Scholia (scholia.study) is an interactive reader for primary-source texts, operated by Dialogos AS (Norwegian org. no. 935 999 464), which is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, and what your rights are. All personal data we hold is stored and processed within the European Union, and we comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
What we collect
Account data. When you create an account we store your email address, display name, handle, and — if you sign up with a password — a hashed form of that password (never the password itself). If you sign in with Google or GitHub, we receive your email address and name from that provider; we never see the password you use there.
Content you create. Quotations, notes, articles, and feedback you submit are stored so we can show them to you (and, where you choose to publish, to other readers).
Billing data. Paid subscriptions are processed by Stripe. Stripe holds your payment details; we store only what we need to manage your subscription (such as your subscription status and a Stripe customer reference). We never see or store your card number.
Technical data. When you use the site we process technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages you request. We use this solely to keep the service running: authentication, security, traffic measurement, and error monitoring.
Why there is no cookie banner
We don't show a cookie banner because we don't need one: every cookie we set and every piece of data we collect is used for our own operation of the service only — keeping you signed in, measuring traffic, and diagnosing errors. We use no third-party advertising cookies, no cross-site tracking, and we never share or sell your data for marketing purposes.
Service providers
We use a small number of service providers to run Scholia. Each processes data on our behalf, under contract, and only for the purposes described here:
- Better Stack (error and performance monitoring, via the Sentry SDK) — receives error reports and performance traces so we can find and fix problems. Hosted in the EU.
- PostHog (product analytics) — will receive first-party usage analytics so we can understand how the site is used. EU hosting.
- Stripe (payments) — processes subscription payments.
We also send transactional emails (email verification, password reset) to the address on your account.
What we don't do
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not run third-party ad trackers or cross-site tracking of any kind.
- We do not share what you've read or annotated with anyone else, unless you publish it yourself.
Retention
We keep your account data and content for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, your personal data is deleted; error logs and traffic records are kept only for a limited period and then discarded.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, and erase your personal data, to receive a copy of it in a portable format, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

Questions about your data, or requests to exercise your rights, can be sent to contact@scholia.study.
