9:1The burden of the word of Jehovah, in the land of Hadrach, and [on] Damascus shall it rest; (for Jehovah hath an eye upon men, and upon all the tribes of Israel;) 9:2and also [on] Hamath [which] bordereth thereon; on Tyre and Zidon, though she be very wise. 9:3And Tyre hath built herself a stronghold, and hath heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets. 9:4Behold, the Lord will take possession of her, and he will smite her power in the sea; and she shall be devoured with fire. 9:5Ashkelon shall see [it], and fear; Gazah also, and she shall be greatly pained; Ekron also, for her expectation shall be put to shame: and the king shall perish from Gazah, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited. 9:6And a bastard shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines; 9:7and I will take away his blood out of his mouth, and his abominations from between his teeth; but he that remaineth, he also shall belong to our God, and shall be as a leader in Judah, and Ekron as a Jebusite. 9:8And I will encamp about my house because of the army, because of those that pass by and that return; and the exactor shall not pass through them any more: for now have I seen [it] with mine eyes. 9:9Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion; shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, thy King cometh to thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly and rIding upon an ass, even upon a colt the foal of an ass. 9:10And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; and the battle-bow shall be cut off. And he shall speak peace unto the nations; and his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth. 9:11As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant, I will send forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water. 9:12Turn again to the stronghold, prisoners of hope! even to-day do I declare I will render double unto thee. 9:13For I have bent Judah for me, I have filled the bow with Ephraim; and I will raise up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and make thee like the sword of a mighty man. 9:14And Jehovah shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning; and the Lord Jehovah will blow the trumpet, and will march with whirlwinds of the south. 9:15Jehovah of hosts will defend them; and they shall devour, and shall tread down the sling-stones; and they shall drink, [and] make a noise as from wine; and they shall be filled like a bowl, like the corners of the altar. 9:16And Jehovah their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people; for [they shall be as] the stones of a crown, lifted up upon his land. 9:17For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! Corn shall make the young men flourish, and new wine the maidens.
10:1Ask of Jehovah rain in the time of the latter rain; Jehovah will make lightnings, and he will give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field. 10:2For the teraphim have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams: they comfort in vain. Therefore they have gone away as a flock, they are in distress, because there is no shepherd. 10:3Mine anger is kindled against the shepherds, and I will punish the he-goats; for Jehovah of hosts visiteth his flock, the house of Judah, and maketh them as his majestic horse in the battle. 10:4From him shall come forth the corner-stone, from him the nail, from him the battle bow, from him every exactor together. 10:5And they shall be as mighty men, treading down the mire of the streets in the battle; and they shall fight, for Jehovah is with them, and the riders on horses shall be put to shame. 10:6And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them back again; for I will have mercy upon them; and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am Jehovah their God, and I will answer them. 10:7And [they of] Ephraim shall be like a mighty man, and their hearts shall rejoice as through wine; and their children shall see [it], and rejoice; their heart shall be joyful in Jehovah. 10:8I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall multiply as they used to multiply. 10:9And I will sow them among the peoples, and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children and return. 10:10And I will bring them again out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and [place] shall not be found for them. 10:11And he shall pass through the sea of affliction, and shall smite the billows in the sea, and all the depths of the Nile shall dry up; and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away. 10:12And I will strengthen them in Jehovah; and they shall walk in his name, saith Jehovah.
11:1Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy cedars. 11:2Howl, cypress, for the cedar is fallen; because the noble ones are spoiled. Howl, ye oaks of Bashan; for the strong forest is come down. 11:3A voice of howling of the shepherds; for their glory is spoiled: a voice of roaring of young lions; for the pride of Jordan is spoiled. 11:4Thus saith Jehovah my God: Feed the flock of slaughter, 11:5whose possessors slay them without being held guilty; and they that sell them say, Blessed be Jehovah! for I am become rich; and their own shepherds pity them not. 11:6For I will no more pity the inhabitants of the land, saith Jehovah, and behold, I will deliver men, every one into his neighbour's hand, and into the hand of his king; and they shall smite the land, and I will not deliver out of their hand. 11:7So I fed the flock of slaughter, truly the poor of the flock. And I took unto me two staves; the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock. 11:8And I destroyed three shepherds in one month; and my soul was vexed with them, and their soul also loathed me. 11:9And I said, I will not feed you: that which dieth, let it die; and that which perisheth let it perish; and let them which are left eat every one the flesh of another. 11:10And I took my staff, Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the peoples. 11:11And it was broken in that day; and so the poor of the flock that gave heed to me knew that it was the word of Jehovah. 11:12And I said unto them, If ye think good, give [me] my hire; and if not, forbear. And they weighed for my hire thirty silver-pieces. 11:13And Jehovah said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prized at by them. And I took the thirty silver-pieces, and cast them to the potter in the house of Jehovah. 11:14And I cut asunder mine other staff, Bands, to break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. 11:15And Jehovah said unto me, Take unto thee yet the instruments of a foolish shepherd. 11:16For behold, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, who shall not visit those that are about to perish, neither shall seek that which is strayed away, nor heal that which is wounded, nor feed that which is sound; but he will eat the flesh of the fat, and tear their hoofs in pieces. 11:17Woe to the worthless shepherd that leaveth the flock! The sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye; his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye utterly darkened.
12:1The burden of the word of Jehovah concerning Israel. [Thus] saith Jehovah, who stretcheth out the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him: 12:2Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of bewilderment unto all the peoples round about, and also against Judah shall it be in the siege against Jerusalem. 12:3And it shall come to pass in that day [that] I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone unto all peoples: all that burden themselves with it shall certainly be wounded, and all the nations of the earth shall be assembled together against it. 12:4In that day, saith Jehovah, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness; but I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the peoples with blindness. 12:5And the leaders of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength through Jehovah of hosts their God. 12:6In that day will I make the leaders of Judah like a hearth of fire among wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the peoples round about, on the right hand and on the left; and Jerusalem shall dwell again in her own place, in Jerusalem. 12:7And Jehovah shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem be not magnified over Judah. 12:8In that day will Jehovah defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that stumbleth among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David as God, as the Angel of Jehovah before them. 12:9And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. 12:10And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and of supplications; and they shall look on me whom they pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for an only [son], and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for [his] firstborn. 12:11In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadad-rimmon in the valley of Megiddon. 12:12And the land shall mourn, every family apart: the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; 12:13the family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart; 12:14all the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.
13:1In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. 13:2And it shall come to pass in that day, saith Jehovah of hosts, [that] I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered; and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land. 13:3And it shall come to pass, if any shall yet prophesy, that his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of Jehovah; and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth. 13:4And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he prophesieth; neither shall they wear a hairy mantle to deceive. 13:5And he shall say, I am no prophet, I am a tiller of the ground; for man acquired me [as bondman] from my youth. 13:6And one shall say unto him, What are those wounds in thy hands? And he will say, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. 13:7Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, even against the man [that is] my fellow, saith Jehovah of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered, and I will turn my hand upon the little ones. 13:8And it shall come to pass in all the land, saith Jehovah, two parts therein shall be cut off [and] die; but the third shall be left therein. 13:9And I will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried. They shall call on my name, and I will answer them: I will say, It is my people; and they shall say, Jehovah is my God.
14:1Behold, the day cometh for Jehovah, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. 14:2And I will assemble all the nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity; and the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 14:3And Jehovah will go forth and fight with those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. 14:4And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem toward the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. 14:5And ye shall flee [by] the valley of my mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: ye shall even flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. And Jehovah my God shall come, [and] all the holy ones with thee. 14:6And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] there shall not be light; the shining shall be obscured. 14:7And it shall be one day which is known to Jehovah, not day, and not night; and it shall come to pass, at eventide it shall be light. 14:8And it shall come to pass in that day [that] living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the eastern sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. 14:9And Jehovah shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Jehovah, and his name one. 14:10All the land from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem shall be turned as the Arabah; and [Jerusalem] shall be lifted up, and shall dwell in her own place, from Benjamin's gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner-gate, and from the tower of Hananeel unto the king's winepresses. 14:11And [men] shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; and Jerusalem shall dwell safely. 14:12And this shall be the plague wherewith Jehovah will smite all the peoples that have warred against Jerusalem: their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. 14:13And it shall come to pass in that day [that] a great panic from Jehovah shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour. 14:14And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the nations round about shall be gathered together gold, and silver, and garments, in great abundance. 14:15And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in those camps, as this plague. 14:16And it shall come to pass, that all that are left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, Jehovah of hosts, and to celebrate the feast of tabernacles. 14:17And it shall be, that whoso goeth not up of the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, Jehovah of hosts, upon them shall be no rain. 14:18And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, neither [shall it be] upon them; [there] shall be the plague, wherewith Jehovah will smite the nations that go not up to celebrate the feast of tabernacles. 14:19This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all the nations that go not up to celebrate the feast of tabernacles. 14:20In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO JEHOVAH; and the pots in Jehovah's house shall be like the bowls before the altar. 14:21And every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto Jehovah of hosts; and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein. And in that day there shall be no more a Canaanite in the house of Jehovah of hosts.
Malachi
1:1The burden of the word of Jehovah to Israel by Malachi. 1:2I have loved you, saith Jehovah; but ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith Jehovah, and I loved Jacob, 1:3and I hated Esau; and made his mountains a desolation, and [gave] his inheritance to the jackals of the wilderness. 1:4If Edom say, We are broken down, but we will build again the ruined places, thus saith Jehovah of hosts: They shall build, but I will throw down; and [men] shall call them the territory of wickedness, and the people against whom Jehovah hath indignation for ever. 1:5And your eyes shall see [it], and ye shall say, Jehovah is magnified beyond the border of Israel. 1:6A son honoureth [his] father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith Jehovah of hosts unto you, priests, that despise my name. But ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? 1:7Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of Jehovah is contemptible. 1:8And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? And if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? Present it now unto thy governor: will he be pleased with thee? or will he accept thy person? saith Jehovah of hosts. 1:9And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us. This hath been of your hand: will he accept any of your persons? saith Jehovah of hosts. 1:10Who is there among you that would even shut the doors? and ye would not kindle [fire] on mine altar for nothing. I have no delight in you, saith Jehovah of hosts, neither will I accept an oblation at your hand. 1:11For from the rising of the sun even unto its setting my name shall be great among the nations; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure oblation: for my name shall be great among the nations, saith Jehovah of hosts. 1:12But ye profane it, in that ye say, The table of the Lord is polluted; and the fruit thereof, his food, is contemptible. 1:13And ye say, Behold, what a weariness! And ye have puffed at it, saith Jehovah of hosts, and ye bring [that which was] torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye bring the oblation: should I accept this of your hand? saith Jehovah. 1:14Yea, cursed be the deceiver, who hath in his flock a male, and voweth and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing; for I am a great King, saith Jehovah of hosts, and my name is terrible among the nations.
2:1And now, ye priests, this commandment is for you. 2:2If ye do not hear, and if ye do not lay [it] to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith Jehovah of hosts, I will even send the curse among you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have already cursed them, because ye do not lay [it] to heart. 2:3Behold, I will rebuke your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, the dung of your feasts; and they shall take you away with it. 2:4And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith Jehovah of hosts. 2:5My covenant with him was of life and peace, and I gave them to him that he might fear; and he feared me, and trembled before my name. 2:6The law of truth was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity. 2:7For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and at his mouth they seek the law; for he is the messenger of Jehovah of hosts. 2:8But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith Jehovah of hosts. 2:9And I also have made you contemptible and base before all the people, because ye have not kept my ways, but have respect of persons in [administering] the law. 2:10Have we not all one father? Hath not one God created us? Why do we deal unfaithfully every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers? 2:11Judah hath dealt unfaithfully, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the sanctuary of Jehovah which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange God. 2:12Jehovah will cut off from the tents of Jacob the man that doeth this, him that calleth and him that answereth; and him that offereth an oblation unto Jehovah of hosts. 2:13And further ye do this: ye cover the altar of Jehovah with tears, with weeping, and with sighing, insomuch that he regardeth not the oblation any more, nor receiveth [it] with satisfaction at your hand. 2:14Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because Jehovah hath been a witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt unfaithfully: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. 2:15And did not one make [them]? and the remnant of the Spirit was his. And wherefore the one? He sought a seed of God. Take heed then to your spirit, and let none deal unfaithfully against the wife of his youth, 2:16(for I hate putting away, saith Jehovah the God of Israel;) and he covereth with violence his garment, saith Jehovah of hosts: take heed then to your spirit, that ye deal not unfaithfully. 2:17Ye have wearied Jehovah with your words, and ye say, Wherein have we wearied [him]? In that ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of Jehovah, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?
3:1Behold, I send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me; and the Lord whom ye seek will suddenly come to his temple, and the Angel of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he cometh, saith Jehovah of hosts. 3:2But who shall endure the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? For he will be like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' lye. 3:3And he shall sit [as] a refiner and purifier of silver; and he will purify the children of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver; and they shall offer unto Jehovah an oblation in righteousness. 3:4Then shall the oblation of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto Jehovah, as in the days of old, and as in former years. 3:5And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the false swearers, and against those that oppress the hired servant in [his] wages, the widow and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger [from his right], and fear not me, saith Jehovah of hosts. 3:6For I Jehovah change not, and ye, sons of Jacob, are not consumed. 3:7Since the days of your fathers have ye departed from my statutes, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith Jehovah of hosts. But ye say, Wherein shall we return? 3:8Will a man rob God? But ye rob me. And ye say, Wherein do we rob thee? [In] tithes and heave-offerings. 3:9Ye are cursed with a curse; and me ye rob, [even] this whole nation. 3:10Bring the whole tithe into the treasure-house, that there may be food in my house, and prove me now herewith, saith Jehovah of hosts, if I open not to you the windows of the heavens, and pour you out a blessing, till there be no place for it. 3:11And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast its fruit before the time in the field, saith Jehovah of hosts. 3:12And all nations shall call you blessed; for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith Jehovah of hosts. 3:13Your words have been stout against me, saith Jehovah; but ye say, What have we been speaking against thee? 3:14Ye say, It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we keep his charge, and that we walk mournfully before Jehovah of hosts? 3:15And now we hold the proud for happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they tempt God, and they escape. 3:16Then they that feared Jehovah spoke often one to another; and Jehovah observed [it], and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared Jehovah, and that thought upon his name. 3:17And they shall be unto me a peculiar treasure, saith Jehovah of hosts, in the day that I prepare; and I will spare them as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. 3:18And ye shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
4:1For behold, the day cometh, burning as a furnace; and all the proud and all that work wickedness shall be stubble; and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith Jehovah of hosts, so that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. 4:2And unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth and leap like fatted calves. 4:3And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I prepare, saith Jehovah of hosts. 4:4Remember the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, the statutes and ordinances. 4:5Behold, I send unto you Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and terrible day of Jehovah. 4:6And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

2:1Now Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, behold magi from the east arrived at Jerusalem, saying, 2:2Where is the king of the Jews that has been born? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to do him homage. 2:3But Herod the king having heard [of it], was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 2:4and, assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born. 2:5And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for thus it is written through the prophet: 2:6And *thou* Bethlehem, land of Juda, art in no wise the least among the governors of Juda; for out of thee shall go forth a leader who shall shepherd my people Israel. 2:7Then Herod, having secretly called the magi, inquired of them accurately the time of the star that was appearing; 2:8and having sent them to Bethlehem, said, Go, search out accurately concerning the child, and when ye shall have found [him] bring me back word, so that *I* also may come and do him homage. 2:9And they having heard the king went their way; and lo, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it came and stood over the place where the little child was. 2:10And when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 2:11And having come into the house they saw the little child with Mary his mother, and falling down did him homage. And having opened their treasures, they offered to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 2:12And being divinely instructed in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. 2:13Now, they having departed, behold, an angel of [the] Lord appears in a dream to Joseph, saying, Arise, take to [thee] the little child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I shall tell thee; for Herod will seek the little child to destroy it. 2:14And, having arisen, he took to [him] the little child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt. 2:15And he was there until the death of Herod, that that might be fulfilled which was spoken by [the] Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. 2:16Then Herod, seeing that he had been mocked by the magi, was greatly enraged; and sent and slew all the boys which [were] in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time which he had accurately inquired from the magi. 2:17Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying, 2:18A voice has been heard in Rama, weeping, and great lamentation: Rachel weeping [for] her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. 2:19But Herod having died, behold, an angel of [the] Lord appears in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, 2:20Arise, take to [thee] the little child and its mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they who sought the life of the little child are dead. 2:21And he arose and took to [him] the little child and its mother, and came into the land of Israel; 2:22but having heard that 'Archelaus reigns over Judaea, instead of Herod his father,' he was afraid to go there; and having been divinely instructed in a dream, he went away into the parts of Galilee, 2:23and came and dwelt in a town called Nazareth; so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, He shall be called a Nazaraean.
3:1Now in those days comes John the baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 3:2and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh. 3:3For this is he who has been spoken of through Esaias the prophet, saying, Voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: prepare ye the way of [the] Lord, make straight his paths. 3:4And John himself had his garment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and wild honey. 3:5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the country round the Jordan, 3:6and were baptised by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. 3:7But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath? 3:8Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance. 3:9And do not think to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father; for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 3:10And already the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. 3:11*I* indeed baptise you with water to repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not fit to bear; *he* shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire; 3:12whose winnowing fan [is] in his hand, and he shall thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and shall gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. 3:13Then comes Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptised of him; 3:14but John urgently forbad him, saying, *I* have need to be baptised of thee; and comest *thou* to me? 3:15But Jesus answering said to him, Suffer [it] now; for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffers him. 3:16And Jesus, having been baptised, went up straightway from the water, and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him: 3:17and behold, a voice out of the heavens saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I have found my delight.
4:1Then Jesus was carried up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted of the devil: 4:2and having fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he hungered. 4:3And the tempter coming up to him said, If thou be Son of God, speak, that these stones may become loaves of bread. 4:4But he answering said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word which goes out through God's mouth. 4:5Then the devil takes him to the holy city, and sets him upon the edge of the temple, 4:6and says to him, If thou be Son of God cast thyself down; for it is written, He shall give charge to his angels concerning thee, and on [their] hands shall they bear thee, lest in anywise thou strike thy foot against a stone. 4:7Jesus said to him, It is again written, Thou shalt not tempt [the] Lord thy God. 4:8Again the devil takes him to a very high mountain, and shews him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory, 4:9and says to him, All these things will I give thee if, falling down, thou wilt do me homage. 4:10Then says Jesus to him, Get thee away, Satan, for it is written, Thou shalt do homage to [the] Lord thy God, and him alone shalt thou serve. 4:11Then the devil leaves him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him. 4:12But having heard that John was delivered up, he departed into Galilee: 4:13and having left Nazareth, he went and dwelt at Capernaum, which is on the sea-side in the borders of Zabulon and Nepthalim, 4:14that that might be fulfilled which was spoken through Esaias the prophet, saying, 4:15Land of Zabulon and land of Nepthalim, way of [the] sea beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations: 4:16the people sitting in darkness has seen a great light, and to those sitting in [the] country and shadow of death, to them has light sprung up. 4:17From that time began Jesus to preach and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh. 4:18And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers; 4:19and he says to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. 4:20And they, having left their trawl-nets, immediately followed him. 4:21And going on thence he saw other two brothers, James the [son] of Zebedee and John his brother, in the ship with Zebedee their father, mending their trawl-nets, and he called them; 4:22and they, having left the ship and their father, immediately followed him. 4:23And [Jesus] went round the whole [of] Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the glad tidings of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every bodily weakness among the people. 4:24And his fame went out into the whole [of] Syria, and they brought to him all that were ill, suffering under various diseases and pains, and those possessed by demons, and lunatics, and paralytics; and he healed them. 4:25And great crowds followed him from Galilee, and Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judaea, and beyond the Jordan.
5:1But seeing the crowds, he went up into the mountain, and having sat down, his disciples came to him; 5:2and, having opened his mouth, he taught them, saying, 5:3Blessed [are] the poor in spirit, for *theirs* is the kingdom of the heavens. 5:4Blessed they that mourn, for *they* shall be comforted. 5:5Blessed the meek, for *they* shall inherit the earth. 5:6Blessed they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for *they* shall be filled. 5:7Blessed the merciful, for *they* shall find mercy. 5:8Blessed the pure in heart, for *they* shall see God. 5:9Blessed the peace-makers, for *they* shall be called sons of God. 5:10Blessed they who are persecuted on account of righteousness, for *theirs* is the kingdom of the heavens. 5:11Blessed are ye when they may reproach and persecute you, and say every wicked thing against you, lying, for my sake. 5:12Rejoice and exult, for your reward is great in the heavens; for thus have they persecuted the prophets who were before you. 5:13*Ye* are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have become insipid, wherewith shall it be salted? It is no longer fit for anything but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot by men. 5:14*Ye* are the light of the world: a city situated on the top of a mountain cannot be hid. 5:15Nor do [men] light a lamp and put it under the bushel, but upon the lamp-stand, and it shines for all who are in the house. 5:16Let your light thus shine before men, so that they may see your upright works, and glorify your Father who is in the heavens. 5:17Think not that I am come to make void the law or the prophets; I am not come to make void, but to fulfil. 5:18For verily I say unto you, Until the heaven and the earth pass away, one iota or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all come to pass. 5:19Whosoever then shall do away with one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whosoever shall practise and teach [them], *he* shall be called great in the kingdom of the heavens. 5:20For I say unto you, that unless your righteousness surpass [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of the heavens. 5:21Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill; but whosoever shall kill shall be subject to the judgment. 5:22But *I* say unto you, that every one that is lightly angry with his brother shall be subject to the judgment; but whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be subject to [be called before] the sanhedrim; but whosoever shall say, Fool, shall be subject to the penalty of the hell of fire. 5:23If therefore thou shouldest offer thy gift at the altar, and there shouldest remember that thy brother has something against thee, 5:24leave there thy gift before the altar, and first go, be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. 5:25Make friends with thine adverse party quickly, whilst thou art in the way with him; lest some time the adverse party deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 5:26Verily I say to thee, Thou shalt in no wise come out thence till thou hast paid the last farthing. 5:27Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery. 5:28But *I* say unto you, that every one who looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 5:29But if thy right eye be a snare to thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. 5:30And if thy right hand be a snare to thee, cut it off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. 5:31It has been said too, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a letter of divorce. 5:32But *I* say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except for cause of fornication, makes her commit adultery, and whosoever marries one that is put away commits adultery. 5:33Again, ye have heard that it has been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt render to the Lord what thou hast sworn. 5:34But *I* say unto you, Do not swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is [the] throne of God; 5:35nor by the earth, because it is [the] footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is [the] city of the great King. 5:36Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 5:37But let your word be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; but what is more than these is from evil. 5:38Ye have heard that it has been said, Eye for eye and tooth for tooth. 5:39But *I* say unto you, not to resist evil; but whoever shall strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other; 5:40and to him that would go to law with thee and take thy body coat, leave him thy cloak also. 5:41And whoever will compel thee to go one mile, go with him two. 5:42To him that asks of thee give, and from him that desires to borrow of thee turn not away. 5:43Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy. 5:44But *I* say unto you, Love your enemies, [bless those who curse you,] do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who [insult you and] persecute you, 5:45that ye may be [the] sons of your Father who is in [the] heavens; for he makes his sun rise on evil and good, and sends rain on just and unjust. 5:46For if ye should love those who love you, what reward have ye? Do not also the tax-gatherers the same? 5:47And if ye should salute your brethren only, what do ye extraordinary? Do not also the Gentiles the same? 5:48Be *ye* therefore perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.
6:1Take heed not to do your alms before men to be seen of them, otherwise ye have no reward with your Father who is in the heavens. 6:2When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6:3But thou, when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand does; 6:4so that thine alms may be in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render [it] to thee. 6:5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets so that they should appear to men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6:6But *thou*, when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who sees in secret will render [it] to thee. 6:7But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as those who are of the nations: for they think they shall be heard through their much speaking. 6:8Be not ye therefore like them, for your Father knows of what things ye have need before ye beg [anything] of him. 6:9Thus therefore pray *ye*: Our Father who art in the heavens, let thy name be sanctified, 6:10let thy kingdom come, let thy will be done as in heaven so upon the earth; 6:11give us to-day our needed bread, 6:12and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors, 6:13and lead us not into temptation, but save us from evil. 6:14For if ye forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father also will forgive you [yours], 6:15but if ye do not forgive men their offences, neither will your Father forgive your offences. 6:16And when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, downcast in countenance; for they disfigure their faces, so that they may appear fasting to men: verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6:17But *thou*, [when] fasting, anoint thy head and wash thy face, 6:18so that thou mayest not appear fasting unto men, but to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret shall render [it] to thee. 6:19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust spoils, and where thieves dig through and steal; 6:20but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust spoils, and where thieves do not dig through nor steal; 6:21for where thy treasure is, there will be also thy heart. 6:22The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body will be light: 6:23but if thine eye be wicked, thy whole body will be dark. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great the darkness! 6:24No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and will love the other, or he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 6:25For this cause I say unto you, Do not be careful about your life, what ye should eat and what ye should drink; nor for your body what ye should put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment? 6:26Look at the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, nor reap, nor gather into granaries, and your heavenly Father nourishes them. Are *ye* not much more excellent than they? 6:27But which of you by carefulness can add to his growth one cubit? 6:28And why are ye careful about clothing? Observe with attention the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; 6:29but I say unto you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed as one of these. 6:30But if God so clothe the herbage of the field, which is to-day, and to-morrow is cast into [the] oven, will he not much rather you, O [ye] of little faith? 6:31Be not therefore careful, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we put on? 6:32for all these things the nations seek after; for your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things. 6:33But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. 6:34Be not careful therefore for the morrow, for the morrow shall be careful about itself. Sufficient to the day [is] its own evil.
7:1Judge not, that ye may not be judged; 7:2for with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you. 7:3But why lookest thou on the mote that is in the eye of thy brother, but observest not the beam that is in thine eye? 7:4Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Allow [me], I will cast out the mote from thine eye; and behold, the beam is in thine eye? 7:5Hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine eye, and then thou wilt see clearly to cast out the mote out of the eye of thy brother. 7:6Give not that which is holy to the dogs, nor cast your pearls before the swine, lest they trample them with their feet, and turning round rend you. 7:7Ask, and it shall be given to you. Seek, and ye shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened to you. 7:8For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened. 7:9Or what man is there of you who, if his son shall ask of him a loaf of bread, will give him a stone; 7:10and if he ask a fish, will give him a serpent? 7:11If therefore *ye*, being wicked, know [how] to give good gifts to your children, how much rather shall your Father who is in the heavens give good things to them that ask of him? 7:12Therefore all things whatever ye desire that men should do to you, thus do *ye* also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets. 7:13Enter in through the narrow gate, for wide the gate and broad the way that leads to destruction, and many are they who enter in through it. 7:14For narrow the gate and straitened the way that leads to life, and they are few who find it. 7:15But beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but within are ravening wolves. 7:16By their fruits ye shall know them. Do [men] gather a bunch of grapes from thorns, or from thistles figs? 7:17So every good tree produces good fruits, but the worthless tree produces bad fruits. 7:18A good tree cannot produce bad fruits, nor a worthless tree produce good fruits. 7:19Every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. 7:20By their fruits then surely ye shall know them. 7:21Not every one who says to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but he that does the will of my Father who is in the heavens. 7:22Many shall say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied through *thy* name, and through *thy* name cast out demons, and through *thy* name done many works of power? 7:23and then will I avow unto them, I never knew you. Depart from me, workers of lawlessness. 7:24Whoever therefore hears these my words and does them, I will liken him to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock; 7:25and the rain came down, and the streams came, and the winds blew and fell upon that house, and it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock. 7:26And every one who hears these my words and does not do them, he shall be likened to a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand; 7:27and the rain came down, and the streams came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, and it fell, and its fall was great. 7:28And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were astonished at his doctrine, 7:29for he taught them as having authority, and not as their scribes.
8:1And when he had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. 8:2And behold, a leper came up to [him] and did him homage, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou art able to cleanse me. 8:3And he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I will; be cleansed. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 8:4And Jesus says to him, See thou tell no man, but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift which Moses ordained, for a testimony to them. 8:5And when he had entered into Capernaum, a centurion came to him, beseeching him, 8:6and saying, Lord, my servant lies paralytic in the house, suffering grievously. 8:7And Jesus says to him, *I* will come and heal him. 8:8And the centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not fit that thou shouldest enter under my roof; but only speak a word, and my servant shall be healed. 8:9For *I* also am a man under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say to this [one], Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my bondman, Do this, and he does it. 8:10And when Jesus heard it, he wondered, and said to those who followed, Verily I say unto you, Not even in Israel have I found so great faith. 8:11But I say unto you, that many shall come from [the] rising and setting [sun], and shall lie down at table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens; 8:12but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. 8:13And Jesus said to the centurion, Go, and as thou hast believed, be it to thee. And his servant was healed in that hour. 8:14And when Jesus had come to Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law laid down and in a fever; 8:15and he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she arose and served him. 8:16And when the evening was come, they brought to him many possessed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all that were ill; 8:17so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities and bore our diseases. 8:18And Jesus, seeing great crowds around him, commanded to depart to the other side. 8:19And a scribe came up and said to him, Teacher, I will follow thee whithersoever thou mayest go. 8:20And Jesus says to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven roosting-places; but the Son of man has not where he may lay his head. 8:21But another of his disciples said to him, Lord, suffer me first to go away and bury my father. 8:22But Jesus said to him, Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead. 8:23And he went on board ship and his disciples followed him; 8:24and behold, [the water] became very agitated on the sea, so that the ship was covered by the waves; but *he* slept. 8:25And the disciples came and awoke him, saying, Lord save: we perish. 8:26And he says to them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then, having arisen, he rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 8:27But the men were astonished, saying, What sort [of man] is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him? 8:28And there met him, when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, two possessed by demons, coming out of the tombs, exceeding dangerous, so that no one was able to pass by that way. 8:29And behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Son of God? hast thou come here before the time to torment us? 8:30Now there was, a great way off from them, a herd of many swine feeding; 8:31and the demons besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine. 8:32And he said to them, Go. And they, going out, departed into the herd of swine; and lo, the whole herd [of swine] rushed down the steep slope into the sea, and died in the waters. 8:33But they that fed them fled, and went away into the city and related everything, and what had happened as to those possessed by demons. 8:34And behold, the whole city went out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged [him] to go away out of their coasts.
