whose winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. 3:18Exhorting then many other things also he announced [his] glad tidings to the people. 3:19But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him as to Herodias, the wife of his brother, and as to all the wicked things which Herod had done, 3:20added this also to all [the rest], that he shut up John in prison. 3:21And it came to pass, all the people having been baptised, and Jesus having been baptised and praying, that the heaven was opened, 3:22and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form as a dove upon him; and a voice came out of heaven, *Thou* art my beloved Son, in thee I have found my delight. 3:23And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years old; being as was supposed son of Joseph; of Eli, 3:24of Matthat, of Levi, of Melchi, of Janna, of Joseph, 3:25of Mattathias, of Amos, of Naoum, of Esli, of Naggai, 3:26of Maath, of Mattathias, of Semei, of Joseph, of Juda, 3:27of Joannes, of Resa, of Zorobabel, of Salathiel, of Neri, 3:28of Melchi, of Addi, of Cosam, of Elmodam, of Er, 3:29of Joses, of Eliezer, of Joreim, of Matthat, of Levi, 3:30of Simeon, of Juda, of Joseph, of Jonan, of Eliakim, 3:31of Meleas, of Menan, of Mattatha, of Nathan, of David, 3:32of Jesse, of Obed, of Booz, of Salmon, of Naasson, 3:33of Aminadab, of Aram, of Esrom, of Phares, of Juda, 3:34of Jacob, of Isaac, of Abraham, of Terah, of Nachor, 3:35of Seruch, of Ragau, of Phalek, of Eber, of Sala, 3:36of Cainan, of Arphaxad, of Sem, of Noe, of Lamech, 3:37of Methusala, of Enoch, of Jared, of Maleleel, of Cainan, 3:38of Enos, of Seth, of Adam, of God.
4:1But Jesus, full of [the] Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 4:2forty days, tempted of the devil; and in those days he did not eat anything, and when they were finished he hungered. 4:3And the devil said to him, If thou be Son of God, speak to this stone, that it become bread. 4:4And Jesus answered unto him saying, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 4:5And [the devil], leading him up into a high mountain, shewed him all the kingdoms of the habitable world in a moment of time. 4:6And the devil said to him, I will give thee all this power, and their glory; for it is given up to me, and to whomsoever I will I give it. 4:7If therefore *thou* wilt do homage before me, all [of it] shall be thine. 4:8And Jesus answering him said, It is written, Thou shalt do homage to [the] Lord thy God, and him alone shalt thou serve. 4:9And he led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the edge of the temple, and said to him, If thou be Son of God, cast thyself down hence; 4:10for it is written, He shall give charge to his angels concerning thee to keep thee; 4:11and on [their] hands shall they bear thee, lest in any wise thou strike thy foot against a stone. 4:12And Jesus answering said to him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt [the] Lord thy God. 4:13And the devil, having completed every temptation, departed from him for a time. 4:14And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee; and a rumour went out into the whole surrounding country about him; 4:15and *he* taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. 4:16And he came to Nazareth, where he was brought up; and he entered, according to his custom, into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read. 4:17And [the] book of the prophet Esaias was given to him; and having unrolled the book he found the place where it was written, 4:18[The] Spirit of [the] Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach glad tidings to [the] poor; he has sent me to preach to captives deliverance, and to [the] blind sight, to send forth [the] crushed delivered, 4:19to preach [the] acceptable year of [the] Lord. 4:20And having rolled up the book, when he had delivered it up to the attendant, he sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon him. 4:21And he began to say to them, To-day this scripture is fulfilled in your ears. 4:22And all bore witness to him, and wondered at the words of grace which were coming out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this the son of Joseph? 4:23And he said to them, Ye will surely say to me this parable, Physician, heal thyself; whatsoever we have heard has taken place in Capernaum do here also in thine own country. 4:24And he said, Verily I say to you, that no prophet is acceptable in his [own] country. 4:25But of a truth I say to you, There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, so that a great famine came upon all the land, 4:26and to none of them was Elias sent but to Sarepta of Sidonia, to a woman [that was] a widow. 4:27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian. 4:28And they were all filled with rage in the synagogue, hearing these things; 4:29and rising up they cast him forth out of the city, and led him up to the brow of the mountain upon which their city was built, so that they might throw him down the precipice; 4:30but *he*, passing through the midst of them, went his way, 4:31and descended to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbaths. 4:32And they were astonished at his doctrine, for his word was with authority. 4:33And there was in the synagogue a man having a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried with a loud voice, 4:34saying, Eh! what have we to do with thee, Jesus, Nazarene? hast thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy [One] of God. 4:35And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out from him. And the demon, having thrown him down into the midst, came out from him without doing him any injury. 4:36And astonishment came upon all, and they spoke to one another, saying, What word [is] this? for with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out. 4:37And a rumour went out into every place of the country round concerning him. 4:38And rising up out of the synagogue, he entered into the house of Simon. But Simon's mother-in-law was suffering under a bad fever; and they asked him for her. 4:39And standing over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her; and forthwith standing up she served them. 4:40And when the sun went down, all, as many as had persons sick with divers diseases, brought them to him, and having laid his hands on every one of them, he healed them; 4:41and demons also went out from many, crying out and saying, *Thou* art the Son of God. And rebuking them, he suffered them not to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ. 4:42And when it was day he went out, and went into a desert place, and the crowds sought after him, and came up to him, and [would have] kept him back that he should not go from them. 4:43But he said to them, I must needs announce the glad tidings of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for for this I have been sent forth. 4:44And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
5:1And it came to pass, as the crowd pressed on him to hear the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret: 5:2and he saw two ships standing by the lake, but the fishermen, having come down from them, were washing their nets. 5:3And getting into one of the ships, which was Simon's, he asked him to draw out a little from the land; and he sat down and taught the crowds out of the ship. 5:4But when he ceased speaking, he said to Simon, Draw out into the deep [water] and let down your nets for a haul. 5:5And Simon answering said to him, Master, having laboured through the whole night we have taken nothing, but at thy word I will let down the net. 5:6And having done this, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes. And their net broke. 5:7And they beckoned to their partners who were in the other ship to come and help them, and they came, and filled both the ships, so that they were sinking. 5:8But Simon Peter, seeing it, fell at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord. 5:9For astonishment had laid hold on him, and on all those who were with him, at the haul of fishes which they had taken; 5:10and in like manner also on James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Fear not; henceforth thou shalt be catching men. 5:11And having run the ships on shore, leaving all they followed him. 5:12And it came to pass as he was in one of the cities, that behold, there was a man full of leprosy, and seeing Jesus, falling upon his face, he besought him saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou art able to cleanse me. 5:13And stretching forth his hand he touched him, saying, I will; be thou cleansed: and immediately the leprosy departed from him. 5:14And he enjoined him to tell no one; but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing as Moses ordained, for a testimony to them. 5:15But the report concerning him was spread abroad still more, and great crowds came together to hear, and to be healed from their infirmities. 5:16And *he* withdrew himself, and was about in the desert [places] and praying. 5:17And it came to pass on one of the days, that *he* was teaching, and there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, who were come out of every village of Galilee and Judaea and [out of] Jerusalem; and [the] Lord's power was [there] to heal them. 5:18And lo, men bringing upon a couch a man who was paralysed; and they sought to bring him in, and put [him] before him. 5:19And not finding what way to bring him in, on account of the crowd, going up on the housetop they let him down through the tiles, with his little couch, into the midst before Jesus. 5:20And seeing their faith, he said, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 5:21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason [in their minds], saying, Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins but God alone? 5:22But Jesus, knowing their reasonings, answering said to them, Why reason ye in your hearts? 5:23which is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? 5:24But that ye may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralysed man, I say to thee, Arise, and take up thy little couch and go to thine house. 5:25And immediately standing up before them, having taken up that whereon he was laid, he departed to his house, glorifying God. 5:26And astonishment seized all, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to-day. 5:27And after these things he went forth and saw a tax-gatherer, Levi by name, sitting at the receipt of taxes, and said to him, Follow me. 5:28And having left all, rising up, he followed him. 5:29And Levi made a great entertainment for him in his house, and there was a great crowd of tax-gatherers and others who were at table with them. 5:30And their scribes and the Pharisees murmured at his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with tax-gatherers and sinners? 5:31And Jesus answering said to them, They that are in sound health have not need of a physician, but those that are ill. 5:32I am not come to call righteous [persons], but sinful [ones] to repentance. 5:33And they said to him, Why do the disciples of John fast often and make supplications, in like manner those also of the Pharisees, but thine eat and drink? 5:34And he said to them, Can ye make the sons of the bridechamber fast when the bridegroom is with them? 5:35But days will come when also the bridegroom will have been taken away from them; then shall they fast in those days. 5:36And he spoke also a parable to them: No one puts a piece of a new garment upon an old garment, otherwise he will both rend the new, and the piece which is from the new will not suit with the old. 5:37And no one puts new wine into old skins, otherwise the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be poured out, and the skins will be destroyed; 5:38but new wine is to be put into new skins, and both are preserved. 5:39And no one having drunk old wine [straightway] wishes for new, for he says, The old is better.
6:1And it came to pass on [the] second-first sabbath, that he went through cornfields, and his disciples were plucking the ears and eating [them], rubbing [them] in their hands. 6:2But some of the Pharisees said to them, Why do ye what is not lawful to do on the sabbath? 6:3And Jesus answering said to them, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did when he hungered, he and those who were with him, 6:4how he entered into the house of God and took the shewbread and ate, and gave to those also who were with him, which it is not lawful that [any] eat, unless the priests alone? 6:5And he said to them, The Son of man is Lord of the sabbath also. 6:6And it came to pass on another sabbath also that he entered into the synagogue and taught; and there was a man there, and his right hand was withered. 6:7And the scribes and the Pharisees were watching if he would heal on the sabbath, that they might find something of which to accuse him. 6:8But *he* knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, Get up, and stand in the midst. And having risen up he stood [there]. 6:9Jesus therefore said to them, I will ask you if it is lawful on the sabbath to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy [it]? 6:10And having looked around on them all, he said to him, Stretch out thy hand. And he did [so] and his hand was restored as the other. 6:11But *they* were filled with madness, and they spoke together among themselves what they should do to Jesus. 6:12And it came to pass in those days that he went out into the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God. 6:13And when it was day he called his disciples, and having chosen out twelve from them, whom also he named apostles: 6:14Simon, to whom also he gave the name of Peter, and Andrew his brother, [and] James and John, [and] Philip and Bartholomew, 6:15[and] Matthew and Thomas, James the [son] of Alphaeus and Simon who was called Zealot, 6:16[and] Judas [brother] of James, and Judas Iscariote, who was also [his] betrayer; 6:17and having descended with them, he stood on a level place, and a crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judaea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; 6:18and those that were beset by unclean spirits were healed. 6:19And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power went out from him and healed all. 6:20And *he*, lifting up his eyes upon his disciples, said, Blessed [are] ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 6:21Blessed ye that hunger now, for ye shall be filled. Blessed ye that weep now, for ye shall laugh. 6:22Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you [from them], and shall reproach [you], and cast out your name as wicked, for the Son of man's sake: 6:23rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in the heaven, for after this manner did their fathers act toward the prophets. 6:24But woe to you rich, for ye have received your consolation. 6:25Woe to you that are filled, for ye shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for ye shall mourn and weep. 6:26Woe, when all men speak well of you, for after this manner did their fathers to the false prophets. 6:27But to you that hear I say, Love your enemies; do good to those that hate you; 6:28bless those that curse you; pray for those who use you despitefully. 6:29To him that smites thee on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him that would take away thy garment, forbid not thy body-coat also. 6:30To every one that asks of thee, give; and from him that takes away what is thine, ask it not back. 6:31And as ye wish that men should do to you, do *ye* also to them in like manner. 6:32And if ye love those that love you, what thank is it to you? for even sinners love those that love them. 6:33And if ye do good to those that do good to you, what thank is it to you? for even sinners do the same. 6:34And if ye lend to those from whom ye hope to receive, what thank is it to you? [for] even sinners lend to sinners that they may receive the like. 6:35But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return, and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of [the] Highest; for *he* is good to the unthankful and wicked. 6:36Be ye therefore merciful, even as your Father also is merciful. 6:37And judge not, and ye shall not be judged; condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned. Remit, and it shall be remitted to you. 6:38Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall be given into your bosom: for with the same measure with which ye mete it shall be measured to you again. 6:39And he spoke also a parable to them: Can a blind [man] lead a blind [man]? shall not both fall into [the] ditch? 6:40The disciple is not above his teacher, but every one that is perfected shall be as his teacher. 6:41But why lookest thou on the mote which is in the eye of thy brother, but perceivest not the beam which is in thine own eye? 6:42or how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, allow [me], I will cast out the mote that is in thine eye, thyself not seeing the beam that is in thine eye? Hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine eye, and then thou shalt see clear to cast out the mote which is in the eye of thy brother. 6:43For there is no good tree which produces corrupt fruit, nor a corrupt tree which produces good fruit; 6:44for every tree is known by its own fruit, for figs are not gathered from thorns, nor grapes vintaged from a bramble. 6:45The good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, brings forth good; and the wicked [man] out of the wicked, brings forth what is wicked: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. 6:46And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things that I say? 6:47Every one that comes to me, and hears my words and does them, I will shew you to whom he is like. 6:48He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock; but a great rain coming, the stream broke upon that house, and could not shake it, for it had been founded on the rock. 6:49And he that has heard and not done, is like a man who has built a house on the ground without [a] foundation, on which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the breach of that house was great.
7:1And when he had completed all his words in the hearing of the people, he entered into Capernaum. 7:2And a certain centurion's bondman who was dear to him was ill and about to die; 7:3and having heard of Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, begging him that he might come and save his bondman. 7:4But they, being come to Jesus, besought him diligently, saying, He is worthy to whom thou shouldest grant this, 7:5for he loves our nation, and himself has built the synagogue for us. 7:6And Jesus went with them. But already, when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent to him friends, saying to him, Lord, do not trouble thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof. 7:7Wherefore neither did I count myself worthy to come to thee. But say by a word and my servant shall be healed. 7:8For *I* also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers, and I say to this [one], Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my bondman, Do this, and he does [it]. 7:9And Jesus hearing this wondered at him, and turning to the crowd following him said, I say to you, Not even in Israel have I found so great faith. 7:10And they who had been sent returning to the house found the bondman, who was ill, in good health. 7:11And it came to pass afterwards he went into a city called Nain, and many of his disciples and a great crowd went with him. 7:12And as he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was carried out, the only son of his mother, and she a widow, and a very considerable crowd of the city [was] with her. 7:13And the Lord, seeing her, was moved with compassion for her, and said to her, Weep not; 7:14and coming up he touched the bier, and the bearers stopped. And he said, Youth, I say to thee, Wake up. 7:15And the dead sat up and began to speak; and he gave him to his mother. 7:16And fear seized on all, and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet has been raised up amongst us; and God has visited his people. 7:17And this report went out in all Judaea concerning him, and in all the surrounding country. 7:18And the disciples of John brought him word concerning all these things: 7:19and John, having called two of his disciples, sent to Jesus, saying, Art *thou* he that is coming, or are we to wait for another? 7:20But the men having come to him said, John the baptist has sent us to thee, saying, Art *thou* he that is coming, or are we to wait for another? 7:21In that hour he healed many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and to many blind he granted sight. 7:22And Jesus answering said to them, Go, bring back word to John of what ye have seen and heard: that blind see, lame walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf hear, dead are raised, poor are evangelized; 7:23and blessed is whosoever shall not be offended in me. 7:24And the messengers of John having departed, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken by the wind? 7:25But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in delicate garments? Behold, those who are in splendid clothing and live luxuriously are in the courts of kings. 7:26But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and [what is] more excellent than a prophet. 7:27This is he concerning whom it is written, Behold, *I* send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee; 7:28for I say unto you, Among them that are born of women a greater [prophet] is no one than John [the baptist]; but he who is a little one in the kingdom of God is greater than he. 7:29(And all the people who heard [it], and the tax-gatherers, justified God, having been baptised with the baptism of John; 7:30but the Pharisees and the lawyers rendered null as to themselves the counsel of God, not having been baptised by him.) 7:31To whom therefore shall I liken the men of this generation, and to whom are they like? 7:32They are like children sitting in the market-place, and calling one to another and saying, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. 7:33For John the baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and ye say, He has a demon. 7:34The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and ye say, Behold an eater and wine-drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners; 7:35and wisdom has been justified of all her children. 7:36But one of the Pharisees begged him that he would eat with him. And entering into the house of the Pharisee he took his place at table; 7:37and behold, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, and knew that he was sitting at meat in the house of the Pharisee, having taken an alabaster box of myrrh, 7:38and standing at his feet behind [him] weeping, began to wash his feet with tears; and she wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed [them] with the myrrh. 7:39And the Pharisee who had invited him, seeing it, spoke with himself saying, This [person] if he were a prophet would have known who and what the woman is who touches him, for she is a sinner. 7:40And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. And he says, Teacher, say [it]. 7:41There were two debtors of a certain creditor: one owed five hundred denarii and the other fifty; 7:42but as they had nothing to pay, he forgave both of them [their debt]: [say,] which of them therefore will love him most? 7:43And Simon answering said, I suppose he to whom he forgave the most. And he said to him, Thou hast rightly judged. 7:44And turning to the woman he said to Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house; thou gavest me not water on my feet, but *she* has washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with her hair. 7:45Thou gavest me not a kiss, but *she* from the time I came in has not ceased kissing my feet. 7:46My head with oil thou didst not anoint, but *she* has anointed my feet with myrrh. 7:47For which cause I say to thee, Her many sins are forgiven; for she loved much; but he to whom little is forgiven loves little. 7:48And he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven. 7:49And they that were with [them] at table began to say within themselves, Who is this who forgives also sins? 7:50And he said to the woman, Thy faith has saved thee; go in peace.
8:1And it came to pass afterwards that *he* went through [the country] city by city, and village by village, preaching and announcing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God; and the twelve [were] with him, 8:2and certain women who had been healed of wicked spirits and infirmities, Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 8:3and Joanna, wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who ministered to him of their substance. 8:4And a great crowd coming together, and those who were coming to him out of each city, he spoke by parable: 8:5The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the way, and it was trodden under foot, and the birds of the heaven devoured it up; 8:6and other fell upon the rock, and having sprung up, it was dried up because it had not moisture; 8:7and other fell in the midst of the thorns, and the thorns having sprung up with [it] choked it; 8:8and other fell into the good ground, and having sprung up bore fruit a hundredfold. As he said these things he cried, He that has ears to hear, let him hear. 8:9And his disciples asked him [saying], What may this parable be? 8:10And he said, To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest in parables, in order that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. 8:11But the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 8:12But those by the wayside are those who hear; then comes the devil and takes away the word from their heart that they may not believe and be saved. 8:13But those upon the rock, those who when they hear receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a time, and in time of trial fall away. 8:14But that that fell where the thorns were, these are they who having heard go away and are choked under cares and riches and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 8:15But that in the good ground, these are they who in an honest and good heart, having heard the word keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. 8:16And no one having lighted a lamp covers it with a vessel or puts it under a couch, but sets it on a lamp-stand, that they who enter in may see the light. 8:17For there is nothing hid which shall not become manifest, nor secret which shall not be known and come to light. 8:18Take heed therefore how ye hear; for whosoever has, to him shall be given, and whosoever has not, even what he seems to have shall be taken from him. 8:19And his mother and his brethren came to him, and could not get to him because of the crowd. 8:20And it was told him [saying], Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, wishing to see thee. 8:21But he answering said to them, My mother and my brethren are those who hear the word of God and do [it]. 8:22And it came to pass on one of the days, that *he* entered into a ship, himself and his disciples; and he said to them, Let us pass over to the other side of the lake; and they set off from shore. 8:23And as they sailed, he fell asleep; and a sudden squall of wind came down on the lake, and they were filled [with water], and were in danger; 8:24and coming to [him] they woke him up, saying, Master, master, we perish. But he, rising up, rebuked the wind and the raging of the water; and they ceased, and there was a calm. 8:25And he said to them, Where is your faith? And, being afraid, they were astonished, saying to one another, Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him? 8:26And they arrived in the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. 8:27And as he got out [of the ship] on the land, a certain man out of the city met him, who had demons a long time, and put on no clothes, and did not abide in a house, but in the tombs. 8:28But seeing Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus Son of the Most High God? I beseech thee torment me not. 8:29For he had commanded the unclean spirit to go out from the man. For very often it had seized him; and he had been bound, kept with chains and fetters; and breaking the bonds he was driven by the demon into the deserts. 8:30And Jesus asked him saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: for many demons had entered into him. 8:31And they besought him that he would not command them to go away into the bottomless pit. 8:32And there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain, and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into those; and he suffered them. 8:33And the demons, going out from the man, entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the precipice into the lake, and were choked. 8:34But they that fed [them], seeing what had happened, fled, and told [it] to the city and to the country. 8:35And they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting, clothed and sensible, at the feet of Jesus. And they were afraid. 8:36And they also who had seen it told them how the possessed man had been healed. 8:37And all the multitude of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them, for they were possessed with great fear; and *he*, entering into the ship, returned. 8:38But the man out of whom the demons had gone besought him that he might be with him. But he sent him away, saying, 8:39Return to thine house and relate how great things God has done for thee. And he went away through the whole city, publishing how great things Jesus had done for him. 8:40And it came to pass when Jesus returned, the crowd received him gladly, for they were all expecting him. 8:41And behold, a man came, whose name was Jairus, and he was [a] ruler of the synagogue, and falling at the feet of Jesus besought him to come to his house, 8:42because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. And as he went the crowds thronged him. 8:43And a woman who had a flux of blood since twelve years, who, having spent all her living on physicians, could not be cured by any one, 8:44coming up behind, touched the hem of his garment, and immediately her flux of blood stopped. 8:45And Jesus said, Who has touched me? But all denying, Peter and those with him said, Master, the crowds close thee in and press upon thee, and sayest thou, Who has touched me? 8:46And Jesus said, Some one has touched me, for *I* have known that power has gone out from me. 8:47And the woman, seeing that she was not hid, came trembling, and falling down before him declared before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was immediately healed. 8:48And he said to her, [Be of good courage,] daughter; thy faith has healed thee; go in peace. 8:49While he was yet speaking, comes some one from the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher. 8:50But Jesus, hearing it, answered him saying, Fear not: only believe, and she shall be made well. 8:51And when he came to the house he suffered no one to go in but Peter and John and James and the father of the child and the mother. 8:52And all were weeping and lamenting her. But he said, Do not weep, for she has not died, but sleeps. 8:53And they derided him, knowing that she had died. 8:54But *he*, having turned them all out and taking hold of her hand, cried saying, Child, arise. 8:55And her spirit returned, and immediately she rose up; and he commanded [something] to eat to be given to her. 8:56And her parents were amazed; but he enjoined them to tell no one what had happened.
9:1And having called together the twelve, he gave them power and authority over all demons, and to heal diseases, 9:2and sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 9:3And he said to them, Take nothing for the way, neither staff, nor scrip, nor bread, nor money; nor to have two body-coats apiece. 9:4And into whatsoever house ye enter, there abide and thence go forth. 9:5And as many as may not receive you, going forth from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a witness against them. 9:6And going forth they passed through the villages, announcing the glad tidings and healing everywhere. 9:7And Herod the tetrarch heard of all the things which were done [by him], and was in perplexity, because it was said by some that John was risen from among [the] dead, 9:8and by some that Elias had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again. 9:9And Herod said, John *I* have beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things? and he sought to see him. 9:10And the apostles having returned related to him whatever they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart into [a desert place of] a city called Bethsaida. 9:11But the crowds knowing [it] followed him; and he received them and spake to them of the kingdom of God, and cured those that had need of healing. 9:12But the day began to decline, and the twelve came and said to him, Send away the crowd that they may go into the villages around, and [into] the fields, and lodge and find victuals, for here we are in a desert place. 9:13And he said to them, Give *ye them to eat. And they said, We have not more than five loaves and two fishes, unless *we* should go and buy food for all this people; 9:14for they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down in companies by fifties. 9:15And they did so, and made them all sit down. 9:16And taking the five loaves and the two fishes, looking up to heaven he blessed them, and broke and gave to the disciples to set before the crowd. 9:17And they all ate and were filled; and there was taken up of what had remained over and above to them in fragments twelve hand-baskets. 9:18And it came to pass as he was praying alone, his disciples were with him, and he asked them saying, Who do the crowds say that I am? 9:19But they answering said, John the baptist; but others, Elias; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen again. 9:20And he said to them, But *ye*, who do ye say that I am? And Peter answering said, The Christ of God. 9:21But, earnestly charging them, he enjoined [them] to say this to no man, 9:22saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up. 9:23And he said to [them] all, If any one will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me; 9:24for whosoever shall desire to save his life shall lose it, but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, *he* shall save it. 9:25For what shall a man profit if he shall have gained the whole world, and have destroyed, or come under the penalty of the loss of himself? 9:26For whosoever shall have been ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he shall come in his glory, and [in that] of the Father, and of the holy angels. 9:27But I say unto you of a truth, There are some of those standing here who shall not taste death until they shall have seen the kingdom of God. 9:28And it came to pass after these words, about eight days, that taking Peter and John and James he went up into a mountain to pray. 9:29And as he prayed the fashion of his countenance became different and his raiment white [and] effulgent. 9:30And lo, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elias, 9:31who, appearing in glory, spoke of his departure which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem. 9:32But Peter and those with him were oppressed with sleep: but having fully awoke up they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him. 9:33And it came to pass as they departed from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. 9:34But as he was saying these things, there came a cloud and overshadowed them, and they feared as they entered into the cloud: 9:35and there was a voice out of the cloud saying, *This* is my beloved Son: hear him. 9:36And as the voice was [heard] Jesus was found alone: and *they* kept silence, and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen. 9:37And it came to pass on the following day, when they came down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 9:38And lo, a man from the crowd cried out saying, Teacher, I beseech thee look upon my son, for he is mine only child: 9:39and behold, a spirit takes him, and suddenly he cries out, and it tears him with foaming, and with difficulty departs from him after crushing him. 9:40And I besought thy disciples that they might cast him out, and they could not. 9:41And Jesus answering said, O unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and suffer you? Bring hither thy son. 9:42But as he was yet coming, the demon tore him and dragged him all together. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child and gave him back to his father. 9:43And all were astonished at the glorious greatness of God. And as all wondered at all the things which [Jesus] did, he said to his disciples, 9:44Do *ye* let these words sink into your ears. For the Son of man is about to be delivered into men's hands. 9:45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them that they should not perceive it. And they feared to ask him concerning this saying. 9:46And a reasoning came in amongst them, who should be [the] greatest of them. 9:47And Jesus, seeing the reasoning of their heart, having taken a little child set it by him, 9:48and said to them, Whosoever shall receive this little child in my name receives me, and whosoever shall receive me receives him that sent me. For he who is the least among you all, *he* is great. 9:49And John answering said, Master, we saw some one casting out demons in thy name, and we forbad him, because he follows not with us. 9:50And Jesus said to him, Forbid [him] not, for he that is not against you is for you. 9:51And it came to pass when the days of his receiving up were fulfilled, that *he* stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem. 9:52And he sent messengers before his face. And having gone they entered into a village of the Samaritans that they might make ready for him. 9:53And they did not receive him, because his face was [turned as] going to Jerusalem. 9:54And his disciples James and John seeing [it] said, Lord, wilt thou that we speak [that] fire come down from heaven and consume them, as also Elias did? 9:55But turning he rebuked them [and said, Ye know not of what spirit ye are]. 9:56And they went to another village. 9:57And it came to pass as they went in the way, one said to him, I will follow thee wheresoever thou goest, Lord. 9:58And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes and the birds of the heaven roosting-places, but the Son of man has not where he may lay his head. 9:59And he said to another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, allow me to go first and bury my father. 9:60But Jesus said to him, Suffer the dead to bury their own dead, but do *thou* go and announce the kingdom of God. 9:61And another also said, I will follow thee, Lord, but first allow me to bid adieu to those at my house. 9:62But Jesus said to him, No one having laid his hand on [the] plough and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.
10:1Now after these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place where he himself was about to come. 10:2And he said to them, The harvest indeed [is] great, but the workmen few; supplicate therefore the Lord of the harvest that he may send out workmen into his harvest. 10:3Go: behold *I* send you forth as lambs in the midst of wolves. 10:4Carry neither purse nor scrip nor sandals, and salute no one on the way. 10:5And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace to this house. 10:6And if a son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it; but if not it shall turn to you again. 10:7And in the same house abide, eating and drinking such things as they have; for the workman is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house. 10:8And into whatsoever city ye may enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you, 10:9and heal the sick in it, and say to them, The kingdom of God is come nigh to you. 10:10But into whatsoever city ye may have entered and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 10:11Even the dust of your city, which cleaves to us on the feet, do we shake off against you; but know this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh. 10:12I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for Sodom in that day than for that city. 10:13Woe to thee, Chorazin! woe to thee, Bethsaida! for if the works of power which have taken place in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they had long ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 10:14But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. 10:15And *thou*, Capernaum, who hast been raised up to heaven, shalt be brought down even to hades. 10:16He that hears you hears me; and he that rejects you rejects me; and he that rejects me rejects him that sent me. 10:17And the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us through thy name. 10:18And he said to them, I beheld Satan as lightning falling out of heaven. 10:19Behold, I give you the power of treading upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall in anywise injure you. 10:20Yet in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subjected to you, but rejoice that your names are written in the heavens. 10:21In the same hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit and said, I praise thee, Father, Lord of the heaven and of the earth, that thou hast hid these things from wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to babes: yea, Father, for thus has it been well-pleasing in thy sight. 10:22All things have been delivered to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is but the Father, and who the Father is but the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son is pleased to reveal [him]. 10:23And having turned to the disciples privately he said, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see. 10:24For I say to you that many prophets and kings have desired to see the things which ye behold, and did not see [them]; and to hear the things which ye hear, and did not hear [them]. 10:25And behold, a certain lawyer stood up tempting him, and saying, Teacher, having done what, shall I inherit life eternal? 10:26And he said to him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? 10:27But he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thine understanding; and thy neighbour as thyself. 10:28And he said to him, Thou hast answered right: this do and thou shalt live. 10:29But he, desirous of justifying himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbour? 10:30And Jesus replying said, A certain man descended from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into [the hands of] robbers, who also, having stripped him and inflicted wounds, went away leaving him in a half-dead state. 10:31And a certain priest happened to go down that way, and seeing him, passed on on the opposite side; 10:32and in like manner also a Levite, being at the spot, came and looked [at him] and passed on on the opposite side. 10:33But a certain Samaritan journeying came to him, and seeing [him], was moved with compassion, 10:34and came up [to him] and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine; and having put him on his own beast, took him to [the] inn and took care of him. 10:35And on the morrow [as he left], taking out two denarii he gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, Take care of him, and whatsoever thou shalt expend more, *I* will render to thee on my coming back. 10:36Which [now] of these three seems to thee to have been neighbour of him who fell into [the hands of] the robbers? 10:37And he said, He that shewed him mercy. And Jesus said to him, Go, and do *thou* likewise. 10:38And it came to pass as they went that *he* entered into a certain village; and a certain woman, Martha by name, received him into her house. 10:39And she had a sister called Mary, who also, having sat down at the feet of Jesus was listening to his word. 10:40Now Martha was distracted with much serving, and coming up she said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Speak to her therefore that she may help me. 10:41But Jesus answering said to her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things; 10:42but there is need of one, and Mary has chosen the good part, the which shall not be taken from her.
